Has it been confirmed as to whether or not NPC's will speak to each other intelligently?
The above is merely one example of many ridiculous conversations you will overhear,
and I'm concerned that this annoying feature will make a return in Skyrim.

Yeah, i'm interested to know as well.

Apparently, they had to dump a lot of dialogue in Oblivion to fit everything on to one disc. That shouldn't be such a problem this time round so hopefully that will make a big difference to the standard of NPC conversations.

Why wouldn't it be a problem this time around?

There was already a significant improvement in Fallout 3, so I don't think you need to worry about it.

found new ways to compress audio, they said there are no more limitations to how much dialog they can fit on the disk now, well technically there is, but you get the drift.

Nah, they're pretty committed to having the 360 version on one disc. But new compression techniques that have come out in the past few years allow them to put more audio on a single disc.

That doesn't seem to be a limitation though, I've been seeing posts about other games that have several discs. So it's just a matter of preference and not really a technical hurdle.

it's going to have 2 discs? I don't like that cuz I don't want to have to change the disc all the time. maybe everybody will still talk about seeing mudcrabs all the time lol.

The problem is more that the 'gossip' system was built poorly. People would gossip about themselves in third person. There weren't any checks to determine who was engaging in conversation, what topic they had discussed last and with who they had talked, etc. leading to the example the OP pointed out.

Yeah I'm sure they've worked a lot on it, I mean those are a TON of NPC's with which to give unique dialogue to, so I cant really fault them for having a few issues in that. It was silly, but it was one of those things that wasnt a huge bother to me. We'll just have to wait until the game comes out for this though

That's what hard drives are for. The days of having to swap discs are long over.

Yes, I agree the problem was more than just lack of dialogue. However, most of the dialogue was so generic there wasn't much incentive to build a system around it. Hopefully, with more conversation available they will polish the dialogue system to take full advantage.

Watching the Oblivion E3 demo recently the thing that jumped out at me was the NPC's greeting each other by name and talking a bit about each other. That immediately gave a sense that they actually knew each other, whereas in the final game all we got were random conversations between random people.

Belanos so you just install 1 to the 360 hard drive and then use the other one to play then?

I'm not completely sure but I believe that every 360 game that has had two discs did not require the material on the second disc - you could install it if you chose to, but you also had the option of not using it. That wouldn't work with a disc that contains necessary dialogue for the game. I think MS actually requires games to fit all necessary content on one disc, because originally there were 360s with no hard drive being sold. I think it's terrible to limit games by the capabilities of 5 year old consoles, but my opinion won't change corporate policy.

You could install the entire game on the hard drive, only requiring the disc as a form of copy protection. You can get a 250 GB hard drive for the 360, which would fit quite a number of games on it.

I think MS actually requires games to fit all necessary content on one disc,

If that were true, why would they bother being able to add a hard drive to them? If the original 360's didn't have that capability, then it would only be in Microsoft's best interest to have people upgrade.

Well, Bethesda improved character dialogue in Fallout 3, and the new engine and increased amount of dialogue will likely improve it even further. I don't think we need to worry about this to a significant degree.

Ahahaha. I loved NPC conversations like this.

I once encountered 2 NPC's talking where it went:

Guy #1: Hello.
Guy #2: I don't know you, and I don't wish to know you.
Guy #2: I don't know you, and I don't wish to know you.

He literally just stood there and said it like 5 or 6 times. It was hilarious.

I can top this:

*While waiting for the guards to quit eating and go on patrol so I could break into the tower*
Guard 1:"Hey, has anything interesting happened to you today?"
Guard 2:"Had something of a false alarm earlier. Some Khajiit, acting suspicious. Turns out he was just grooming his tail."
Guard 1:"No heroics now, all right? Remember your training and do what you have to do, but don't take any unnecessary risks. "
Me:>.>...
Even the guards take furrys as a real serious threat.
