Having problems with landscape editor

Post » Fri Sep 17, 2010 6:30 pm

Hi,

I've been playing Oblivion for a while but just recently deciding to try my hand at creating a mod, so I've been going through the life-saving http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/A_beginner%27s_guide,_lesson_3_-_The_external_world I'm at the last part where you create a stone path to a cottage, but am having a strange problem when I try to paint the path. Some of the new texture shows up on the grass, but in other areas, even though I'm holding down the mouse button, no new new textures appear. That is, until I completely close out of the CS and reopen my file. Grassy areas I'd been scribbling over like a maniac with the landscape tool before finally show as stone.

This is pretty frustrating. I can't edit my landscapes as I create them. I'm having to guess where it might be drawn. Can anybody help me out with this please? I'm using 64-bit Windows 7, and running CS as admin.

Edit: I may have spoken too soon - the open-and-close-CS process worked a few times, but isn't doing the trick right now. I'm trying to draw stone road on grass and nothing is happening.

I have that same problem I think it has something to do with the region editor because it only happens in certain cells with certain landscape types, I have used the CS for 2 years and have not found a fix for this

It's comforting to know I'm the only one, but I really hope there's a solution out there! After more experimentation, it seems like there are large rectangular areas where I'm simply not allowed to draw on the landscape, because if I select a large brush there are clear boundaries where the textures stop painting. Pretty frustrating if large areas of the world are barred to us.

There is a limit of 9 textures for each ? of a cell (a quad).
When the quad reaches that limit, the 10th texture cannot be added and the feeling is that the CS is broken.

While in Landscape Editing, hit "I" and you will see all the textures already used in each quad and the respective percentages.
Delete (right mouse) the least used so you may add a new one.

Thanks, Quix. Does this apply even if you're borrowing an already-present texture with ctrl-click? Maybe the textures I'm borrowing are further away than I think...

What I wrote above is pretty much all I know about the subject.
The only other thing I've read in the forums in the past is that you should not delete the first one (but this was mentioned long time ago and I don't remember the reason or consequences).

Hope somebody else brings some more info for you.

This was super helpful, thanks man. Sorry if there' an obvious answer to this question, but is there a way to tell which quad you're hovering over?

I kinda thought it was about the amount of textures, did they fix this in fallout, I think they did because I didn't see the landscape suddenly change
oh you want to know another glitch with the system go to the last type of landscape on the list and hit down cs will crash

Type "B" to show cell boundaries. Then it is easy to figure out the quad.

Double-click on the cell name in the Cell View window and the CS will reload the cell looking down from above with the north-most part of the cell at the top. If you open the texture information window (the 'I' menu), the cell quads will match the cell; ie. the top left quad is the top left corner of the cell. Turning on cell borders (press 'B') as QQuix said will make this easier.

Deleting the first texture in the list was reputed to corrupt the cell and cause it to render black in-game, iirc. I've never tried it though, so it could be spurious.
