Do I have to reinstall Morrowind all over again?

Post » Wed Jul 27, 2011 8:40 am

Hey all, I did a factory reset to my computer. (sorry forgot the name what it's called) so basically it's like when my computer was in the begining. I have installed alot of mods for Morrowind which I finally started to love. So I before I did that. I saved my Morrowind files thinking I just can play it again without installing it all over again. So I clicked on the launcher and get an error message.

It will not start because some d3dx9_30.dll is missing it is saying. So does this mean I have to reinstall Morrowind and all the mods? I can't rememeber exactly the names of the mods I have installed. Or do I just reinstall Morrowind then Tribunal, then patch it up, then Bloodmoon and patch it up, then copy and paste my old files over the fresh install and can continue playing from where I left off?

I know it took me literally 24 hours to get to where I was before. I don't feel like going through another 24 hours again to get Morrowind working to where I had it before. So what is the easiest way of doing it?

You have to reinstall morrowind with the expansions. As far as the mods go if you copied the data files folder and everything inside of it you should just be able to past that inside the fresh morrrowind install and should work ok

Thanks for the quick replies. So it was a good idea then to save what I had.

Ok I am happier now, all I need to do is just reinstall 3 disks and not spend 24 hours loading mods again. Hoping all this works.

Why would reinstalling Morrowind fix a DirectX DLL file error? Sounds like the latest revision of DirectX 9.0c is not installed or has been corrupted.

d3dx9_30.dll is from the April 2006 Update. Morrowind doesn't require the file (its only a DirectX 8.1 game) it is used by a mod/utility, probably MGE. FYI: Oblivion only requires d3dx9_27.dll (August 2005 Update).
To install the latest revision of DIrectX 9.0c, download link: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

Yep Níeh?ggr, it's MGE alright.

From the FAQ in the MGE topic:

Q: When I try to run Morrowind I get a message saying "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_##.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." Directx is already installed, what's this about?
A: You need to install the latest redistributable version of Directx 9.0c. Each new build of MGE usually require newer dll libraries that aren't available in runtime versions included with game discs or pre-installed versions. Vista and Windows 7 have Directx 10 & 11 pre-installed respectively, but you can safely keep it and install Directx 9 along side (MGE only makes use of Directx 9 libraries at this time).
