Hello everybody. I'm new to the forum, and the Elder Scrolls

Post » Sun Oct 09, 2011 9:42 am

So hello there. I just joined here because for the first time, I've just watched the video demos for Skyrim. I've known about Skyrim since the announcement, and have known about the series for a while. But I've never played the games, nor had a very strong interest in them other than thinking that Oblivion and now Skyrim look pretty cool. But now after watching the demo videos, I'm excited to a point that I only rarely get with videogames. I had a pretty good idea what the Elder Scrolls games were like, but man, watching Skyrim footage has absolutely amazed me. I've rarely played any RPGs like this, but I do seem to like this genre of game. I haven't played a game like this since PS2 days when I was a kid. I remember there was a huge, open world RPG with lots of weapons and enemies and dragons and that sort of thing, but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it. I really wish I could though. But this Skyrim demo has made me realize how much I want the game. I love this sort of huge game that just entirely immerses you in the world and the story. I don't play enough games like that, and it seems that Skyrim will be the best of the best.

So I look forward to spending time here and learning about the series, even though I don't understand 90% of what I've read here so far! Haha. Hopefully I can figure things out quickly so I'm not completely oblivious when playing Skyrim.

Edit: Whoa, I Googled the only thing I really remember from the PS2 game, and it was called Drakan: The Ancient's Gates.

The only two games I could think of fitting your description on the PS2, would either be A Bard's Tale or The Summoner.

Anyway, I hope you like The Elder Scrolls series. Bethesda Game Studios (The developers) put a lot of care and effort into all of their games, and unlike Shooters or Sports games, there isn't a large market saturation, nor is there really any others quite like The Elder Scrolls games. More players and fans means the series will continue to live on.

Welcome to the machine!

If you haven't already, I'd pick up the Oblivion Game of the Year Five Year Anniversary Edition. It comes with the expansion for Oblivion and the DLCs(Downloadable Content. Extra patches that add stuff to the game. They cost, but are not required. They are free with the GotY edition.), and it runs about $20.

If you like that, you may even want to try Morrowind!

This, that is the site you need if you want to learn about the lore of the series, and you chose the right game if you like to get extremely immersed within a game word.

You beat me to it!!!

See the importance of the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages? Anything and EVERYTHING about the Elder Scrolls is probably there.

There is a second wiki. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Skyrim_Wiki But I recommend the UESP.

I wouldn't recommend using the UESP too much, however. I did, and ruined Oblivion for myself. :meh:

I'll be completely honest. I didn't read anything you said. But here's my advice to you:

If you can play old games and if dated graphics don't make you throw up, download and play Arena and Daggerfall (gamesas released them for free).

If you can't play old games and if dated graphics do make you throw up... or just whenever you're done playing Daggerfall, buy Morrowind either on steam or some other way, and download the mod shown here: http://youtu.be/2r6hilB6Dlc

People will tell you about all these crazy mods to play for Morrowind and that there's so much out there. It's true. But start with that mod. It's REALLY easy to set up (video instructions) and it makes the game look a lot better and just adds a lot to the atmosphere of it.

And if you haven't already played Oblivion... It's fun, but after playing those others (namely, Daggerfall and Morrowind), it's going to be very underwhelming.

Hi there, Firstly welcome to The Elder Scrolls. Secondly this game is set 200 years after the events of oblivion so i wouldnt worry about understanding the story line but if you do ffeel the need to learn a bit of the lore of these games there is a lore section in the forums, im sure they will have information on anything you wish to know and even a few rumors that i found interesting, in any case im sure you like all of us will enjoy the incredible game that bethesda has poured alot of time and effort into and will agree that this game will raise the bar on the quality of games in the future. :)

Everything and anything Lore is legal, if you're not really playing any Elder Scrolls at the moment.

And the Imperial Library is probably too hardcoe. It's probably the most hardcoe information source about the Elder Scrolls I've seen.

PS: Do you have an enlarged image of your troll-faced troll? I find it hilarous, and plan to use it elsewhere, for the trolls.... Perhaps add a subtitle. "OBVIOUS TROLL IS OBVIOUS" and whatnot.

Skyrim looks to be the most accessible of TES yet, when you consider all the streamlining of the player skills and leveling mechanics. I think you picked the right game to enter the series.

EDIT: Be sure to read as many of the in-game books as you can. They will help you to understand the Elderscrolls world better.

You have such a wonderful journey ahead of you. Welcome to the forums. When you go to Skyrim, it'll feel natural quickly. I remember becoming the Hero of Kvatch in Oblivion at Level 2 and looking back, I'm not quite sure how but I did it and it was fun....and scary. Ah, such a wonderful journey. Oblivion is my favorite game of all time and I fully expect Skyrim to surpass all the things I love about it. :)
