Have you realised quest markers are probably out?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 11:38 pm

All the articles we received yesterday (or at least some of them) mentioned a quest in which the quest giver guide the PC to the first place.

This could mean that quest markers can be definitely out.

At least, we have now for sure good indications, and with a mod we can easily delete the quest markers.

We've been told that the compass has been moved to the top of the screen. Why would they have a compass without quest markers?

Although I hope you're right.

Nah, they'll be in. And just because one quest has some NPC escorting you to the location doesn't mean most of them will.

No, it doesn′t, but it′s a good start I think. Maybe all quest will have good directions so that we can easily delete the questmarkers ourselves.

Let′s hope, brothers!

No it's not out. In fact there'll be probably a bigger need for it because of the Radiant Story randomizing the location of the quests.

How about to help you determine which direction is which? You know, what compasses are used for in real life...

Though this doesn't mean that compass markers aren't in the game, it's possible that NPCs give directions but there are still compass markers, though if NPCs do give directions, it would be easy to make the quest compass optional, and perhaps that option exists in the game. But even if one quest has directions doesn't mean ALL quests do. Oblivion had quests where you couldn't just rely on the quest compass, Lifting the Vale, for example. For most of the quest, you had to rely on translated text from an Akaviri soldiers' journal you were provided with to find where you had to go. Though admitably, if most quests have a compass marker, I'd assume Bethesda would choose one that does for their demonstration.

This sums it up nicely.

I reckon they may be optional if this sort of behavior is for every quest. So if people want to find the place without quest markers, they can turn them off and be guided through directions or following an NPC. If the people who want quest markers, turn quest markers on, then they just have a bit more info about the general direction from a NPC.

The fact that NPCs give precise directions or accompany you to the quest location has been known since January...

I hope quest markers are out, it was the thing that made Oblivion most 'gamey'.
I really like how in the article it is described that an NPC walks with you a little to point you on the right path.
Things like that coupled with decent directions would eliminate the need for a quest marker.

Just for the record,on the GI articles they had already stated that npc's would guide us/give directions to our quest objectives,so its not really nothing new here.

If by "Guide" they mean "Escort" then I have to say that this is really much worse than the compass ever was. Nothing is as annoying as having to follow a painfully slow NPC who takes a painfully stupid path.

However, if by "Guide" they mean "Give me detailed directions that allow me to find my way to the destination" then I will be very happy.

i was under the impression that you still had your compass to tell you which direction you were facing but the quest markers didnt show up until you brought the map up on screen. i certainly hope they are doing it this way cause im so [censored] sick of having my hand held by every game. just give me directions and if im really struggling to find something i can always look it up online if i have too.

Compass is top middle of the screen now.

This annoys me, as does the new text. I find it very intrusive. When everything is at the bottom it's just a footnote, and the view is essentially unobstructed, but having it straight in the top middle it's right in your face, and whenever you look out you'll see the compass right there, and when talking to people, the text will be right up in front of you, making it actually take you right out of the game world.

The NPC was guiding Todd but he ran ahead without his guide. So I am thinking they are still in.

Dovakiin: Hello Farmer Ted!
Farmer Ted: Hello Dov- what is that?
Dovakiin: What is what?
Farmer Ted: What is that thing on your head?
Dovakiin: Oh, this? The result of my genius! I found this magic compass that points where I want to go, however I got tired of having to take it out of the pouch and look at it whenever I needed to check my course so I nailed it to my skull. Now it always hangs down into my line of sight allowing me to always know what direction I'm headed!
Farmer Ted: Looks... painful. Wouldn't driving a nail into your head cause problems?
Dovakiin: Hello Farmer Ted!

NPCs better damn well get used to getting their ass replaced by their sister or son if they think they can roll with me on every quest I go on.

The quest markers are here to stay, get used to it and hope you don't enter a new town and see a bunch of golden exclamation points on all the NPCs heads.

What I hope they'll do with the quest marker is that it points you towards the area where the quest is at.
Not the exact location of the quest objective.

Pretty much this.

If somebody told you where certain thing is, even if it's a bit vague, but he tells you by name, there should be a a quest marker for that.

When the quest is about, "finding this" or "searching for that" quest markers could ruin things, otherwise they're helpful.

Remember though, he said there should be a marker for the 'area', not on the object itself, and 'area' is very debatable and vague.

And also, why 'should' there be a quest marker for that? Very few things should, or shouldn't be a certain way. Who are you to decide?

When the quest is about, "finding this" or "searching for that" quest markers could ruin things,

Only could ruin things? Really? Do you still not get it? The task of finding something for the sake of fun/a challenge, is by complete necessity ruined by an arrow that points to it.
Imagine how fast a game of hide 'n' seek would lose it's appeal if everyone hid and then told you where they were. Don't you think "could" ruin it, is a bit of an understatement pal?

otherwise they're helpful.

This has been specifically addressed, nobody is saying quest markers aren't 'helpful', they're about as helpful as the game doing the quests for you itself would be helpful. The point is many people believe, including me, that they're too helpful.

An entrance to a cave is vague enough?

And it should be marked because you already know where it is, your character/the npc marked it on the map, because I said so and my word is law.

No because this is a tacit admission that you still do not get the point at least, and at most an admission that you would even be quite happy if every time the specific point of a quest was to FIND something, you still had your magical eye arrow.
