[Reqz] Heavy Incinerator Optimisation

Post » Wed Sep 29, 2010 12:53 pm

Playing the game at 1680x1050, Ultra settings with Ambient Occlusion on and the game run at a fairly smooth 50-60 FPS, but whenever I come across a hostile NPC with a Heavy Incinerator the game turns into a slideshow. I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with either the multiple moving light sources it creates or the number of sound effects. It has a muzzle sound when you fire it, the projectile has a sound effect when it's flying through the air, the explosion when it hits the ground, and then the sound effect of things burning that it sets on fire and all of those happen 2 or 3 times a second.

Anyway, that'd be my guess, anyone think they might be able to strip something out that would stop the Incinerator being such a massive resource hog?

Do you have AA turned off? Because that often causes problems.

I have the same res, and everything at ultra high EXCEPT AA, and I have no idea about Ambient Occlusion (running off an ATI Radeon HD5770) and I've had no problems with the Heavy Incinerator.

Yes I have AA on, and I'm not willing to turn it off for the sake of one ill-thought out weapon, the game looks horrible without it.. Hence the mod request.

It's down to the refraction effects on the incinerator explosion, most likely. Given what IK's found it's probably a weird quirk of AA spazzing out trying to process distorted images.

I find Anti-Aliasing to be terrible, why do you feel that blurring the game's graphics to be imperative? You sound almost like the person I saw complaining that the game isn't worth playing without Arwen's mods; perhaps overstating the case slightly, hmm?

edit: Hey, Toaster, you're one of my favorite modders from Oblivion; glad to see you're here and participating in New Vegas! I'll be downloading everything you post, that's for sure!

The lag it brings is not even worth it. I don't see how the game looks terrible without it, I've played games without it for several years and they look perfectly fine.

@Toaster: Best mod EVAR.
Also, where do you find that bot again? I found it at the beginning of the game, couldn't fix it because of my shoddy science skill, or whatever was needed, and now that I can, I don't remember where it is located.

Ha, that's certainly stretching my modus operandi of downloading anything that sounds interesting, I'll give it that much. :) Honestly, though, I'd kill to have you just randomly crapping something new out every day days like Kobu seems to; most of the ideas you guys produce are just stellar in practice.

edit: Thanks for chiming in, Knight, I'm glad I'm not alone on the AA hate. E-DE is located in Primm at the Nash residence.

Oh, you're definitely not alone. Tons of it in the gaming community, at least from what I've seen. Don't know why anybody hasn't taken the time to fix it, as far as developers of both games and graphics cards go.

Ah, right. I was looking in Goodsprings. Thanks!

AA isn't as simple as blurring the image. It's a decently complicated process that should only be affecting polygon borders and is in general more correct/accurate. That said, I am in the camp that could care less about AA, but I'm also running the game at 1920x1200 so your mileage may vary ;)

If you think anti aliasing just blurs the screen then you have an extremely poor grasp of how it works.

No but your right, it's so much better when power cables are made up of strobing dotted lines, hanging wires are missing large chunks and distant radio masts are just a bundle of random oscillating pixels. And look at that blur, how could you live with that? It's like having cataracts right?

Yeah, in that one single case, it looks great. It's still not worth the performance hit even for the most basic of 2xAA.

Well maybe I'm crazy but personally when I'm faced with the choice between getting rid of shimmering grass, strobing lines, invisible chain link fences, jaggy character models, disappearing distant objects, and missing parts from complex shapes with 4xTransparent AA OR a 5-10 FPS performance boost when I'm already running at 60+ I'm going to go with anti-aliasing thanks.

Similarly, when I'm faced with the choice turning off AA and bringing back all those issues or modding out the virtually imperceptible distortion effect on a single weapon that's causing a problem, I'm going to go with getting rid of the effect...which is why I'm asking for the mod. Now any chance you could stop derailing the thread?

How am I derailing the thread when you're the one who's here trying to defend the honor of Anti-Aliased gaming like it's your brainchild?

Sorry but the anti-anti-aliasing argument really bugs me. Some elitist t*** with a 3,840 x 2,400 resolution monitor went round about 5 years ago and told all the kids how AA wasn't cool, it just blurs everything (which as I've already proven; is [censored]) and now any time anyone mentions it anywhere on any forums someone pipes up with "Why are you using AA?" despite it being being second only to anisotropic filtering for biggest increase in visual quality for lowest impact on performance.

I shouldn't get so annoyed about it, but it's a pet peeve ?_?

Fully understood and you have my sympathies; I hate any form of ignorance as well. You've actually proven to me the opposite, that AA actually does improve your image, I'd just never seen it in such a blatantly obvious case as in New Vegas with the fences and power lines and radio towers in the distance being turned into complete images instead of pixelated half-hearted attempts at a proper rendition. So you've won me over, take that to heart for the night, haha. :)

Lakelurks appear to have the same issue with their range attack causing stutter when AA is enabled. Would be nice to add that if anyone feels like fixing this issue.
