Help Me Get Used to Fallout 1 and 2

So I love Fallout. I've played the everlasting hell out of New Vegas (I'm replaying it again, actually), and I just beat Fallout 3.

But I also own Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics. But I got just outside the Vault door in Fallout 1 and... Stopped playing. I just couldn't get a feel for it.

So can someone tell me how to get used to it? The style is so jarring from the Elder Scrolls/FPS style I'm used to.

Fallout 1 is actually really easy to get into. What I suggest is to actually turn down the difficultly temporarily for a start than look at guides in the beginning. Its (better) than not playing at all if it means getting into the game. This is what I did when I played it.. When I first played I was set aback.. Now, after doing what i suggested, you want to set goals.. Those goals being, Get Armour, Pick a skillset (plus get gun for that - small guns and 10mm smg), and finally get a companion. Also loot everything because its all worth something... You need every cap :D .. Shady Sands will be the first town you encounter and it could be very boring there.. If you know the history behind shady sands from Fallout New Vegas, it may be a little more appealing but I doubt it. Also, it is an RPG. You really have to get in the mindset to get the water chip. I am basically saying, force yourself to care just at the beginning.. You won't have to force youself forever because the story becomes really good.

I'll give the best piece of advice I can think of. try it out for a while, don't expect it to play or feel like New Vegas or Fallout 3. It's a different animal altogether. On the same token, do not try to force yourself to enjoy the game. If it's not for you, then it's not for you, there's nothing wrong with it. I tried forcing myself to play and enjoy it, even though I despise isometric/turn based games. It didn't work out very well, then I tried it again, and again, and again. I've finally given up on it altogether.

I disagree of course.. The game changes quickly.. So if you force yourself to get through just the beginning, it gets better from there where self-interest will guide you.. If you can get lost in story than the isometric/turn based systems just disappear.. This is what happens when you get to like the 2nd/3rd town (which happens really quickly).

Yes, this is a bit of extreme post editing, But to get my point across, you should never have to force yourself to get through anything. There's no shame in admitting that something isn't for you. Sure, try the game, play it for a while, but do not ever force yourself to do it.

If I went by that logic I wouldn't have ever read a single book in my life.. Most books don't sell me on their first 20 pages.. It takes awhile for me to like characters and really be interested in the story. I wasn't interested in Fallout 1 for about an hour of play.. After that I was really interested and played it to the end..

I guess that's just the way it goes sometimes then. I always know within the first few pages of a book whether it's going to interest me. If it doesn't grab me within the first couple pages, it'll never get read. Same thing goes with movies and video games.

To be fair, with Fallout 1, it did grab me, but like I said, I despise, and always have (even back when FO1 was still new) isometric/turn based games. I tried to force myself to play through it. I didn't work out the first time...or the second...or the third. I've now given up on ever finishing the game.

BTW: I did make it as far as Necropolis on my last attempt, but after installing the unofficial patch and losing my save game, I just couldn't force myself to go through it again.

Necropolis probably would have made you like the game.. How far into Necropolis did you get man :D ? Its seriously the turning point in which you start caring.. I hope you can experience it one day because the story is actually really good.

Maybe what could help is to focus on your character. What is your character's motivation for wanting to leave the Vault? What is s/he good at? It is a learning curve for sure, old school RPG. You can't be master of everything. You can be a jack of all trades :shrug:

If you have any experience with Pen and paper RPG then you can use that to make a character in Fallout.

If you put work into your character you might have far more motivation to move forward in the game. If you need help with making a character, there are a lot of people here who can help you with that.

TBH, I don't remember, but once I installed the patch and lost my save, it was all over. That was my final attempt at giving it a legitimate shot. I cannot put myslef through that agin.

However, this isn't my thread to hijack. OP still is looking for ideas on how to get through the game. I've given my advice. take it or leave it. I still think forcing one's self to enjoy something isn't the wisest policy, but that's just me I guess.

Its probably not just you. I just have strong opinions on the matter.. Styles gave a good idea of sorts.. Motivation is key and actually playing the character (and being the character) is vital.
