Headshots - Non-V.A.T.S.

I was wondering if anyone else has to aim at the neck to get a headshot kill?

My targeting cursor doesn't turn red when I am at the head, I have to lower my sights down to the neck and fire to score a headshot or critical head wound.

For me, I have been aiming at their head. Somewhere in the area between the eyes to the forehead. Oh.... I also have the cursor turned off and am using iron sights.

I've been using the cursor and it seems to be dead on. I haven't aimed low.

Another question while we're on the subject of headshots outside of VATS. Is it just me or do they seem to do far more damage outside of VATS? I seem to be able to one shot kill nearly every humanoid with a single headshot outside of VATS but using VATS the same person may take 2-3 shots.

Cursor working fine here. Turns red when placed on the NPC's head.

Never used VATS but its good to know those of us who actually shoot are getting better results.

To me, it seems like aiming is working fine. With my scope, I am EXACTLY at the head and BOOM :D
Also, it takes a couple headshots sometimes to take out people/critters/watcxhamacallits, so for me there's not a big difference.
Manual aiming is fun, I use VATS sparsely :D

working fine for me, i aim at the base of the neck anyway to sever the spinal cord. i know it makes no difference but im surgical and [censored] :P

Ironsights/scope works best, i only use VATS for up close and personal, or if i want to shoot a weapons out of someone's hand a mile away.

Thanks guys. I'll have to try the iron sights, I've been using cursor.

@ capeo - most definitely outside of V.A.T.S I almost always get a critical. I'll take either, but I'm afraid to say that to loud, don't want them to take it away from us in the next patch.
I think its a fair trade though, because using V.A.T.S is an advantage in itself.

I haven't played F03 in a while, but it seems like when I do use V.A.T.S. in FONV, my action points regenerate a lot faster...?

Long range shots I load AP ammo if armored and aim right between the briasts. When sending .308 rounds down range that pretty much always gets a kill.
