Having A Wife

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:39 pm

Games are for having fun.

I thought six was for having fun too.
I like the romp and the journey.

For pretty much the same reason as well....

In all seriousness I actually agree I don't really want six in games, we had enough dodgy games back on the 2600 and the C64.

If your newly married you would be aware of the commitment it takes to have a spouse. If you were some adventure out constantly on missions for his guild, or fighting daedra, or romping dungeons... you probably wouldn't stay married, if you even GOT married.

Although I totally agree with you about the companions. They're probably going to do it just like they did in Fallout 3, so I'm excited! No wife companions though... it would just be awkward. The romance stuff in an elder scrolls game? I don't think so.

To be fair I actually spent 2 years in Calgary Alberta working while my wife was in school back here in Ontario, the first 6 months I was there we weren't engaged yet and got engaged in December, I then spent another year and a half there before we got married, so that counts as an adventure lol

Oblivion is all about having fun in a fantasy world without the unpleasant aspects of the real world such as the inability to jump like a frog on steroids, regenerate fatigue like one, fight mythical creatures, save the planet from demonic hordes, loot treasure from ancient ruins, etc.

Not having a wife would be high on that list if you ask me. Who would want a one in their game as well? Too worldy and mundane not to mention a hassle.

why not. If it has some meaning in the game role playign wise and not just done like in The Witcher I say a some form of sixualty could be nice. It has not to be visual. If you want to create a gritty, rude almost criminal athmosphere for example six can be one way to achieve that in a logical way that you encounter it. Talking about hokers for example, or shady tavers were you have a chance to get informations by seducing (just no spech wheel this time please ...). I mean Morrowind had one such tavern with dancers in the background. It was obvious for what the tavern was. It made the place feel more real and logical. Something I missed with Oblivion a lot as everything just seemd overly "happy". I dont have issue with that ... but all the time ... happy happy joy joy ...

It's optional, like in real life, you don't have to get married if you don't want to, and there are no shotguns in Tamriel so if you get a girl pregnant less chance of having to marry her =)

Well let me put it this way. The time spent by devs to add marriage and six could be better spent making more options available for completing quests or more involved quests or more consequenses or just spend more time on AI in the game. At least that would be my preference. :)

Of course six is fun silly. But pixelated six has never really curled my toes. ;)

It would be interesting, especially if they allowed both same six and opposite six relationships and then you could have children or adopt. That would be awesome really

Yes i think it is a good idea but it depends on how it is done. personaly i would prefer mayby 20 potentiel boyfriends, girlfriends, husband or wifes. 2 from each playable races, 1 of each gender. they would all be quest related and only aviable depending on your actions and race.

But it wouldnt be realistic a place like Tamriel. I dont think that kind of stuff would be legal in Tamriel. I cant imagine two male Argonians going down the street hand in hand and no one rises an eyebrow.

Because, in a videogame, you might be able to get a good looking wife. :D

 Or one that wont [censored] moan and complain. And say do i look fat in this. And you screw up by saying yes. If i saw 2 argonian, khajiit, dark wood or high elf or any of the non human races of tamriel i would run and scream.

I think that would be great, I love that part in Fable and Fable II because while yes you are out saying the world from this that and the other thing it makes it feel a bit more personal when you are thinking about protecting a loved one (of course I argue that there should be kids in oblivion as well, maybe TESV will...one can only hope)

Being married in real-life is enough for me. I don't want the devs to spend too much time working on something like this when there are real issues that need to be corrected from Oblivion.

Actually this could also attach me better to something or somewhere. Both TESs have eventually felt like I don't belong anywhere: When I'm the guildmaster, I'm just a title... No matter where I go it doesn't feel like home. It's like I'm an outcast with right to move around. I'm made to move, no one cares if I'm there for more than 5 second: "Good to see you"

That could of course be solved with better overall NPC interaction and randomized quests, like having to gather items that no one else can for guild. Still, romance belongs in good interaction.

Well weather or not it's appropriate for The Elder Scrolls is anyone's opinion.
I personally don't agree at all with marriage but I'm a bit interested in a sort of unconfirmed romance, like in Half-Life 2. A kid is right out of the question as raising one to an age where you could actually talk to him/her would take at least 5 years in game so it's kind of impractical.
In any case, it's take a lot to make me actually feel something, as in anything other than frustration, for an NPC. The best any game has ever done in this respect is the aforementioned Half-Life 2, especially Episode 2 with Alyx Vance, and that was a LINEAR FPS, meaning that if Valve barely got it right with a lot of pre-scripted behavior and just enough non-scripted gestures to not be repetitive in 10 hours of gameplay, I doubt anybody will make it work in a sandbox game of indefinite length. Then there was Rainbow Six Raven Shield but the only reason I cared there was because, essentially, my team was my weapon son not letting them die was a pretty high priority for me.
Anyway, my point is, if they don't make these would be companions authentic (and/or useful, in a creative way though) enough, they mind as as well scrap the idea and let modders do it, at least in my opinion. And judging by how "well" NPCs were done in Oblivion, Beth should include either better effects for alcohol or anger management classes to go with.

P.S. as previously pointed out, the "optional" argument doesn't stand as development teams don't have unlimited resources.
