Heavy,medium or light?

Another major advantage to starting as a Light is that their restricted weapon selection will not be as much of an issue initially since you will not have unlocked many weapons. In this manner you can expand the Light's arsenal as you play and should you ever desire to switch to a Medium or Heavy you will have access to all of those weapons.

To be honest the best starting strategy is probably to run Light then Medium and lastly Heavy due to how the weapons overlap. This will allow you to use everything unlocked from the previous type on the current one whereas unlocking weapons for a Heavy has no benefit for a Light or Medium.

Well, I'm gonna be a light for one playthrough, then a heavy on the other team for my second playthrough, then I'll make a medium and have 3 characters for doing what I want from then on, so the weapons thing isn't a big deal. Thing is, you have to start with a medium until you unlock light and heavy types.

Where did you hear that you don't start with medium/heavy weapons?

Sure you have a starting weapon, but the rest will unlock as you level. It's not like you have the entire arsenal of weapons available at level 1.

What I mean is that the weapons are compatible with any type above their weight qualification. So a Light can only use light weapons, while a Medium can use light and medium weapons and lastly a Heavy has access to everything. So if you start as a Heavy you will have a starting weapon but will have to unlock weapons as you level. If you then switch to either a Light or Medium you will be unable to use any of the heavy weapons. The opposite is not true if you start as a Light and then switch to a Medium or Heavy as both of those can use any light weapon.

Well, that's true, but if you choose a light weapon as a Heavy, then you're not using your loadout slots to their full capacity. A Heavy can carry a Heavy weapon and a Medium weapon, and I think I'd rather tote an assault rifle or shotgun as my secondary than an SMG. I can't refute your point as applies to switching back to Medium after playing Light for a while, but the same principle means you could also just stay Medium, and then use your Medium unlocks as a Heavy. Or, switch to Heavy, and just unlock Medium weapons, and then switch back to Medium ...

Your idea is certainly valid, but it has more diverse implications than you brought up.

As for my reply to the thread title, I think I'm going to stick with Medium on my first character. All three of the body types appeal to me, though. I kind of hope Splash Damage goes back on what Richard Ham said about not being able to change body types during a match, because sometimes the way the other team is playing will give you a strong incentive to change types (or so my TF2 experience suggests to me), and I don't want that incentive to result in people changing characters in order to gain a tactical advantage. It'd be nice if the full flexibility of the 3x4 class system were available within a round.

Considering Light and Heavy are unlockables, though, I kind of doubt that matches Splash Damage's philosophy here. Oh well, I'm the kind of person who'll cultivate a bunch of different characters anyway.

I'm going Light to start. I want to master the art of the Smart :D

I think I've red in a few places that you have to unlock heavy and light, so everyone would be starting with mediums.
