I'm working on a house interior and suddenly the cross where the cursor should be disappears and i can only select items by selecting in a box shape

I think there is a keyboard shortcut that changes your pointer so it's easy to toggle it something else.

Poke around in the Help Keyboard Commands or look on the menu bar for a way to toggle the cursor. Its much the same thing as you can do in Photoshop or GIMP.
