HDR or Bloom

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 12:19 pm

So, the other day I was trying to tweak Oblivion to a setting that fits my computer speed, and I saw HDR and Bloom listed. Only one can be on, but what's the difference?

I know bloom makes things look like the sun is hitting them, but what does HDR do?

Also, does anyone know a good video config for a computer with specs of :: 2.2Ghz Dual-Core Pentium, 4GB Ram, and 512MB video? Its a laptop, running Win7 32 bit. Grass slows everything right down, so I have to turn it off :(.

Thanks for any help. :)

I though bloom was a less intense version of HDR lighting. I also once heard bloom was more like a filter while HDR is more 'real' lighting.

Just google HDR vs Bloom to see pics of differences. HDR is supposedly more realistic lighting and will tax the video card more than the less intensive lighting from Bloom. Which is better is based on user-preference. Basically, try each out and see how they are. Most people like HDR, but there are those who feel HDR is too neon-bright in this game and settle for Bloom.

As for game settings, "512MB video card" says very little about the power of the card. There are MANYmore factors than just VRAM....never assume high VRAM for a video card means it's "superpowerful"...it's often times used as an advertising scam to sell cards that are just crap.

Vegetation and shadows are fps killers in this game. Sacrifices are often made. Turn off Self Shadows because they are actually broken.
