Have you upgraded to Windows 10 for better graphics?

Post » Wed Oct 28, 2015 1:57 pm

So I have always been on the fence about upgrading from windows 7 to windows 10 for several reasons.

#1 It was very limiting in some aspects and controlling in others, such as trying to sell you on cloud service Onedrive, Microsoft office etc...

#2 They stated you will not be able to play pirated games. (This wasn't alarming because I pirate games, I use steam) but I don't like microsoft knowing what I have downloaded and being able to limit what I can and cant run on my machine.

#3 Not familiar/scared of the new UI

But a friend of mine had convinced me to upgrade to 10 saying it better for gaming. Since I trust him, I did.

And holy shiz the first game I played I noticed a BIG difference in graphic quality (Diablo 3) So I did some digging. As it turns out Windows 10 is able to utilize or better utilize DirectX 10/11/&12 features. Wheres as Windows 7 is less inclined to do so. Especially Since i am running a GTX 980 which was basically the hardware that was made to support DirectX 12.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, in closing, for anyone (Especially those with higher end graphics cards) I would HIGHLY suggest upgrading to Windows 10 if you haven't already if you want the BEST graphics experience when Fallout 4 drops.

Let me know what you guys think.

I can't really comment on game performance, I didn't see much difference before-after. But the upgrade was free so what the hell. It runs OK and I've gotten used to the UI (a lot of customizing from my part though). Got some annoying bugs (like desktop flickering/tearing) and a few irritating features but I'm hoping the bugs will be sorted sometime. I'll need to reinstall win7 on secondary hdd though as some older games don't seem to work at all now. DOS/95 games work well but WinXP era games have issues...

And I actually did a full clean install instead of update.

I'm still on a GTX770 and i won't upgrade to WIN10 yet.

If it is for optimization, you can use other tools.

I don't really think windows is "making graphics better", remember they try to sell the same story with direct X10 and 11

Sure i could believe its all BS when its coming from Microsoft but....

http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2015/07/29/directx-12-windows-10/

When it comes directly from Nvidia I have a hard time NOT believing it.

[edit: idd also like to note that DX12 does nothing for you unless you have a GTX 900 series or better video card]

Maybe there is some slight optimization, but no big difference.

Microsoft and Nvidia, is just big publicity.

I believe the more "technical " reviews of independent reviewers and non of them actualy say that direct X12 is "relevant" yet.

It could be in the coming years, but personaly i would rather upgrad my Graphic card, then going for the new OS.

Even if theres a chance...

Upgrading from win 7 to win 10 = $0

Upgrading graphics card = $200-$1800

Nope, I think I'm good with 7 64 bit. I think I'll upgrade when my favorite games don't work on 7 anymore. I have heard nasty things about the spyware in 10.

DX 12 does nothing for you unless the game is coded to use it.
Fallout 4 is not coded to use it.
Expect games that benefit from it to come out next year.

Just like every other windows version.. I now have games that run better, games that run worse and games that the community again has to get running properly.

I know the upgrade its free, but doesn't mean its good.

Windows 8 is a nightmare for companies (i give tech support for a finacial soft) and each time i have to use it, to find something out, helping somebody else is a pain in the *** because they can't find anything back...

Windows 10 was a step in the right direction, but still...

The fact of being monitored the whole time (yes you can deactivate it, after a lot of work), Microsoft is doing to much in the shadows while it is on your pc.

I just think that win10 is not for gamers, our gaming community doesn't use it

I may not upgrade to W10 at all due to its intrusive behavior.

PC gaming used to be about control and choice and with W10 intrusiveness and forced updates and Nvidia forcing GeForce Experience PC gaming is now becoming about getting your arm twisted to have basic functionality and letting every company track everything you do.

I upgraded to Windows 10 and haven't really noticed any graphical or performance improvements in games to be honest. But IMO the UI is better and all the settings are better organised and streamlined, so I don't really see why anyone would stick to Windows 7 or 8. Only thing I don't like is automatic updates. Haven't really encountered any bugs either.

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10, which was a no brainer for me since I HATED Windows 8. I love Windows 10 myself and did notice a improvement on gaming right away, along with the speed of just about everything else.

Now unfortunately I'm in a position where I had to buy a new PC (it's in the mail) and it comes with W8, but it's supposed to allow for a W10 upgrade which I'll do as soon as possible.

nah I'm gonna stick with W7 for awhile longer at least for another year. dx12 isn't worth swapping for at least not yet. btw Windows 10 only blocks pirated apps not games.

I'm not upgrading yet.

For one, I'm concerned about some of my older games not running.

For two, I'm waiting at least until I upgrade my computer with a new MB/CPU (my Win 7 license is retail & portable. Taking the "free" Win10 upgrade will apparently make it OEM/locked)

(For three, I've never owned a system with a "top end" graphics card. Nor have I had an Nvidia card before. So the "woohoo! DX12 & improvements on your 970/980!" doesn't mean a lot to me.)

I hate the Win8 and higher UI with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. I'll consider upgrading from Win 7 when Hell freezes over. If I wanted an iPad I'd buy a damn iPad. Windows is supposed to be a simple workhorse and not optimized for playing bejeweled and other worthless [censored] like that.

This. You aren't going to see more than 3-5 fps improvement in current games - if that.

A game has to be programmed to use Direct X 12, and none are so far. Newer games programmed in Direct X 12 will definitely look and perform better in Windows 10. But no currently released game, and no game released this year, is going to LOOK any different. Again, all the benchmark tests between Windows 8.1 and 10 show marginal difference in FPS. Some games get 3-5 fps more in Windows 10, and some games LOSE 3-5 fps in Windows 10.

Upgrading isn't a slam dunk right now if you are a gamer, and you may run into compatibility issues with current games. A lot of us, myself included, are going to wait for at least the first Service Pack before upgrading. But you all feel free to keep beta testing for Microsoft. Someone has to! :D

I won't take Windows 10 until I have to as the only version I might consider is the Windows 10 pro version, which is not free for me anyway.

No, I won't be upgrading. I am content with Win8.1, though at first I hated it.

I upgraded to 10 on both my home PCs when it became available. It's nicer than 8.1 without having to install a third-party start menu. I haven't had any issues with old games working, and it's a lot quicker to boot up on my older PC than Windows 7 was.

I saw no better performance in Win10 for current games and I don't think that we'll see better performance in DX12 games in the future as well simply because developers will say "hey, this works fast so let's cram in some pointless pebbles on the road to diminish performance" as they did back in DX10. It's the same story every time, I couldn't get hyped this time after I hyped DX10 and it was mostly adopted after DX11 came out and many games didn't even use tessellation where it mattered like faces etc and focused it on rocks.

I play only Skyrim on my first PC with Windows 10. System memory usage was 20% lower on W10 vs W7.

So i thing that's an improvement.

Also as stated above W10 boots and shuts down faster than W7. (i have an SSD so i measured the difference)

As gameplay concerns i would say, it's equal to W8.1 and better than W7.
