I have two odd problems

Post » Mon Sep 16, 2013 7:36 pm

I've been trying to register to the steam forums so I could post there, bc I have the steam version of the game. But after several days, it still won't let me log in. So I may have forgotten some details as to what happened.

For the past several days, whenever I get a new quest, the map marker for it won't show, on my map, on my compass, nothing. The only thing that works is it'll still center the map on the quest location if I tell it to (this is the only way that I can find my quests now). If I ask the greybeards to show me a wordwall, it'll reveal the location on my map, but it wont show a quest marker to it. And what's really odd is that the two quests I had active when this started to happen still work fine. I can see the map marker, I can even unselect and re-select the quests and it'll still show the marker (though this won't fix the map markers for all my other quests).

The only fix I can find online is to delete 'maps.swf' or something like that, but I don't have that file anywhere on my computer (possibly bc I have the steam version).

My other problem, which is vastly more annoying, is my game keeps crashing randomly. And I don't mean it feezes up or crashes when I start it. I can be sitting there playing the game and suddenly the game disappears and I'm on the desktop again, no error message, no for-warning, nothing. One moment I'm playing the game, everything's going fine, then the next instant I'm sitting on the desktop and my game is gone. It started happening right after I told disk-cleanup to delete my windows.old file (bc I was beyond sick of my computer taking more than 6 hours to do its daily scan). I was playing the game, when the thing suddenly took me back to desktop bc the back-up program for my external harddrive was going haywire. I got back in, had the problem with my normal mouse appearing in the game, I managed to fix it, then it crashed on me. Then it proceeded to crash on me repeatedly every few minutes. I got into the habit of saving my game after every fight just incase my game crashed. It stopped doing that yesterday though, infact it didn't crash once yesterday, so I assumed the problem was gone. But just now, the damn thing crashed on my again, just like before. No warning, nothing going wrong with the game, no error message, nothing, my game just disappears. It hasn't done it in the middle of a fight yet (it seems to only do it when I'm walking around, though I did have to kill a dragon a second time bc of the crashes).

What's going on here? This is stupid and ridiculous and I have no idea how to fix, because I have no indiction at all as to what is wrong, and I've had this game for at least a year now and have never had a problem with it crashing, or with bugs of any sort.

What's going on and how can I fix this?

have you updatet to the latest unofficial patch ???

after that try again...

SteamApps/Common/Skyrim/Data/Interface (that's the folder for the maps.swf - you can rename it actually to maps.swf bak)

------------------------

As for your crashing have you any mod's installed ???

No, I don't have any mods, or the unofficial patch, or any of the expansions (though I am considering getting dawnguard in the future).

I have noticed something odd about the crashes, saving frequently seems to prevent them from happening. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but when I save frequently, I have no problems with crashes what-so-ever. Its only if I play a long time without saving that it seems to happen. Note that when it started, it crashed several times in a relatively short span of time. I literally couldn't go more than a minute or so without it crashing on me.

install the unofficial patch from here: http://afkmods.iguanadons.net/index.php?/files/file/659-unofficial-skyrim-patch/

and verify your game cache files via this: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

How do you install it? I've downloaded it, but none of the program files it has works. And I can't find any instructions on how to do it.

I got it installed, but it doesn't seem to have fixed anything.

The default location is C:\Program files\Steam\Steamapps\common\skyrim\data.

Put the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.bsa and the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp in that folder. (you don't need the .bsl file)

Check Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp in the Skyrim launcher (data files) if it isn't (it should already be after installation.)

------------------------------

have you verified your cache files ????

post your dxdiag !!!!!

1. Click Start and type Dxdiag in the search.
2. Click on dxdiag.exe.
3. Click on Save All Information and save it to your desktop or where ever you like.
4. Locate dxdiag.txt on your desktop or where ever you saved it and attach that to this forum.

A good reinstall would have fixed your problems, unless they are hardware related, rather than using a mod.

I'm pretty deep into the main questline, as in I'm about to fight alduin.

I don't think its worth a re-install. I've noticed that some of my quests are working fine (maybe some of them are just bugging on me or something, I don't know). And like I said before, I can figure out where to go just by telling my map to center on the quest, and then placing my own custom quest marker on the location. It doesn't have to be precise, once I get close enough the area will appear on my compass anyway.
