Hdmi Cable

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:05 pm

Ok I swear this is my last post on the PS3.

I got it. yay! It is nearly brand new barely played for $175. double yay! now... what Hdmi cable do I need? can someone please send me a link. I don't want to get a wrong cord. I looked online and there were three different options.

The cheapest one you can find

HDMI is digital, it either works or it doesn't. It's not anolog where you can do a few different things to improve the quality. As such there is no purpose in buying the gold-plated gas-injected ones, just buy whatever one is the cheapest you can find and is of the length you need.

It can be cheap, but atleast get something with some length. I grabbed a 3(maybe 2?) foot one once and hated myself, I couldn't put my 360 anywhere but under my tv. That might not be bad for you, but I moved and couldn't use my tv stand so it was a hassle, then whenever I went to a buddies house it was hard to hook up.

My brother used to sell HDMI cables at hhgreg. He can tell you that the expensive ones and the cheap ones give you the same results.

So yea, go for a cheap one. :P

you can buy cords that just have a DVI output instead of the standard HDMI cords which have both ends the same. I know because I have one, and it only cost $10 CND.

and since you never answered my question, what are you doing for audio? you can't just plug computer speakers into your PS3, it doesn't work that way.

thanks! but I got the adapter from the same guy that Nami88 gave the link to for only $5. I want to be able to plug it in to a tv as well when I have to move back to my parents over summer.... booo... haha. Oh I didn't see you asked that question. haha my bad. I have a cord that plugs into the red and white components, and then plugs into my logitech speakers. I actually have two other adapters that do that as well. It's the same set up that works on both 360 and PS3.

and holy friggin crap people! NEVER buy stuff at Radio shack. I literally saved way more money buying online. they totally rip you off... I am glad I finally realize this. No more buying from the shack for me.

That won't work. You can't use component audio with HDMI video. HDMI carries the audio with the video. You'll have to buy some type of splitter to split off the audio. Either that or your monitor needs some speakers and/or a 3.5 mm audio out port (for headphones most likely, but you can plug any speakers into there)

yes it does. I have a friend that has the exact same set up as I do and it works perfectly.

On my 360 I use HDMI for video, and stereo RCA (the red and white ones) converted to 3.5mm for audio. I don't use a splitter, they're both connected separately to my 360. (component is YPbPr and doesn't carry audio anyways  )

same thing my friend uses for his PS3. they are separate and the sound and video works perfectly.

edit- and it is in HD!

Huh, I'm surprised the PS3 sends it on both channels. (good thing I'm not in charge of making the PS3, because I wouldn't have done that :P)

I was surprised to actually. i was thinking I was going to have to buy a whole new set up, but then my friend told me no just get an HDMI cable and a HDMI to DVI and you will be fine. $7 later, I am awaiting them now!

Have you already got it hooked up and everything?

If not, when you do get everything going, your PS3 will ask if you want to display in HD, and will find the best possible resolution for your monitor/TV. but* because it's a used system it may not do it itself, so you have to restart the video settings, which you can find out by searching google a bit.

next you'll have to go to your audio settings and select the W/R audio cables as your audio output, and it should be good to go.

*audio and video setting can be found under "settings" on the XMB menu.

I'll look for a link with a description of how to reset your video settings, otherwise you may just get a blank screen.

here's a good description, I guess finding a link is unnecessary.
Make sure the system is off.

Hold down the Power Button for 5-6 seconds - until you hear the second beep.

That's it, your video settings are reset and you should be able to choose your input and configure it from there.

You probably won't have to do an of this if the previous owner used HDMI, but it doesn't hurt to know. i once went from HDMI to composite for my PS3 and couldn't figure out why I was just getting a blank screen, until I remembered I had it set to display in HD.

you should also know that there are vents along all sides of the PS3, and if you live in a dusty or smokers house, these vents NEED to be cleaned regularly to make sure they don't get clogged with thick dust(mine did). it will overheat and destroy your system.

another good thing to know: google "safe mode ps3 forums" and read about how to go into safe mode, and you may want to "restore file system" to get rid of any corrupt files. this won't completely reset the ps3 to factory settings, but it will get rid of corrupt or misplaced files on the HDD.

if you wish, you can also restore the PS3 to it's original state through safe mode.

and if you have a neighbour with a PS3, beware of controller borrowing!!! I lent my neighbour a controller, got it back and tried using the PS button to turn on my system, and instead turned on his, lol.... I blindly used the controller from my house to turn off his system, and somehow managed it. it's best to avoid it if possible, though.
