Hebrews 1:11

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 10:16 pm

Bethesda isn't known for being the greatest at writing stories, but they still bring some originality to a story that's been told thousands of times.
It's classic science fiction, which often borrows from mythology and religion.

Basically every story ever told has allusions in it. It's near impossible to find one that doesn't.
This is know as the thematic concept, which are the ideas in the story that cause the audience to consider what the story is about, not what the story is doing.

There was plenty of purified water in the Fallout series...[before FO3], but the Vault's internal water purifier was broken, and they would not leave the vault to save themselves. The PC could afford to send a water caravan to them with a three month supply of water ~for 1000 or so inhabitants. It cost 2000 caps.

Bottled water [here in Louisiana] costs $1 a gallon. At a gallon a day (say), and a thousand gallons for a thousand people. That's 90,000 gallons for for three months. That's $90,000 for a three month supply of bottled water [without shipping charges]. Even if they bought half that for the vault, it still costs more here for bottled water than there.

It is objectively damaging to the value of the characters, therefore it was very stupid. They literally changed the GECK just so their silly metaphor would "work"

How is religion damaging to the characters?

And how is religion the reason they screwed up the G.E.C.K? Leaving religion out of the story would have still see them misusing the G.E.C.K. Purifying Water was the story religion or no.

Yes I get its been over done and is cliche but so is every game/movie/tvshow/book/etc made in the last 200+ years. Hell every fallout game has used cliches and over done nonsense it's not new to the series.

Can you come up with completely original idea that has never ever been done before ever? I'm betting you probably can't.

They didn't change the GECK anymore then Fallout 2 did from the description in Fallout 1's manual, which is to say completely.

Chris Avellone himself even said the GECK is LITERALLY just a mcguffin plot device that can work any way you want it too.

Im not repeating myself, i already described how the religious component devalued the characters' intelligence in the concept of Project Purity. They needed the Project to work but they couldnt come up with any reasonable way to make it function without the GECK which they changed into a McGuffin Device just for the story and it's symbolism to "fit". No "magical purification device"---> no pure water ---> no "good trumps evil" cliche ---> no absolution of the religious symbolism

And as I've already pointed out the purifier came before the verse was related to it. it's her favorite verse because of the purifier that she was already working on.
It does not in any way shape or form make the characters look stupid. Unless you're one of those people who believe that if you're religious you must be stupid.
And it wasn't Bethesda that change the G.E.C.K to a MacGuffin Black Isles did that with the second game.

Also good job coming up with a better original idea.

But go ahead and leave with your super smartness that no one else can come close to. You're clearly superior to everyone else on this board and we should all be in awe of you.

Says who? Cite your source that the Purifier came before the Verse

It doesnt take a genius to recognize a big red sign in front of your face that says "we didnt try"

Slight correction. The Fallout 2 GECK didn't work like a mcguffin.

It was Avellone in the Fallout bibles, made years after Fallout 2, that retconed the GECK into a mcguffin.

Did you listen to any of the dialogue in the game? It makes it incredibly obvious.

Also still waiting for your superior really awesome idea that would've been so much better.

Originally the Geck was just a hook for a sequel; invented by the original Fallout team. They put it in the back of the Fallout game manual as a vault-tec advert; after they were told there would be a Fallout sequel.

I did listen to the dialogue, it never says even 1 time that she "discovered the verse" after the project began, you still havnt cited a single source

Why are you demanding sources when you haven't provided any of your own?

Its perfectly logical that Catherine liked the verse because it tied in with her work, a large scale water-purification project, not because she had an "epiphany" one day while reading the bible that she should make a purifier. That's never implied at all.

And it never once says she only thought of the purifier after reading the verse.

I'm sure she knew of the verse from before but it wasn't what inspired the purifier. It was watching the suffering of the people.it was watching people become sick from radiation that made her want clean water. James flat out tells you this if you talk to him after saving him from 12.

Once again still waiting for you to Comer up with something better that's not a cliche.

That isnt "perfectly logical", neither way is logical, which goes to show how poorly Bethesda wrote the plot

No he doesnt! He never says that, he says it is her favorite verse. He says later on that "dont you see? Rev 216!" which implies it was the inspiration! This Bethesda brown-nose garbage is sickening, it is like possum has been injecting people with his absurdity or something

Actually it is logcial, like seriously out of all my years of talking to people about Fallout 3 you are the first person I've ever seen to suggest that the Bible made her make the purifier.

Uh...what? What in the world is illogical about someone liking a bible verse because it reminds them a bit of their work/passion? Lots of people have favorite book/bible passages that they keep around because it ties in with their lives or is personal to them somehow.

Look, the Fallout 3 storyline was poorly written for many reasons. This is not one of them. The blatant plot-holes and contradicting story information are far more pressing matters.

Fallout 3 had a serviceable, if predictable plot. The presence or lack of religion was secondary to the whole purpose of Project: Purity. Sounds like Warpsmith just doesn't like religion to the point where it tainted his/her enjoyment of the game. Its okay to not like everything that a design team did in a game. For me, the plot was about #47 on my list of things that I liked about Fallout 3. Exploration was #1. In fact, I rarely seek to finish the main plot of a Bethesda game. There is just too many nooks and crannies to explore. Not sure why this is starting to smoke like a proto-flamewar. Just a difference of opinion about religion, the significance to the plot, and the relative level of enjoyment.

Yes he mentions the verse but then goes on to talk about how different the wasteland is from the vault with the suffering and how much that hurt your mother and how much she wanted to help the people and so she decided to build the purifier. It never says she didn't know what to do until the verse.

Seriously this story would have svcked balls whether bible verses were mentioned or not.

Just what we need at this stage to break the tension! Although I'll need a minute to figure out where this fits into the story :D

EDIT: I think it's actually something to do with Shaun. According to my calculations, him being born in September 2077 would tie in nicely with 'a few too many' on the previous New Years Eve! :deal:

The plot was awful I don't think anyone disagrees about that part.

Basically the only reason I'm even talking is because as you said it's obvious that they hate religion which is totally fine with me, but they should own up to hate instead of trying to pretend they understand the plot better then anyone else.

It's the lack of owning up to oneself and the snobbery towards the other posters that annoys me.
