HELP CTD on save game but not if I start a new game

Post » Fri Aug 27, 2010 4:54 pm

So I've had a stable playing game for several months now and I went and installed Loth's Blunt weapons with OBMM. When I went to play my game would CTD when trying to load my save. So I deactivated and deleted the mod. When I went back to play my game it was still crashing. I've tried loading an outdoor save and an indoor save and the same thing happens. Can somebody help me out. Here's my load order after I deactivated the LBW mod.

This has happened to me before a couple times; once it was when I deactivated a certain mod. Do you have any saves that don't use that mod? If you don't, I'd say you're pretty well screwed - it corrupted all your saves and you'll have to start over. That's what I had to do too. :(

Before you start panicking, though... are you using Wrye Bash? If you are, where's your Bash Patch? If you don't have one, I'd try reinstalling LBW, build a patch, then make a save with it active, remove the mod, and rebuild the patch. That might get rid of the problem.

What I did was activate the mod then tried to play and it wouldn't work. So I deactivated and deleted the mod. Then went to my save that doesn't have the mod, since I couldn't get the mod to work in the first place, and it would do the same thing crash when it was loading.

I don't really use Wrye Bash since I tried to use it when I was trying to install FCOM and all the mods associated with it. I don't have a bash patch and have been able to play for several months without any problems. Only thing i use Wrye Bash for is to run BOSS. I've been mainly using OBMM to install all my mods since I find it easier to use.

Well, lets look at what happened:
You have a save without LBW.
You install LBW and try to play it but it does not work. Do you mean it would not load the save or what?
If we assume that it did load the save now with LBW but you decided to uninstall LBW.
You deactivate in OBMM. Delete the file.

So now the save you had before loading LBW crashes the game.

Only thing I can think of is when you deactivated LBW and deleted the LBW omod, some files that it overwrote were not restored or are the wrong version. How to fix this?
You can look at all the files LBW installs/replaces. Don't know how practical that is.

So have you tried reinstalling LBW and se if the save game works?

You can also reainstall your omods that have some of the files that LBW has.

Hope this helps you.

Yes it wouldn't load my non LBW save when I activated the mod.

I've tried deactivating all mods I'm running then activate them again and it still crashes with my save game, I've done it before and it worked. But like I said a new game works fine. It will svck if i have to start over but so far it looks like I might have to.

This is the first time I know of that I've activated a mod then when I deactivate and delete it I still have a problem.

Perhaps it may be worthwhile to use wrye bash to look at your save file and see what masters it has, to see if something is missing. Also, make sure you make a copy of your save before working on it. I assume you do not have any saves going back a bit, to work your way backwards?

How about if you backup your oblivion.ini file, delete original, have oblivion recreate it? If that does not help you can restore the backup.

If you deactivate mods and it still crashes then the most likely cause is a corrupt save. Look through your save files for a save around the same time if you have these.

Grasping at straws, try scandisk on your hard drive to see if there are errors and fix them. Try a defrag.

If you deleted earlier saves and did not empty recycle bin, look in there for other saves.

At this point anything is worth a try.

I'll try it as soon as I can get on my game computer. :( I'm starting to realize just how much I've done so far in my game so restarting is gonna svck.

what do I need to do to fix that? hopefully this will fix things. I've tried a force deactivate and then reactivating them. Should I try reinstalling and activating Better Cities?

YAY :celebration: I FINALLY got my game to load without having to start all over. I don't really know what all i did to fix it but this last try I deleted and reinstalled Better Cities and that seemed to fix things. I'm SOOO glad I don't have to start from the beginning since I had done a bunch of quests and was so far along with other quests. If I didn't have so much invested in this character weapon and level wise along with time i wouldn't of cared so much trying to get my save to work again.

Top notch Tatts!!! Yeah, those files are better cities files. Wrye Bash is really a nice tool. I feel as happy as you. Good gaming.

I'm not an expert, but it was probably LBW messing with Better Cities. The mod I had conflicted with Open Better Cities (after I deactivated it, I was constantly crashing when I even came near the cities) and I was forced to start a new game. Next time something like that happens, I'll just try reinstalling OBC. :)

Re: Wrye Bash: You should really try it out. It's not that hard to use the basic functions (trust me, I'm very leery of strange programs). Building a bash patch is simplicity itself - just copy the Bash Patch, 0 file over to the Data folder, run BOSS, then right-click on the patch and select "Build Patch". Once it finishes, you hit "Okay" or "Done" or whatever it is, and that's it - you're set.
