Havok - destructive/interactable environments?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:38 pm

After watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a06hAe747Do video clip I wonder if we'll see something like this. Destructive and moveable objects.

Will crates and such no longer stand still no matter what? Will trees be able to be chopped down? Will objects react realistically towards "forces"?
On the video it seemed as if destructive objects were created on a simple click. I wonder if it's that simple; seemed pretty awesome though :)

We know nothing of this yet, so it's just room for speculation and for what you hope/want. Polls are always enjoyable, so there's one too ;)

detroy houses would be maybe too much.
But moveable rocks (telekinesis, or based on strenght), make holes in certain wall to break through, fire that behave well etc.

If it's done within sound constraints, yes.

Probably not. Since there are no firearms in this game :)

But I do believe/hope that if you strike the house with your sword/hammer really hard it will make a "bruise" or a mark.
I hope this destructable environment technology is applied to trees...
We know woodcutting is in the game so... perhaps you can truly (realistically) chop down trees now? :D

Interactable objects is most likely the most relevant thing for Skyrim. We know we'll have some kind of "force" dragon shout. So that might be pretty good. Much more realistic if a "force spell" actually moves object... heh.
Only a few objects will most likely be fully destructable, such as crates, barrels, etc.

**** Just because destructive environments is in a game doesn't mean you can blow up houses or smash stone forts into pieces :P

What about moveable/interactable environments? Do you want crates and barrels stand completely still if a huge dragon smashes into them?
And do you want woodcutters to hit the trees with their axes (without anything happening), until some wood suddenly "spawn/fade" near the tree?

Hehe good point :P
But if anything, I think giant fireballs would just cause things to burn. But that's another question - flammable objects.
I truly hope for that. Perhaps even more than destructable objects... since there are dragons.

Would be awesome to see a village burning by a dragon's flames...

Demon's Souls uses this exact Havok destruction system. It looked superb and added greatly to immersion. Sometimes I crushed every damn crate in my sight just for fun.

From what I understand Digital Molecular Matter is something different. Like a new middleware physics engine, but with the same effect.

We know TES 5 uses Havok. And Havok obviously have a destructive environment feature... so I think that's the most likely thing.
But then again, we never know until a dev confirm it, do we? :P

Well, I really don't care about this. Moveable crates/boxes/barrels/whatever would be nice I guess, But it never bothered me in Oblivion.
As for cutting trees, I'm sure they can come up with a nice animation for the trees.

A nice animation... like the physics from destructive environments, for instance? ;)

---------------------------------

Anyway I think that a feature like this would be most "epic" for avalanches and when dragons attack villages or towns.
A nice avalanche could rather easy be done if a big snow block is made "destructive", and an easy script puts a "force" to it when the player comes near. Or simply when the player walks on it.

the physics we will get will be awsome

cloth, flab, dents,wood,rock etc.

i hope there is cloth physics in the dragon wings. would be awsome seeing them move as they flap. i want to see opponents have loose shirts that move around as they move

Anyway, I didn't say they shouldn't include it, just that I wouldn't care about it.

Come to think of it... weren't mining also to be included in the game?
Seems almost obligatory to have some kind of destructive environment technology added then (to rocks and trees). Mining and woodcutting would seem very weird otherwise... right?

I hope so. Nothing excessive, of course - I was thinking more along the lines of getting rid of annoyingly strong opponents by pushing a few rocks and creating a mini-landslide down a slope, or blocking them in a cavern if you're in a dungeon. Something that would bring more options to a fight. You could create some traps with that, taunting foes to an area you carefully prepared beforehand.

I can assume that destructible items will be in the game. I can also assume that destructible terrain will not be in the game.

I dont think destructible houses are in because they have interior cells, but outside items like barrels and boxes might be, creating fun traps for tougher opponents or hunting a strong animal might be fun.
