do we have to be what our race tells us to be?

Post » Tue Sep 06, 2011 6:48 am

No race is gonna be better at any skill then any other race if they both have it maxed out. The races do however, get a starting bonus to some skills. Like a Breton may start with 10 more in restoration compared to a Nord, but if the wants to max out restoration he can, different races just make it easier to be things. The only difference is that the Nord would have to work a tiny bit harder in order to gat a skill to 100 then the Breton would.

My usual characters are
Breton=Assassin/Mage
Breton=Assassin
Breton=Light Armor Knight
Breton=Necromancer
Breton=Soul Eater
Dunmer=Assassin/mage
Dunmer=Assassin
Dunmer=Heavy Armor/Light Armor NecroKnight
Dunmer=Necromancer
Dunmer=Death Knight

:D Also the bonuses really do not matter in the long run. You can get every race or class to it's max. (If you are that way)

What is a Death Knight?! Or a NecroNight fr that matter....

1. Every race has people of all professions, wouldn't be a very prosperous civilization otherwise...
2. Pretty much only the Valenwood Bosmer are cannibals, the others adapted to the culture of the province they live in.

Deathknight is a dark magic knight basically, and necroknight is a knight that use necromancy.

You can play as whatever you want, Its just some races add Bonus to things
E.g Bosmers are Good Archers, But that doesn't mean you have can't play as an Orc Mage :)

Yea you can be whatever you want with a Breton or whatever race you choose. Like Orcs might be better suited for being Warriors but you can break the mold and be a thief/assasin Orc. Or a Mage Argonian. Really its up to you. I made my Argonian in OB a Warrior with some thief/assassin in him. Gonna do the opposite in Skyrim.

Well right now I'm just having a think about what I want to play as. In oblivion I'm currently a dark elf, but in Skyrim I would like to play someone a bit more "friendly". I will most likely play as a stealthy archer. I was thinking Breton but on the wiki it says they are mages. And I dont really like the wood elves history of cannibalism.
I'm thinking I will probably be a stealthy archer Breton but I feel I HAVE to use magic since dont they get bonus's for that? Anyone get what I mean..

I have a stealthy archer Breton in Oblivion (and an Orc mage, and a Bosmer barbarian, and an Altmer heavy armor tank...) You've never had to be any particular thing with any particular race in a TES game.

Nonetheless, people remain convinced that races are somehow locked into particular playstyles, and in spite of the fact that that's actually a misperception, Beth has gone to some lengths to "fix" that "problem." So, in Skyrim, there will be even fewer differences between races and those differences will be even less significant, by design.

No.

Be who you want to be, play how you want to play.

That's the core of the Elder Scrolls experience.

There are no preset classes, they have confirmed that, there are no classes, there are only skills, therefore, you can do whatever you want...besides, bethesda would never make preset classes for races...that is honestly one of the stupidest ideas ever...anyways, the bethesda goal is to make the craziest most awesome games ever, where you can do whatever...for christ sake, you can have an Argonian who flails chicken [censored] if you wanted too (not really) but the point is that they would never preset anything because it counteracts their goals.

It's only that they have different talents, really. An Altmer warrior will be weaker in his main skills than a Nord/Orc/Redguard, but will have stronger magic to back it up. Otherwise the same, a Nord mage will have weaker magic than an Altmer, but will be stronger when he/she needs to use a sword. You can't make really bad decisions, it's all up to you and how you're going to play the game!

If you want to play an archer, you are at a slight advantage if you are a wood elf. It doesn't make a significant difference though, and I remember seeing imperial and breton archers all the time in Oblivion.

Way more challenging when you don't play as your race main class.

I didn't know the races told us what they should be. Sure you can make a connection between racial bonuses and abilities and certain RPG archetypes, but that doesn't mean you can't have a that is all powerful . I always picked my race just like I do my character's looks... based upon what I find most appealing.
I can't understand this drive people have to make sure their guy is the absolute most effective at whatever they do.
Sure, I understand the drive for perfection IRL, but I am 100% certain that not a single
person here is what they perceive as perfect, including myself.

Idk, I guess some people will always do that... I like to enjoy my games, not turn them into a job.. When I want to strive for perfection, I do it at work.

This is my stance exactly. I usually pick a play style and then choose a character that "looks good" to me. The first time through Oblivion I wanted to play a blunt/archer and chose a Dunmer. Unfortunately archery svcked (or I didn't give it enough time to improve). Next time I chose a blade/conjuration/destruction character and picked a Khajiit. For Skyrim I plan to play a dual-wield blunt and blade/conjuration and possibly archery (if it's greatly improved) and will either be a male Argonian or female Orc. I figure even if my character doesn't "fit the lore" then I must be that one exception to the rule. I'll be the only Orc mage Skyrim has ever seen.

Best warriors = Nords, Redguards and Orcs.
Best thieves = Khajiit and Bosmer.
Best mages = Bretons and Altmer.
Balanced races = Argonians, Dunmer and Imperials.

You can be a Nord wizard or a Breton thief, though, and excel at it. You just have to work a bit harder at it.

Be who you want dude. The racial bonuses are there as a just that, a bonus. You don't have to conform to those as a class. Develop whatever skills you want. It the way TES is meant to be played. ^^
