Heavily-modded game was running fine for the first in-game d

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:29 pm

Here's my BOSS log. I have run BOSS within Wrye Bash and rebuilt my basehd patch after that. I also ran TES4LODGen. Many of my mods are installed as OMODs. I settled on this selection of mods, began a new game, and had quite good performance, both in terms of stability and frames per second, for little more than a day's worth of Oblivion game time. Now the game is running really slowly outside and crashing constantly, most often when transitiong, either when I open a door or fast travel.

Any advice folks have would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS- Does Oblivion have a memory leak? I notice that it seems to run less well as I play it.

Some detailed notes below in spoiler area. But, some general advice here:

FCOM plus RAEVWD plus Better Cities = performance killer. That's your bottom line. You're going to have to cut some stuff, pare down on others.

In the future, post your load order using Wrye Bash. The BOSSlog doesn't actually specify what is and isn't in your active load order at the moment. It also doesn't give version numbers and some other information.

Spoiler
ClocksOfCyrodiil.esp
. Note: For use with Better Cities use 'ClocksOfCyrodiilBC.esp' or 'ClocksOfCyrodiilOBC.esp' or 'ClocksOfCyrodiil_BC_OBC_OC_OCLR_Vanilla.esp'

ClocksOfCyrodiil_BC_OBC_OC_OCLR_Vanilla.esp
. Note: Deactivate CLocksOfCyrodiil.esp

Don't use both of these, as the directions say.

RAEVWD Cities.esp

RAEVWD New Sheoth.esp

RAEVWD Imperial City.esp

Read the readme for tips on configuring for better performance.

Mart's Monster Mod - More Wilderness Life.esp
. Note: Use either 'More Wilderness Life' or 'More Wilderness Life No Gates' but not both.

Mart's Monster Mod - More Passive Wildlife.esp

Don't use any "more" MMM plugins. Use some "less" plugins for better performance.

Mart's Monster Mod - Farm Animals.esp

Mart's Monster Mod - Diverse WaterLife.esp

Cut these out for better performance.

Francesco's Slower skills x1.5.esp

OOO-Level_Slow.esp

Don't use these. Use something like nGCD instead. Certainly don't use the Fran's and the OOO slowers together.

Francesco's 10 days respawn time - 1-20 day lenght rescale.esp
. Note: Respawn and Timescale mod
. Note: Use only one Respawn or Timescale mod

Upping your respawn time can also contribute to slowdown. Drop this.

gothemasticator

EDIT: PS - No the game does not have a memory leak. But using so many mods will eventually run you out of memory. Check around the forum for threads on performance tips for memory tips.

By the way, each time you rebuild the bashed patch, Wrye Bash needs more memory. I usually check my memory usage with the task manager, and furthermore, I often close Wrye Bash and then open it again before launching the game.

You should probably close Wrye Bash in order to play since even on a fresh start it takes up a significant amount of memory. May as well have as many resources as possible for the game.

The game itself does have memory leaks, but they appear to be small enough that it would take 3-4 hours before they become a problem.

OK, I get that FCOM plus RAEVWD plus Better Cities = performance killer, so that explains my slow framerates (though actually my frames are lowest of all in the forest, either when I'm near a city or not).

I don't keep Wrye Bash open when I play.

What do folks think is causing all these crashes, which have become very common during the 2nd day of ingame time.

PS- would the Wrye Bash thread be the best one to post a question about how to use BAIN to remove RAEVWD? I didn't install RAEVWD as an OMOD, so I am unclear how I can remove it at this point. Does anyone have any advice? I would like to remove it to get a boost in frame rates. Thanks.

How did you install it? Can you not just uninstall it with BAIN? Like OBMM, you can just install the BAIN package and the uninstall it, and that should clean up everything.

Someone told me to do that in an earlier thread, and so I guess that is how I should. I actually haven't done that before, so I will review the FAQ on the Wrye Bash site to see how it's done.

Oh, right, you do not use BAIN to install mods. You should just be able to drop RAEVWD into the Bash Installers folder (created upon initializing BAIN) and follow the directions here - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=bain_installation

Well, this is a nice surprise. Turns out I DID use Bain to install RAEVWD. Ha, I didn't even remember doing so. Is it as easy as just right clicking on both RAEVWD Installers (SI edition and v1_7 edition) and clicking Uninstall?

In all honesty...

Hint...I have 254 mods going...and mine was crashing fairly consistently...but then I got rid of a BG mod that changed NPC's looks to 1300 different varieties...now things don't crash anymore.

If it crashes when going through a door or fast travelling it's probably because it's trying to load to much. It's probably just running out of memory. Have you tried using the 4GB patch? And how much RAM do you have?

