The only confirmed companions are Codsworth, Dogmeat, Preston Garvey, and Piper (who has yet to be featured outside of Quakecon and Gamescom) - that's four out of twelve, but at least we know the other eight are human. I take "human" to mean "humanoid", by the way, so that could include Ghouls or Synths but maybe not Super Mutants.

According to Todd Howard they're also designed to fit certain archetypes, so take that as you may.

Gamescom and Quakecon, although we've only heard reports from the people there. By all accounts, there are twelve companions, and only two of them are nonhumanoid. So, Dogmeat and Codsworth.

I'd be fine with not getting anymore information till after launch. I remember when I started New Vegas I didn't know who the companions were, so there was an element of surprise to it. When I got to the 188 and saw Veronica standing there she looked like a quest giver, so I talked to her to get whatever quest she had, only to find out she was a companion!

He looks fairly short in comparison to the other Mutants, which makes me think they have access to FEV and are making more mutants. Game logic would make sense if 'Skirmishers' etc are the younger, smaller ranks with brutes etc being the older or more 'pure' before exposure.

Crazy theory warning: Maybe your son left the vault before you, growing to the age of 20 or so in the wasteland until captured and exposed to FEV. Considering Vault dwellers and other untainted humans handle FEV better than irradiated survivors, he would be a high priority target to the more intelligent mutants. Maybe the Super mutant in the combat trailer fighting with you is your son? Not too crazy considering they had a scrapped plot for Fallout 3 in which your father was turned into a super mutant instead of leading the project purity questline.
