Having trouble modding the steam version

Post » Thu Dec 09, 2010 4:46 am

Right, so right now I'm trying to install several mods to my steam version of oblivion, the problem is that right now it's not working. The easiest mod I've been testing with is Robert's body V4 and V5. Currently neither of the mods are working on the steam version, but they both work just fine on my older disc version.

Anyone know what might be amiss?

You missed a step in the installation somewhere. Apart from the directory change and client dependency (which does not interfere with the game's operation), there is absolutely nothing different between the two versions.

Maybe you should check your Archive Invalidation?

In the mod or on the steam version? I've installed the mod the same way both times. The only difference being the steam version's mod doesn't work.

After having read through an article on the UESP, this is probably what's happening, I'm going to install AI Invalidated and see how it works.

Well that didn't work.

Do not know a thing about the Steam version other than no OBSE mods will work with it. Which is not your problem with the mod mentioned. Check the folder layout, perhaps Steam does it different?

Hmm...
I do not use Steam either but think this info is not correct. Isn't it the D2D version of the game that is incompatible with OBSE rather than the Steam version?

This is completely and totally untrue. Please read the OBSE readme again, OBSE does work with Steam.

(Abridged version: make sure obse_steam_loader.DLL is in your base Oblivion folder and enable Steam community in-game)

Check the folder layout, perhaps Steam does it different?

No, it doesn't. The folder structure between Steam and disc is exactly alike, as is the modding capabilities. Anything that may be going wrong, it is not Steam's fault and never will be.

Have you moved steam to outside of the 'Program files" folder. That seems to work for some people and may be worth a try.

Are you using Oblivion Mod Manager to load the Roberts Body archive files? Did you open Utilities->Archive invalidation->Select textures and meshes -> Select BSA Alteration->Select "Generate archive invalidation entries on hash collision"?

I recently started using quite a lot of mods on my Steam installation. Previously I only used a couple of mods, and it took a little while to get all the new mods running properly.

The only major difference I noticed due to Steam (and one that took a bit of research to figure out) is that Wyre Bash uses a file called bash_default.ini which includes a number of directory and executable file paths. Some of these paths must be changed for Steam users and then the modified file must be saved as "bash.ini" Here is the text of the version of the file I have:

[General]
;--sOblivionMods is the Alternate root directory for installers, etc.

; It is strongly recommended that you do NOT put it anywhere under the
; Oblivion install directory itself, because Oblivion.exe will search through
; every directory under the install directory.
; This "directory thrashing" can then cause performance problems during gameplay.
; sOblivionMods is defined specifically to circumvent this bug by storing files elsewhere.
sOblivionMods=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion Mods\

;--OblivionPath is the Oblivion directory (containing Oblivion.exe).
; Use this argument if Bash is located outside of the Oblivion directory.
; If using a relative path, will be relative to the Mopy directory
; Example=C:\Games\Oblivion
sOblivionPath=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion\

;--User directory arguments.
; These arguments allow you to specify your user directories in several ways.
; These are only useful if the regular procedure for getting the user directory fails.
; And even in that case, the user is probably better off installing win32com.

;--UserPath is the user profile path.
; May help if HOMEDRIVE and/or HOMEPATH are missing from the user's environment.
; Example=C:\Documents and Settings\Wrye
sUserPath=.

;--PersonalPath is the user's personal directory.
; Must be used in conjunction with the -l argument.
; Example=C:\Documents and Settings\Wrye\My Documents

;--LocalAppDataPath is the user's local application data directory.
; Must be used in conjunction with the -p argument.

One other small difference is if you want to use the 4GB exe loader, you use a different file for Steam install, which is included in the same archive as the regular 4GB loader.

I still have not been able to use Wyre Bash to install All Natural, which requires the loading of the archive from within the "Bash Installers" directory. (For some reason, Wyre Bash does not acknowledge any files placed within this directory.) However, I have been able to successfully install the following mods and the game runs excellent at 1920x1080 resolution, all detail settings maxed, with Qarl's 4k texture packs, OBGEv2 and ENBSeries shaders and lighting, HGEC body replacer, TNR improved NPC faces, Ren's Beauty Pack and Elaborate Eyes :

Spoiler
; ____ _ _ _ ___ ___ _____
; | _ \ | | (_) (_) |__ \ / _ \ | ____|

;--This is the generic version of Bash.ini. If you want to set values here,
; then copy this to "bash.ini" and edit as desired.

[General]
;--sOblivionMods is the Alternate root directory for installers, etc.

; It is strongly recommended that you do NOT put it anywhere under the
; Oblivion install directory itself, because Oblivion.exe will search through
; every directory under the install directory.
; This "directory thrashing" can then cause performance problems during gameplay.
; sOblivionMods is defined specifically to circumvent this bug by storing files elsewhere.
sOblivionMods=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion Mods\

;--OblivionPath is the Oblivion directory (containing Oblivion.exe).
; Use this argument if Bash is located outside of the Oblivion directory.
; If using a relative path, will be relative to the Mopy directory
; Example=C:\Games\Oblivion
sOblivionPath=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion\

;--User directory arguments.
; These arguments allow you to specify your user directories in several ways.
; These are only useful if the regular procedure for getting the user directory fails.
; And even in that case, the user is probably better off installing win32com.

;--UserPath is the user profile path.
; May help if HOMEDRIVE and/or HOMEPATH are missing from the user's environment.
; Example=C:\Documents and Settings\Wrye
sUserPath=.

;--PersonalPath is the user's personal directory.
; Must be used in conjunction with the -l argument.
; Example=C:\Documents and Settings\Wrye\My Documents
sPersonalPath=.

