Help me decide Fallout 3 or NV?

Post » Tue Jul 16, 2013 3:39 am

Hello,

I know this has been done to death but Im buying one of them and I need to know what game as better:

- story

- gameplay

- feeling

- scary parts

- mechanics

Please help me out guys I must decide. To give you a quick tip, I love the Metro games very much, that dark apocalyptic survival feel to the game.

Please help!

What kinds of games do you like?

('Better' definitely means different things to different folks; the same goes for mechanics, story, gameplay, feel...)

*Unfortunately, I've not played any of the games you mention. :(

But my guess would be Fallout 3; it's probably closer to Metro; with a more immediate feel to it. NV is in an area that has recovered more, and the pacing seems a bit slower IMO.

**Also I've read that it can be awkward to return to FO3 from FO:NV, but you can always buy NV later.

IMO FO:NV is better in all respects except actual landscaping of the areas.

In a nutshell (the way I see it).

New Vegas is better on all accounts. Story is multifaceted and you are given actual choices with consequences; gameplay is more fluid; mechanics have much more meat on them, as in your character build has much more meaning than in Fallout 3; the world feels more consistent and interesting (though less random); there are enemies that can actually kill you even if you are at higher levels, so the scary parts-part is more about surviving than random spooks.

Get New Vegas.

Story- New Vegas

Gameplay- New Vegas

Feeling- depends. FO3 world is very destroyed, post apocalyptic. New Vegas world is rebuilding though much is still in ruins, post-post-apocalyptic.

Scary parts- FO3 base game has more scary/eerie imo,

Mechanics- New Vegas

If you really want that apocalypse-just-happened-feel go with FO3.

Edit: New Vegas does have survival mode(you need to eat, drink, sleep, etc.) and the damage system makes the monsters tougher to take down.

-story : either

-gameplay: new vegas

-feeling: ? new vegas

-scary parts: fallout 3

-mechanics: either

I personally like New Vegas a bit more, it is a bit more immersive, but Fallout 3 was really great because it was definitely set apart from Fallout 1 and 2 because of the setting being on the East Coast, but New Vegas is really cool because the Mojave wasn't as affected by nuclear devastation like DC was.

When it comes to DLC though, or the ultimate editions, Fallout 3 is more stable as New Vegas definitely has had a lot of problems with their DLC. The vanilla game though, I'll take FONV over FO3.

It's really a give and take on both, and imo the deciding factors would be if you plan to play the DLCs or not, and more importantly what is a better setting for you. If you want to see more active landscape in terms of nature, New Vegas is for you. Want to explore more ruins and destroyed city? Fallout 3 is the answer.

You really can't go wrong with either one. Oh, when it comes to gameplay and mechanics, I like New Vegas simply for being able to aim down the sights of a gun. Other than that, the differences are really subtle. New Vegas is a bit trickier with it's perks than FO3 because many of the perks are double edged swords type of deals, where Fallout 3 they are all positive effects.

When it comes to the main story, both games have huge differences. Fallout 3 you follow the same main quest, but you have an actual traditional alignment system of Good, Neutral, Evil. Depending on what you do will depend on the final outcome. New Vegas gets rid of this and has more of a reputation system with not only the 3 big factions of the main quest, but every town and group as well and way more in depth in that regards, but it has no alignment system because of it is recognized in New Vegas that Good, Neutral, and Evil are all matters of perspective depending on whose eyes are looking at upon you and your deeds.

If you want to get more into survival mode in post-apocalyptic city, Fallout 3 is more suited. However in New Vegas there is an actual "hardcoe" mode where your thirst, hunger, and rest are measured on a scale similar to radiation. Also nothing heals you instantly except for sleep and doctors bags, stimpacks are gradual healing over time, and also to take advantage of them you need to invest into medicine. Though you don't really need to because if you invest in survival, food that you find or make can have better results.

Fallout 3 is really good, it has a great feel for the game but when it comes to survival mode, New Vegas is better. If Fallout 3 had that hardcoe mode it would be hands down better than New Vegas in that regard because of the location of the game itself.

There is so much to elaborate on the similarities and differences with the two games, both are done well and offer their own unique experience. I could go on and on about the differences, but that would be just an incredibly long post. Though if you have a specific question, would be much easier to elaborate on something.

Get the Ultimate Edition if you can - the DLCs are great and are worth every penny.

Ultimate would be worth it, just know that it has been known to cause severe lag and framerate issues. Hope it doesn't happen to you.

Go Ultimate edition, but remember to do the DLCs in release order. They have an interconnecting story.

Order of release -

Dead Money

Honest Hearts

Old World Blues

Lonesome Road

You can play them in any order you want, though. Personally, I usually play Honest Hearts first. It's the easiest of the bunch and can be started at the lowest level.

I would save Lonesome Road for last. It's designed for a high level player and really is the capstone for the entire story arc.

Just make sure you complete all of them before finishing the main quest. New Vegas has a definite ending once you finish the main quest.

Though I do prefer FNV in every possible aspect, Fallout 3 isn't exactly a bad game either and since you didn't play its predecessors, you won't mind certain... shortcomings the game has. So if you enjoy FNV, I suggest buying F3 as well. Though I guess that would be the logical approach ^^

Though don't worry about accidentally triggering it, when the point of no return comes there will be a pop up telling you that if you continue you will not be able to return and will have to reload a save prior to entering the final battle in order to continue playing. When this pop up comes you can simply choose "no", turn around and finish whatever you want to do and leave the main quest hanging until you feel like doing the last part.

So there's no worry about accidentally triggering it.

It has lots and lots of side quests, plus four separate paths you can take to complete the main quest - you'll have to play it more than once to experience it all. A single playthrough will last well over 100 hours as long as you don't deliberately rush the main quest.
