Having My Cake and Eating it Too

Post » Wed Sep 29, 2010 1:24 pm

I have reached an impass, as it would seem, and I am looking for advice to traverse said problem. I am working towards Mr. House's dominance over New Vegas and he requests that I destroy the Brotherhood of Steel. I have no qualms about killing the group but I do, however, have reservations about losing my favorite campanion: Veronica. I have tried multiple ways to kill them but the result is always the same. I have not completed the BoS quests if that makes any diference. I would appreciate any advice, thank you.

The result is always the same: what is the result?

Well I can't complete Legion with Boone or Arcade as companions.
Action and consequence.
You want to side with House then maybe Veronica "has" to leave you.
But I dunno, try leaving her at trading post 188, put on Powder Ganger faction armor, go down to self destruct button, press it, high tail it outta there, take off faction armor, go talk to Veronica.

This game doesn't like letting you have you cake and eating it too, in most cases I'm afraid.

If you side with the NCR, there's a path option that allows you to not destroy the bunker and thus keep her...but with House...I don't believe there is. If you fire her and destroy the bunker, I think she will no longer join up with you if you go back to talk to her. Or if she does join, she'll almost immediately leave again.

It was a pretty good idea but it worked to no avail. It seems like your "action and consequence" line will just have to cosole me. Thanks anyways.

And this is why I regret letting her get that perk from dead money.
I wonder I am idolized by the BoS, how far will my reputation sink ?

Actions ==> Consequences

Cause ==> Effect

Action ==> Reaction

You can have your cake and eat it, too. But, you only get one cake :cake:

What you cannot do is eat your cake and have it, too. (Why can't anybody get that right?)

The terms mutually exclusive and arbitrary conditions apply here. While you can arbitrate the NCR vs BoS relationship to a détente, you cannot do so with Mr. House (and House apologists insist there is humanity in him—BAH!) Even though Col. Moore insists the NCR will take them out later, the end story belies this.

And since Veronica's affinity with the Brotherhood mirrors Boones antithesis to the Legion, visiting destruction upon her faction is akin to attacking her. (I'm surprised she didn't smite thee where thou stood. :nope:

this isnt my name

I don't know if my game glitched or not, but I was able to keep her after I massacred the BoS. In my game I did all of her quests and convinced her to stay with the BOS, and then did all of their quest so I could wear power armor. I then set the bunker to self destruct and made sure to manually kill everyone on my way out of the bunker. She never left my side throughout the rest of the game.

Edit: I should note that I told her to wait at the Lucky 38 while I killed everyone.

All I have to say is that I think that most people's reaction to someone who killed their entire family, friends, and town you grew up in etc. would not, and should not, exactly be friendly.

@sloth4z - it's entirely possible (but I do not know for sure) that if destroying the bunker has a set point value of rep. loss, that it may not be enough to put you under Veronica's rep threshold if you destroy it when Idolized by the BoS. But if it's set to instantly be Vilified no matter what, then she should leave and it'd be a glitch.

She didnt like them any way, do her companion quest, goto the followers, and she clearly dosent support the BoS.

I looked in the GECK and there's a script that supposedly sets BoS rep to Vilified upon destruction to 'help Veronica react appropriately.'

So I'd say sloth4z got lucky in some glitchy way.

Have you tried the old silent but deadly trick?

Do some quests for the BoS, get your rep up to at least liked.

Then leave Veronica and co behind, and slowly terminate those terminators.
Using a silenced 12.7 pistol, a stealth boy, sneak and headshots.

Is this specified as Meltdown destruction, or any form of killing them Lady Crimson.

Really?, I did not have to last time.
Is there a bug or glitch for the pc on this.
Last three goes I just head shot them without sneaking even.

Once the player has access to the bunker, they may complete the mission by activating the self-destruct sequence, or by killing all Brotherhood personnel. Note that upon activating the self-destruct, the entire base will lockdown. The doors can only be opened with a Lockpick skill of 100 or by taking a key from the guards protecting the Elder. The Brotherhood will also become hostile to you.

It's called HVBunkerExplosionScript and looks like this: (I hightlighted Veronica's reference with a red circle)
http://crimsonkeep.com/wallpapers/data/media/33/BoS-explosionscript.jpg

It references never being able to enter the bunker again and Col. Moore, so I'd say it's the Destroy the Bunker script. However, as usual I'm not a GECK script expert...and it's also from the most patched 1.2 version.

In terms of the non-explosion way to deal with the Bunker for House...that doesn't sound like a glitch, just an option that kind of amounts to the same thing. My guess would be that the game would still consider killing everyone as 'destruction' in terms of the quest and likely set rep to vilified, or killing everyone inside would be enough to lower rep to that, but who knows....if one wants to keep Veronica, it's worth a shot.

There really should be certain actions that overide all previously gained positive reputation.
Destroying the BoS bunker should set them to vilified no matter what your previous reputation. Killing Eddie the leader of the powder gangers should set them to vilified no matter your previous reputation. Killing Caesar should likewise earn you vilified regardless of previous Legion reputation.

I'm really just mucking around with the latest build, at NV now and just killing everyone to see what effect it has on others dialogue.
So I'll head to yes man, console my rep with the BoS, go to Hidden vally first as just triggered V's quest, than try the sneak attack metheod.
Both with her in party and without, kinda interested about how this turns out.

My feelings would be that IF your rep with the BoS becomes Vilified and Veronica does not initiate the "I'm leaving, bye" action, that would be the glitch. She should leave if your rep is that low...if she does not...scripting oversight/glitch.

If you kill the BoS without incuring any repuation loss.
I.E by killing them all with a silenced sneak attack, Veronica does not leave the party, no mention of it as an event at all.

It is however harder than it seems, even if undetected on the first kill, all BoS members turn hostile automatically.
Patience, stealthboys and a high sneak are needed.

If you get vilified she'll leave it's true, so it's possible to have your Veronica cake, and eat it...

Who'd of thunk it?

Wearing a brother hood scribe robe also helps, it counts as a disguse.
You'll need to kill every named NPC, and seemingly all others too.
