Help, File Path Messing up!

Post » Sun Aug 14, 2011 11:15 am

I downgraded a mod from oblivion, and everything works except the file path for the texture. The file path is named:
textures/stc_ne_kunai.dds

So, I placed my texture in the textures folder as the above states, and load it up. The mesh appears normally, but without a texture. Also, my friend tested it, and it crashed his game. Can anyone help me out on to how to fix this?

you could pack the texture with the mesh in nifskope.

1, you might have to go into nifskope and manually reroute the texture path by hitting the purple texture path icon. and 2, is the dds format the right one? oblivion will accept more formats than morrowind. you can dxt3 for sure. if the problem persist then see if the texture is the right size by exporting the uv map in nifskope, and see what size it is(512x512, 256x512, etc.) hope this helps.

The problem is not that it won't load the texture at all. I can manually apply the texture and it works fine. I just want it to be able to be used in directories that are different than mine.

I already tried that, equipping the weapon kept crashing my game until I did.

It's 1024 x 1024, but the weird thing is the texture will show up in NifSkope if you apply it there. If it's too big, it won't.

1024x1024 should work fine. is the texture a dds or a tga. nifkope will show if you have it set as one and its the other. but the game itself will crash. only if the path is dds and the texture is tga. works fine the other way around, dunno why. if you haven't fixed it send me the file to look at if you want. Or PM Pluto or one of the other venerables that know more than me. and as far as different directories it should go Textures\your directory name(i usually use RTF)\texture name. when you use a sub directory you always have to start with textures\

I'm glancing it over. The files I am seeing him using is 'stc_ne_kunai.dds.dds'. So likely hidden extensions is the issue for him.

I feel like I should've checked for that. Oh well. :P

EDIT: Confirmed. Saved the texture as a .dds, eliminating the extra ".dds", set the mesh to use it, loaded up the game, equipped it, everything's A-okay.

So try to watch out for that stuff everybody. :P

Hmm when I looked at it in the editor it came up but it was rather plain looking, unfinished. But then again, it wasn't the pure white you get when the texture can't load. Don't know what to say slaanesh

Oh well. I'll just use my directory and say that people may need to redirect the filepath.

Okay, now something strange is happening. I'm using a strict file-path, and still no texture. Now I realize something else is doing this.

I'll next have to ask what OS you have and what the file permissions are (and if you are running as something like admin which can access them)

Windows 7, UAC Turned OFF, All morrowind Related files ran as Admin. I've done this plenty of times before, It's nothing like that, I'm positive.

I've barely touched 7, actually I'd prefer not to use windows at all. But Microsoft Windows has more and more been going towards being a unix/like system. It has groups, 3 sets of permissions very similar to Unix (And I'm sure their Mimix has some to do with this). I can't suggest anything except check your permissions, that all of your files and folders are at least readable by everyone. (For Morrowind at least, not sure about the rest of them).

Are you sure you aren't seeing the texture in game? If you aren't getting the great big yellow exclamation point and a warning box, the texture is being applied.

I thought the exclamation point was the mesh is missing and pure white if the texture is missing...

That's how it's been in my experience: Exclamation Point, I have a mesh missing, pure white, the texture is absent/file-path broken.

Unless I'm missing somrthing, the file path in Windows should textures\stc_ne_kunai.dds

i.e. '\' not '/'.

textures/stc_ne_kunai.dds is a Linux/Unix path.

Yep, sorry guys. My mistake. I'll chalk that up to one beer too many at that frat party in '89.

That's okay, I misspell something when doing console commands almost every time I use them (mod testing purposes only). And I don't have the excuse of ever having been drunk. For anything. :P
