Helmet Problems

Greetings,

I am starting this thread in hopes of tracking down an annoyance. I thought there was a mod or something that dealt with this... and after digging through the files on my drive I finally found what I was looking for. It's something called Imperial Helmet Fix. The RAR has a subdirectory in it called DBImperialGuard, and then an EGM and 3 NIFs. It's been a couple of months now, so I can't remember what this was for or where it came from... and especially if I installed it correctly. It has no readme or anything descriptive other than the title.

Anyway, some helmets in the game are not rendering properly... as if they weren't put together quite right. But most are fine... and I'm not just talking about vanilla helmets; most helmets from mods are fine, too. However, some of the guards' helmets are affected, as are the dread armor and blades elite helmets (some others as well, but these are all I have screens for).

Any ideas as to what I did wrong here? Or if the above mentioned "fix" has anything to do with it?

I've been encountering the same problem on some of the imperial guard. I haven't been able to detect any pattern yet, as it seems some guard helmets are fine.

If you could post a link or upload the patch I would love to try out the fix. For now, I shall look through my bain install and see what mod originally adds those files. Perhaps it a second mod adding a bad mesh for the texture?.

The folder order is meshes/armor/dbimperialguard.

it looks like the head is clipping through the helm, so either shrinking the heads or enlarging the helmets should do the trick, though i have no idea why you'd be encountering this. My guess is that since it's only a few npcs, that those few have slightly bigger heads then most. Try editing the head in the cs and see if it fixes anything :)

Thanks for the input... feeling a little less crazy now! And yes, I was able to ascertain where the files should go... I mentioned the sub-dir here just for completeness (and also to demonstrate how little info I have on this thing!)

I've put it up on 4shared... may I PM you the link? I don't want to inadvertently distribute something I'm not 100% sure about.

And thanks again. I was beginning to doubt myself... again...

check if you have custom head mesh, or maybe egm files broke if you pyffied the meshes

.EGM file is needed for morphing helmet around head to make it fit. If there's no .EGM file for the helmet mesh, you need to create one with http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9360.

That's a good suggestion. Since I'm lazy, I think I'll try stealing a couple helms first and trying them on my own character.

The meshes are definitely added by OOO. I am currently using 1.33 with the 1.34b5 update so it should be working fine. So maybe the guards have fat heads (possibly caused by COBL TNR?). Another possibility is that a mod with a .bsa that loads after OOO is conflicting somehow.

@Vegtabill: Yes, please pm me the link. :)

@Chewu and LFact: OK, didn't know those existed. Where are .egm files kept? Also, I downloaded a pyffi update to OOO that then could possibly have been the cause.

Thanks B.C., but I don't think that's it. For one thing, the helmets I own look the same on my PC and on any of the mannequins I put them on. I'm using the new-ish Skin Toned Mannequins, so we're talking about 10 different heads (well, 20 actually if you count the sixes... or is it 18?), plus one for my PC. The ones that are broken are broken on any head I put them on. The ones that aren't, well, aren't (lol).

But also, if you look close, it's not clipping. The helmet sections themselves have gaps between them. It's not that the heads are poking through; rather, the helmets have gaps you can see the heads through.

Still, I appreciate the suggestion!

EDIT: Sorry Chewu, I only answered the second half. The first half would be no, I don't. Sorry for missing that.

.EGM file is needed for morphing helmet around head to make it fit. If there's no .EGM file for the helmet mesh, you need to create one with Conformulator.

There is an EGM.

@ all: I did not post my load order, but I can if needed. I'm not running TNR, but I do have Cobl Cosmetics (I think that's right).

Welp, the imperial helmet fix hasn't worked. Thanks for the link though! I'll try and figure out how to use the conformulator later today.

I can confirm the error on tarnished helms and plumed helms, both of which are added by OOO according to refscope.

I get this problem too. All i can say is that its defiantly OOO related. Hey, do you think it could be those 'optimized' OOO files? Has anyone else tried those?

That definitely looks like a failed Pyffi attempt. And I've seen reports of that before.

That may be, but if so I didn't do it. I did Pyffi meshes, but I stayed away from anything that was not architecture, clutter, dungeons, furniture, landscape, plants, rocks or sky. I am sorry to hear that others have this issue too, but I must say it is nice to hear it's not just me. If it is a failed Pyffi attempt, it is in a mod. Man, if it does turn out to be OOO, I'll really be surprised... seems like it would have been more widely noticed by now.

Well, from the way that thread ended it sounds like I need to wait for a fix, or not use the Pyffied meshes. Like I said, it's an annoyance, so I can deal with it. I just thought there was an easy fix out there.

We might be able to convince PacificMorrowind to test his new Pyffi version on them, or at least post a small package of the original files to replace the bad ones.

The tarnished helmet's id is 0400D853. I'm in the middle of making dinner right now, but I'll try and track down the others later. :foodndrink:

Checked my version (OOO bsa) of the Rusty Imperial Horseman Helmet, Blades Elite Helmet, and the tarnished helmet (the above formID), and they all look okay.

That's cool... I figured most people did not have this problem or more would have reported it (and known what I was talking about). I am running the optimized meshes and the optimized meshes for the beta patch, same as the thread showler posted a link to.

I totally spaced that today is my step-son's birthday... I'll still be able to get those IDs, but not until much later tonight. I'll update when I have them.

In the mentime though, I am still very curious about this Imperial Helmet Fix thing. That is actually what started this in the first place; I http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1096133-mod-detectives-113/page__st__40__p__16018652__fromsearch__1&#entry16018652 about it originally. The link showler posted (above) even has a mention of it, but so far no one has been able to tell me where it came from or what it's for. I'd really just like to know if I need it, or can just go ahead and toss it in the trashcan.

Anyone have any insight on this part?

As far as I know, the Helmet Fix file is supposed to be the un-pyffied versions (original versions) of those helmets that went bad in the pyffing process. Installing it should fix the problem for you.

It should be on the same page as the OOO optimized files at TESNexus. edit: here: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23202

Have you compared the file sizes for whats in that file with what's in your Data folder?

I have not, but I will ASAP. For what it's worth, Snargelfargen tried that last night, but it did not correct the problems discussed in this thread.

OK, here we go... the files I have installed are, in fact, the ones from the Imperial Helmet Fix, so I must have installed them when I set this build up. Nevertheless, the helmets in question remain screwy. Of course, none of them are from the DBImperialGuard directory, so it makes sense that this did not fix them.

I was able to break away from the birthday thing ( 18-year-olds don't really want the parents hanging around anyway... at least not after the presents have been handed out! ). That has given me time to get the IDs for the three helmets I linked to in the original post.

Per FormIDFinder:

I am 99% certain I have seen this somewhere else as well, but I can't remember where. I'll be sure to get the info if I do see it again.

Fix them it did, thank you very much! Are these new, or did they come from older meshes? The only reason I ask is so that maybe I can grab the files I need if/when I run into this again. I really try to figure out and fix as much as I can without muddying up the forums.

Alternatively, I suppose I could move to the BSA version... but man, I really am hesitant to do so. This is the first (relatively) stable FCOM build I've made, and I enjoy playing it so much. I hate to risk messing it up...

But I digress. I am suddenly more excited about developing my PC's heavy armor skill now just so she can wear the full Dread Armor! Thank you, showler... your help is greatly appreciated.