I removed and deleted RAEVWD via the installers tab in Wrye Bash, ran BOSS, rebuilt my bashed patch, and ran TES4LODGen. Restarted Oblivion but my framerates are still miserable (I can tell RAEVWD is gone b/c there's only a misted mountain range in the distance, with Frostcrag spire no longer visible), likely around 10-15 per second, even when I am in the forest and not near a city. I have Streamline set for a minimum fps of 25 and checked that it is indeed modifying the graphics settings. Interestingly, I turned off the Steamsmoothing function in Streamline, so that it wouldn't adjust visual settings on the fly, and saw no great decrease in performance. More stuff was visible onscreen, the framerates were still lousy, but not really noticably worse.

Also, my game is crashing, and not just during fast travel or when opening a door.

What I don't understand is the fact that, with all the same mods I am running now (and with RAEVWD), when I first left the sewers and was outside (a few days ago in real life time), the game was running pretty well, with relatively fluid performance. But when I loaded up from my save game right before leaving the sewers and went outside, the frames were the same awful level they are now, and the game crashed after about 10-15 minutes.

So, it seems that something has changed for the worse, both in terms of framerates and stability, but I am not sure what it is and what is the best way to determine what it might be.

My revised load order, from Wrye Bash:

If it crashes when going through a door or fast travelling it's probably because it's trying to load to much. It's probably just running out of memory. Have you tried using the 4GB patch? And how much RAM do you have?

It's now crashing just when I am wandering around. I have 4GB Memroy, Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz, ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

In OBSE, I have Oblivion Stutter Remover and I did apply the 4Gig patch to the Oblivion.exe

I ran Crysis and other games (latest BF2 game, Metro 2033, Stalker, Bioshock 2, Far Cry 2) at pretty high settings and with very smooth performance. So I am disapointed so far at how sluggish Oblivion is runnning, even with RAEVWD removed.

Are you sure you are using Heap Replacement for OSR?
bReplaceHeap should be set to 1

Heap replacement for OSR was set to 0, so I set it to 1. Under FPS_Management, I set MaximumFPS at 40 and MinimumFPS at 25. It had been at 30 max and 10 min. 10 is way too slow though. Are 25 min and 40 max advisable settings?

Well making the above change and removing my Oblivion ini folder to allow it to rebuild seems to have make a huge difference in frame rates. Much much better now.

I notice though that there is very very large font text on all the ingame settings, such that i cannot easily see things like the key settings, video setttings, etc. There are very large numbers and letters there now. I assume this has something to do with having the Oblivion.ini settings being reapplied as default. I have DarkULD Darn UI so maybe some changes it made to my Oblivion.ini (if it did so) have been overwritten by default. Does anyone know?

It sounds like you are using the large font tweaks. Just alter your font set for DarN via Bash's INI Tweaks. Wrye had the two? DarN font settings packaged with Bash, so you will find it in the INI Tweaks tab (ready to be applied.)

In INI Edits in Wrye Bash, I see Fonts 1, ~Default.ini and Fonts, Default.ini but no info. re: which is which. Both are checked.

Contents of Fonts 1:
[Fonts]
SFontFile_1=Data\Fonts\Kingthings_Regular.fnt

Fonts:
[Fonts]
SFontFile_1=Data\Fonts\Kingthings_Regular.fnt
SFontFile_2=Data\Fonts\Kingthings_Shadowed.fnt
SFontFile_3=Data\Fonts\Tahoma_Bold_Small.fnt
SFontFile_4=Data\Fonts\Daedric_Font.fnt
SFontFile_5=Data\Fonts\Handwritten.fnt

Not sure which to edit, or which (if any) to uncheck.
Just read the Darnified UI read me and a thread about configuring it in game (http://darnified.net/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=dacafmn2vffotdn9e9cti89p76&topic=33.0) but don't see any specific settings for font size.

Edit- it does't look like the Darnfonts are actually in the Wrye Bash INI Edits two Font choices. From the Darn UI reade me, listing the fonts:

Normal fonts:
[Fonts]
SFontFile_1=Data\Fonts\Kingthings_Regular.fnt
SFontFile_2=Data\Fonts\DarN_Kingthings_Petrock_14.fnt
SFontFile_3=Data\Fonts\DarN_Kingthings_Petrock_16.fnt
SFontFile_4=Data\Fonts\DarN_Oblivion_28.fnt
SFontFile_5=Data\Fonts\Handwritten.fnt

Is it possible they were overwritten when Oblivion generated a new Oblivion.ini file? Darn UI is present in the game though, it's just the font sizes for the ingame menus are now very large, and a different font than they were with the Darn UI

Easy way: Make an omod of darnui and install it. It should automatically configure the ini.

Yep, the fonts I have now are vanilla:

Yep- confirmed that the fonts I have now are indeed the vanilla fonts:

"
To reset the small font back to the original font:
Edit "My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini"

Here are the original font names:
SFontFile_1=Data\Fonts\Kingthings_Regular.fnt
SFontFile_2=Data\Fonts\Kingthings_Shadowed.fnt
SFontFile_3=Data\Fonts\Tahoma_Bold_Small.fnt
SFontFile_4=Data\Fonts\Daedric_Font.fnt
SFontFile_5=Data\Fonts\Handwritten.fnt
