Help me choose implants!

Post » Sun Jun 06, 2010 12:10 am

Hey all,

I'm currently in the New Vegas clinic and I am in some doubt over the choice of implants. Could anyone advise me?

Current stats:

ST 6 (with an implant I already got; with Weapons Handling I'll be able to use endgame guns like the AMR and the LMG if I want; I don't plan to use miniguns). I have close to 45 000 caps and can raise more if necessary.

PE 6

EN 5

CH 5

IN 8

AG 6

LK 6

My understanding is that I can have four more implants. Should I max Luck, for max critical chance and casino winnings? Or should I get subdermal armor? Or higher Agility?

My vote for implants[implants can be taken once per STAT]
Luck
Dub-dermal armor
Then maybe endurance and agility. Depending on your current level intelligence might be minorly useful

If you enjoy VATS then agility so you can pick up nerves of steel and I guess endurance because more HP is never a bad thing.

Make sure you get the Endurance implant. The level of endurance decides how many implants your body can handle. E.g. 6 Endurance = 6 implants.
So the Endurance implant won't take up any space if you get what I'm saying.

Not true, unless a recent patch changed something.

I think the Lord has it. There is no free lunch, I'm afraid.

If you have ED-E for a companion you may consider shedding some of those perception points. With him and Boone I find that I sense things much further away than I am willing to go. This is particularly true for points of interest.

I am a big supporter of luck—the more the better (however I can never bring myself to support the Legion long enough to get the Lucky Shades.

He can't shed perception points for two reasons.
One better criticals requires a perception of six and it vastly increases your damage potential and two he already made the character. So he can't lose points on anything.

*here's a luckyshades trick*. Just take NCR dog tags off of NCR troopers who are already dead or pickpocket them.

I think it is along the lines of one implant for each endurance you have, but the maths doesn't quite add up. 7 special implants plus 2 other implants = 9 but I needed 10 endurance to get all of the impants on my current playthrough (or have I missed something? ). I don't know if the minimum endurance is 2 before you can start purchasing the implants and then it adds an 'implant slot' for each point in endurance you have?

I know for certain you can gain extra 'implant slots' by using the intense training perk and raising endurance (easier to achieve if you add the perk every level mod).

7 luck should be ok in the casino, it will probably take longer to clean up that's all.

its one implant per point of endurance and the endurance implant doesn't count.

What you need to do is stop picking dumb perks and get some Intense Training.

So your saying he should pick dumber perks? Beyond level 2 its a waste.

Steathy sniper with high repair, speech, science and working on upping barter. Generally good but pragmatic.

so high perception would be useful. intelligence will boost science and repair. charisma will boost barter and speech. what is your endurance?

I posted my stats a couple of posts above :)

I already have IN 8 and I don't think upping it any higher makes sense. With ED-E on board, PE higher than 6 is not really mandatory. I have enough speech to pass any speech check with a Naughty Nightwear and a skill mag, and I'm mainly upping Barter because it's just about the last useful stat I can boost. My Endurance is 5; I may or may not increase it later with Intense Training if I run out of useful perks.

Basically my question can be broken down as follows:

1) Is it worthwhile to max Luck to 10?

2) Is the Subdermal Armor implant worth getting? Furthermore, is it worth getting in lieu of an extra S.P.E.C.I.A.L implant?

3) Should I but one or two AG implants instead of LK implants?

1. There is some perk that gives you a critical amount based on +5 extra luck points. I've never gone past 7 luck with any guns related characters. Lucky Shades are also +1 luck and can be worn with pretty much any helmet that does not cover your face. You can also get the Critical Beret also in Novac which can be worn with Lucky Shades and also give a bonus to criticals.

2. A. Yes.
B. You shouldn't be getting focused on S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes all that much, I found that on my second playthrough they don't play an overly huge deciding factor unless it's some completely different build than you've wanted.

3. If you're heading for overall sneak with a sniper/guns build, then yes due to the perk that gives +5 luck point worth of criticals. I'd honestly go with 2 AGL implants over the luck implant if your luck is already at 7.

I've just bought a Luck implant, and the clinic doesn't offer me any more Luck implants. Other implants yes, Luck no. Does it mean I can only have one implant of each type, or does it mean I should come back in a few days when the clinic refreshes its supply?

I've stolen everything I could get my hands on at the Boomer base and the Silver Rush. I have 45 000 caps and I've not sold everything yet.

Thanks for the help all :) If I can only have one implant of each type, it means I can't go for 10 Luck. So I guess since I've already bought ST and LK implants and I have three more, I'm going to go with AG, Subdermal armor and EN. I don't really take a lot of damage with my tactics, but I tend to stick with the Recon armor with its +5 Sneak and modest DT, so some increase in DT and hit points won't hurt.

I know he can't lose them  I probably could have phrased it better :stare:

I never waste my perception points early in the game. Sniper doesn't become available until Level 12 and Better Criticals until 15. Keep perception at 3 or five until level 8 or 10 and then up it to get the other perks.

Is it possible to steal the Lucky Shades? If so, who has them?

Oh yeah, mental note to acquire the Naughty Nightwear earlier next time. Save me having to put on that dog-ugly suit Benny wears.

No, only 1 pair and it can be found in Legion's Safehouse which you need a "Liked" reputation with the Legion to get access to.

I bought them all. I love being that god like guy who is in good with everyone (except Powder Gangers). I feel like a Judge Dread of the Mojave.
