In the real world, right now gold is worth somewhere between 30-50 times more than silver, and has been that case historically. Yet we can find ourselves in situations where something like a silver plate is goes for about 20 gold coins. Even factoring in that there is craftsmanship involved in making stuff out of silver, it should still be vastly less valuable than its weight in gold...
In fact I find it disturbing that even salt can be worth more than gold at 15g for 0.2lb...
To fix this, I think back to stuff like World of Warcraft, where the monetary system is based in copper, silver, and gold, which gold being what it should be, a very significant thing... In this context, I think that Copper (Corundum) coins would be worth next to nothing, it would be more practical to deal in bars than coins. So something that I have been thinking about is having silver coins as the main coinage used...
I have put a good bit of thought into this thus far, I use Requiem, where weight is added to gold, so that is the context in which I put everything. My thinking is that each silver septim (Using the same skin as gold just with color tweaks) would be 0.01lb amounting to 100 silver per pound. While gold septims having the same weight would be worth 100 silver septims amounting to 10,000 per pound. Then if you get insanely rich, you could use bank notes, like in the http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/17985/?.
Of course, I wouldnt know the first thing about making a mod to do this, but I have just been tickled by the idea for a while and thought i would share...
