Health Bars VS Health Regenerating!

Post » Thu Dec 31, 2009 1:19 pm

Just wanted to know how you feel about this feature.

Do you like it?if yes,why do you like it?
If you hate it,why do you hate it?

I for one HATE this feature.I'am playing PC games for more then a decade (obviously some guys even more here) now and i think health bars are the best for a shooter and i tell you why.Plain simple.

You just need to care about yourself more in the MP part for instance, while with health regenerating you can just rush onto 1-2 enemys take them down and regenerate your god damn health behind the next corner. (noobfeature x10)

But that's not all.Why does the screen always become so god damn bloody that you can't see **** when you're really low on health?I mean,if you get shot you don't start to bleed out of your eyes!I coul live with some kind of supression effect like in the new "BF3 Fault Line" trailers but this bloody screen is just beyond retarded.

What are your opinions about this feature?Let me hear. :)

Health regen isn't that bad in itself, though I always prefer the addition of something like territorial health regeneration, ie stands with healing kits that teams get to fight over, or something like a medic class.

The red jelly isn't bad in itself either, but the main problem is that it is ridiculously hard to tell just how much health do you actually have left. On a health bar the difference is clear, but with this mechanic you just get varying degrees of red jelly. I've gotten to the point where I can more or less tell when I should duck behind cover and heal, the screen starts to go dark when you get critical.

Still, it took me a lot of time healing when I get even a bit of jelly on my screen, trying to win the guessing metagame with my hud about how much health do I have left. It's just not good.

health regen is totally fine in crysis.. it's just different from counter strike where the levels aren't really designed for heights. In crysis you often fall from some place high and you get falling dmg. With health bars you would probably die so many times from falling damage... and don't tell me "you have to take better care where you jump off then" .. that would just ruin the fun of crysis.

It's also fine because you could say that the nanosuit kinda heals you when you are damaged..

But thats just my opinion

I think it's all much of a muchness in reality, but I know it's dependant on the game. I certainly preferred the health/energy system in Crysis 1 over C2, and the way the armour system on the nanosuite works doesn't seem as efficient anymore and I don't like not having a dedicated set of fists that I can open up. I also preferred the HUD on Crysis 1 - bit too much going on in C2.

These things always come in waves, give it another few years and the trend will go back to health bars instead of health regeneration.

Well, Crysis 1 had a healthbar with regenerating health and no kits. But I prefer having first-aid-kits, espically those you can use when you feel to and not when you touch them (Singularity, Left 4 Dead).

Just wondering, why in the past few years developers got such a huge hate against classic healthbars (or numbers) and prefer the "svcking your thumb in a corner" thing over it. Can't be realism as magicly regenerating health is less realistic than using medical supplies to get rid of wounds (games which explain it in a way like Crysis does are fine, however).

Of course, then we got the latest AvP-game which did both. Aliens got regeneration only (as they seems to be able to in the movies), Predator only got first-aid with minimal regeneration and the Marine got a mix of both - you can only regenerate the third you're currently in and not the full HP. For full, you needed first-aid.
And Killing Floor did a whole different thing - regenerating first-aid to heal wounds as usual. 20HP per "shot", costs 100% on yourself, 50 on other (medics get boni on both, less costs and more regen on shot). Dunno how I should call THAT. But it works.

'Realism' apparently. Don't have a health bar in real life you know (even with a HUD that's biometricly linked to you). Did prefer C1 health/energy system. There have been many times I've caught out with the colour going from clear to dead in less then 2 second. (COD I'm looking at you!)