;--LocalAppDataPath is the user's local application data directory.
; Must be used in conjunction with the -p argument.
; Example=C:\Documents and Settings\Wrye\Local Settings\Application Data
sLocalAppDataPath=.

Nope, I'm just trying to install the mod the old fashioned way. There are only two main differences between my disc version and the Steam version, the first being the disc of course, the other being Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles in addition to the base oblivion install. It might also help to know that the mod worked on the disc version with no updates, as I didn't install the Shivering Isles patch to test it. I did have the latest patch BEFORE I got the Steam version, and the mod worked fine then.

I'm using the steam version with obse and a ton of plugins and having no problems, could you list the exact process you are going through to install your mods?

I've copied the mods from the RAR archive and then copied those files over into steam/steamapps/common/oblivion/data, exactly as I installed them to my disc version when they worked.

Hmm...
I do not use Steam either but think this info is not correct. Isn't it the D2D version of the game that is incompatible with OBSE rather than the Steam version?

Are you using Oblivion Mod Manager to load the Roberts Body archive files? Did you open Utilities->Archive invalidation->Select textures and meshes -> Select BSA Alteration->Select "Generate archive invalidation entries on hash collision"?

BSA Redirection is all you need so long as you set it up properly. Make sure ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.BSA is the very first one registered in sArchiveList (the standalone installer incorrectly puts it after Oblivion - Meshes.BSA).

But, doubling up on Archive Invalidation just in case won't hurt anything. :wink_smile:

Anyways, back to the problem. What's your OS and where did you install Steam?

Windows 7 and it's currently install on my C disc, C:/program files/steam.

I'll try setting that archive invalidation file right, see if that works.

That didn't work either...

As previously mentioned the STEAM version is no different, concerning mods, than the disc version. The mods work the exact same for both. I have both and have used both extensively.

However your problem is most likely due to UAC interference due to your installation location. You should reinstall STEAM, and therefor Oblivion, to a location outside the jurisdiction of UAC. :\Games\STEAM\ will work just fine.

Ditto Smooth. It's the fact that Steam is installed to Program Files. Reinstall Steam somewhere else. Then you'll be fine.

My disc version of Oblivion was also installed in program files. :shrug:

Anything else I could try before I uninstall steam? I'd rather not have to redownload ALL of my games.

Move the individual games folders to a temporary directory before reinstalling Steam, and put them back once you're done.

You don't need to redownload all your games. Just make a backup of your steamapps folder somewhere and then install Steam outside of Program Files, then copy your steamapps folder back. You will need to revalidate the games, but you will not need to download them again.

Before doing any of what was said above, please check the last modified date on the BSA files in your Oblivion folder.
Archive Invalidation only applies when the files invalidated are older than the new ones. As Steam downloads its files (as opposed to copying them off a disc), the dates on the BSAs will be newer than the dates on downloaded files - at least ones created before the time at which the BSA files finished downloading.

Also, guys, don't be so quick to assume everything is UAC. That only applies to Vista, and nobody uses Vista anymore! At least, nobody sane. Or arguably, anyone who isn't a masochist, although some would argue masochists don't fall under the definition of "sane". Your mileage may vary, though.

^^^
You can use OBMM to reset the timestamps if necessary.

I am doubtful this will help you, though, all the evidence right now points to UAC interference.

No, it doesn't. Please read the bottom of my post (again, if necessary).
Remember; if UAC was the case, he wouldn't be able to copy files into the folder in the first place.

It helps if you don't edit your post after I've already added my reply, and also not to add that info in such a tiny font. :violin:

My point is that UAC makes modding Oblivion a nightmare, and that he will only stand to benefit from moving the game to a folder that is not UAC controlled, as roughly half the board here would also recommend.

The UAC behavior has been modified somewhat from Vista to 7, true. However, it remains true that Windows 7 doesn't like programs that mess with the Program Files directory. When I first switchd to 7, I also thought for a while that my problems were over, but it turned out I was wrong. As long as Steam remains in the Program Files directory, mod files will continue to not be loaded as expected.

We're not being "quick to assume." We're diagnosing behavior according to known causes.

To the OP, do indeed move Steam outside the Program Files directory, and copy your games folders over as described.

This post is almost completely full of false information.

-The dates on the BSA's from STEAM don't have a modified date according to when you purchase and install the game from STEAM. That's just silly. All files retain their 2006 dates. For these dates to actually change you need to actually modify the BSA itself, such as extracting, PyFFI'ng, and repacking will change the date. However if I simply host the file to be downloaded the date is not changed, since the file has not changed. To elaborate further on this, I just recently during the holiday sale purchased Fallout 3 GOTY, which means I downloaded the files in late 2010 from STEAM. However all of the Fallout 3 BSAs are dated 2008, not 2010.

-As far as UAC only applying to Vista, again false. The same principles apply to Windows 7. Just do a quick search around this forum, gamesas, and TESNexus for the number of issues related to UAC and the Program Files directory under Windows 7, or Vista. You'll find literally hundreds, if not thousands, of threads pertaining to this.

And as already noted, it's not quick to assume, it's simple fact. Installing to Program Files, or any other protected directory, is just going to cause problems when it comes to modding. While you can still place files in protected folders that doesn't mean that UAC is going to allow another application to use them, or another .dll (such as OBSE) to hook into them.

Just re-install STEAM and Oblivion to another location to avoid headaches, simple as that. As previously noted, you can backup your STEAM games so you don't have to download them all again. Which could take days depending on the amount of games you own through STEAM.
