i was thinking about this before they announced skyrim and i thought that it would be really interesting to even write in different languages but now i'm beginning to think its pointless

You think the devs have noticed this thread?

It's one of those ideas I really hope stands out to them. I wont be crushed if it isn't in the game but there's no reason not to have it.

Combine this with the option to turn off all quest markers. Gameplay gold.

This would be kinda nice, but personally I'd use parchment to make your own scrolls, then just have a personal notes section in the journal. What I'd really like is the ability to add as many markers and notes as you want to the map.

This. Personal notes section in the journal, multiple markers and notes on the map are all MUST HAVE.

I could be being really dense, but why dont you just jot stuff down on a bit of paper?

We're talking about the immersion factor here.

Yeah, I really hope they give you the ability to place lots of markers on your map. It's more realistic and really helpful if you feel like returning to a location. Sometimes I don't really feel like clearing this dungeon right now but still want to do so at some point. A journal would be nice, but i don't expect it.

I'd love the ability to write. One of my favorite morrowind mods was Writing Enhanced (or something like that) which let you write in books and on scrolls, etc. With my mage, I "published" his own alchemical discoveries, wrote journals, stories, travelogues etc. and filled a library in his stronghold with self-written stuff. It was awesome.

IMO an RPG is all about options and freedom. The more options there are, the better, even if they don't have anything to do with ramming a sword down a dragon's throat. RPGs are about more than combat and killing things.
