Your computer is not detecting your video card/chipset. You would need to go to the manufacturers website and download the latest GPU drivers.

Thankyou for that piece of advice, but for someone that is completely incompetent with computers, that person being me of course, what is a GPU? thankyou. Oh and I use NVIDIA if that helps at all!

In order for your PC to actually use the Geforce 8800, it requires the Video Driver that goes with it, which you haven't installed. The term GPU is favored by nVIDIA to describe their discrete add-on circuit boards for Graphics Processing, thus, Graphics Processor Unit.

The act of merely acquiring a copy of the current Graphics Driver set is only one step in putting it to use; the driver comes with its own install routines. It is a program that you must physically RUN to get any use from it.

Yea, so downloaded the driver and still NO success the symptoms are below

EDIT: Nope Just tried to run it and got the same message I always do, that it failed to initialize the renderer or something like this and a black box appears in the top left of my screen. This message only appears after I click play on the initial menu.

Post your DXDIAG again so that we can verify that you correctly installed the video drivers and your system is recognized the GPU.

You can use ["spoiler"] ["/spoiler"] tags, without the quotes, to enclose your DXDIAG so it is collapsible.

I am not convinced that the driver update procedure was properly followed (or else the display is plugged in on the wrong output jack in the back, as it appears that the MB just may include an IGP chip also).

After you download the driver, you have to install it. It should be in the form of an executable file (.exe).

If that seems too obscure, go into control panel, find the device manager and instruct it to to download and install the latest drivers for your Video Display Adaptor.

Under device manager, I went to my display driver and opened it to find "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" Any ideas now?

It's entirely possible that you have a borked display adaptor. I'd suggest going to gateway.com and using their diagnostics (they're not bad).

How sure are you that you actually have an 8800GT card?

Have you messed around with the actual components of the computer itself?

According to your DXDIAG, you have NO video drivers installed. The 8800 should have a DVI output, is that what you're using to connect your monitor? What is your monitor, and how is it connected to the computer?

The reality of it is; if your computer came with an 8800 preinstalled, the drivers should have been there. If they're not (and they aren't) your problem is with the original configuration of the machine, or else your Video Display adaptor has decided to die.

I repeat, log onto gateway.com and use their diagnostics.

Hey, back again, I can now say that I have almost completely exhausted all of the webs threads and topics on the "code 43" and 99% of the people that have had it have coincidentally have the Geforce 8800 card just as I do! Nobody and I mean nobody that I have come across yet has found a solution and this issue has driven me to excessive anger and frustration. If this issue is not resolved I will probably promise myself to never buy from Nvidia again! Thankyou if any of you find a solution that is proven to work. (Sorry just venting 10 hours of attempting to resolve this!!!)

Sorry to hear about your problem buddy. I'm experiencing a similar problem, I've got the load up screen up and running, but when I click play I get a little black box in the top left, and then a message telling me 'Oblivion has stopped running'. Sorry I can't help. No idea how to fix my issue either, because unfortunately I've never had any IT lessons, and I'm pretty much useless on computers in general :/ First played this game on Xbox and wanted to try it out on PC but it's not working. Hope you can fix whatever's stopping you from playing cause it's an awesome game!

Exactly, I have the black box and an error message just like you did, so I hope yours and my problem gets fixed ASAP. I totally agree, this game is amazing and I want to get back to playing it as soon as possible!

That last sentence doesn't make sense to me. Fallout could never have been played without the appropriate video drivers being properly installed. There's just no "game" problem to deal with here, not in my opinion, only a lack of expertise on the part of the seller and the buyer. The poor PC should be returned to the seller as being incomplete, or if there is no warranty, delivered to a competent technician for completion of its Windows installation.

You can try going into Device Manager, and right-clicking the 8800 video card (im assuming it will be lit up with a yellow ecclamation mark, or possibly a red x)
Chose the option to "Uninstall" and restart your PC.

When the computer comes up, you shoud see a message in the lower right that Windows is installing new devices.
If this fails, I would also say the video card is likely hosed.

Thankyou very much for your suggestion, it was a very good idea but I think you are also correct that my video card is most likely done. I'll most likely go and buy a new one soon, I've had it for 2 1/2 years so far so...time to go to the store.
