Having Children Not Possible?

Post » Fri Dec 24, 2010 11:43 pm

I was just thinking...
If the dragonborn trait is passed down through the generations (as in the Septim line), would that exclude the player from being able to have children because his kids would be dragonborn too?

I know that relationships and have children has not been confirmed or anything yet, but I was hoping that this might be implemented into the game.

No.

And I'll bet a leg and arm that 99% of the comments will agree.

It's just not needed. At all.

Many things in the game aren't needed. At all. Yet Bethesda includes them to add more to the game.

Yeah, new combat additions?
Overhauled magic system?
Dragons?

All useless if there's no ROMANCE.

Fable's "relationships" aren't what I was referring to. I know Bethesda could create something much more believable and without the vulgar humor element.

An additional issue is that an "average" play of the game (not one of the people who plays one character for 200+ hours), in game-time, probably won't take more than a handful of months (2-3, I'd bet).

A few months isn't long enough to have kids. Even if there was a relationship system - which I doubt there will be, since Bethesda (not being Bioware or the Fable team) doesn't tend to have anything like that in their games.

edit: basically, "having kids" is pretty pointless in a game that doesn't have years and years of timeskip.

Its not a bad idea but I don't see it been included in Skyrim, maybe the next TES game after Skyrim..... but I doubt it!

I don't think being a Dragonborn would prevent you from having children, but I do think Bethesda probably won't include that in the game, because that doesn't seem like the sort of thing I could see Bethesda doing with the series, nor does it seem like a large portion of the fanbase would want it, neither do I, and if the option were in the game, I would not use it. Raising children is not something I'd expect to be all that fun in a game like this, and raising children is a major responsibility, and would require the player to devote a lot of time to it, distracting from things like exploring and doing quests, which I AM interested in doing, thus, I'd have no desire to have children in the game. And yes, some things aren't strictly needed, but can still add to the game, but I don't feel being able to have your own children falls into that category, because I don't think an Elder Scrolls game would benefit from it at all.

That makes sense.
I thought time went faster in the game  My mistake.

Leveling goes faster, not time. This isn't the Sims.

The last few elder scrolls games lasted 3-4 years at most. It's extremely likely this will continue. Daggerfall and Arena were 7 and 10 years-ish, respectively, due to Daggerfall being very large and the most realistic in geographic terms, and arena for having to travel all over Tamriel.

Also, you were chosen by the gods to stop Galactus, not being a parent.

To each his own :foodndrink:
The option of including relationships is really more personal opinion.
I was mainly trying to focus on if being dragonborn would prevent having children.

I don't think that Bethesda have really detailed the definition of 'dragonborn' sufficiently to answer this question, but I don't think there's anything in the lore that would preclude the player-character from having children in the game. Being dragonborn isn't a case of 'only one at a time'. Being the specific dragonborn prophesied to save the world at a particular time and place is (of course) a one-off.

As other posters have pointed out, whether such a feature gets in game is a question of gameplay practicality. And also of Bethesda's preferred mood/style/feature-set.

Plus there's the wailing and gnashing of teeth from a significant and vocal chunk of Bethesda's fanbase to consider. I mean that much rage and resentment being unleashed, should Bethesda announce a feature like this, could usher in the apocalypse :D.

Anything can be added to a game if done right, if bethesda put this in the game I'm sure they would do fine with it.

Oh I don't know, having a kid could be quite fun, you could take him/her on missions and teach them how to kill dragons ect... That would be quite interesting :P

That's just not Bethesdas cup of tea. They've followed the same formula since Daggerfall and I can't see them changing it.

No, Its a RPG not a simulator game, And it wouldn't be possible, because your supposed to be the last dragon born, but the child would be half dragonborn, Also, I wouldn't want my female character too be exploring caves 8 months pregnant wearing a maternity dress.. <_<

I'm generally against the player being able to have children, but think of this:

You and your game wife are both nords, and when the baby comes out, it has little orc tusks.

Who have you been sleeping with you [censored]?

If we do hve six, than we could get a child...but never would see him, because it would take about 9 in-game months!
