Have You Ever Lied on Your Resume?

Post » Fri Mar 25, 2016 12:03 pm

I'm reading through Reddit right now about this. To me it's absolutely hilarious, but it seems to work out for some people. I haven't done it, but I'm just wondering if anyone here has any stories of their own regarding this.

I've exaggerated the truth and also was a little vague so if questioned I would not be wrong.

Easiest way to get a job without as much experience as they would want, the catch is you need to learn on the fly very fast.

The trick is to look at the job posting (if there is one) and then adjust your resume to sort of mirror their expectations. If that includes doing what I did above, more power to you.

As for straight up lying, I would not want to get caught. Though against the law, hiring managers in the same industry will share information. And if questioned if they shared information, they can lie about it.

I've omitted certain things about my military service when writing out a resume for some civilian positions I've applied for, but that was out of necessity.

I've never written a resume.

In my younger days, you got a job with an interview, a handshake, and an application form. Nobody expected a complete work history, just maybe a couple of references.

In the mid-1980s, I started my own business, and I was self-employed until I retired.

Nope. I wrote my first resume when I got out of the Navy. That training landed me a civilian job. Since then, the list of skills just kept growing. I've changed the particular skills I stressed, depending on the job I was applying for, but I never lied.

Can they ask you what race you are?! I thought that was a no no.

Stretched the truth a lot straight out of Highschool since entry level part time job such as a Dishwasher needed 4+ years of experience.

Ive used some creative writing to make somethings ive done sound better, not as much as many resumes as ive seen, and ive had to have omitted a bit which has shortened my resume greatly.

Like other posters I've definitely used some creative writing, but I have never lied. Any major lies I made would have easily been discoverable through background checks anyway, which almost all employers seem to do.

I've never lied on my CV. I've never felt the need. I found that nepotism worked much better. Once that got me through the door after university, the experience I earned boosted my CV so that there is no lying necessary.

No, I haven't. I sometimes wonder if some employers expect their prospective staff to lie on their CV judging by the sort of people I see working there, but just having to work with them is a good reason to stay honest and not get the job!

Until recently I never had to deal with this. I got my first job by simply asking "You need anyone?" whereupon they replied "When can you start?" :P

Meh, I don′t care to lie on CVs n′ stuff. Honestly I don′t give a monkey′s behind if I get a particular job these days. Every company gets so many applicants so they can pick and choose anyway and I don′t stand out enough. I can do a good job but that′s no where near enough anymore.

Besides, I have my own stuff to deal with at our place in the woods. Firewood needs to be chopped and the excavator needs to dig holes :D

I've never flat out lied to boast myself. I have rearranged and altered work dates though because moving 5 times in a 2 year span does not look good.

A resume isn't anything but history, more importantly, bragging rights. I do not lie on my resume. I don't need to.

Now, ask if I lie in an interview, and my answer is "Hell yes", because I can promise you what they say isn't what they mean, so in essence, we're both lying to each other.

It's a ridiculously stupid cat & mouse game, but companies refuse to give it up.
