Help, re-installed windows & oblivion w/ mods

Hi,

I recently moved from 64-bit vista to 64-bit win7 (clean install). My Oblivion is heavily modded, and I didn't want to go through installing all of them all over again, so before reformatting I just copied the Oblivion directory to an external hard drive, and saved the Oblivion registry key (I've read that this should actually work). Well, you've probably guessed it ain't working :D After installing win7, I moved it back to the hard drive, ran the registry keys and windows greets me with a message that goes something like this (my OS is finnish so probably not word for word): "Application couldn't be initialized (0xc0000142)." No other option than to close the window. I've tried deactivating all mods, re-creating bashed patch and removing Oblivion.ini. I even installed oblivion from scratch and then replaced the directory with the modded one, no dice. FWIW, oblivion did start correctly as vanilla, so it's probably nothing win7 or driver related..Here's my mod order:

Any help would be much appreciated, though I'm starting to get used to the fact that I'm probably gonna have to do a lot of mod installing in the future.. And I'm such a n 0 0 b that I can't figure out how to place text in a scrollable box so I'm sorry for the long list :P

Did you sort this load order with BOSS? I know that last plugin is in the wrong place. Actually, a bunch of your plugins are in the wrong place. Fix your load order. Also, remove TIE - In and Slof's Horses Base. You need to read the MMM thread about updates. The Slof's horses piece is clear as day in the MMM opening post. Those resources are now included in MMM 3.7b3. You just need to install the Slof's Horses Complete optional module. Lastly, MMM Looting NPCs and Creatures causes instability from some, but you do not have a stable enough setup to with which you could determine whether or not it is causing problems for you. Actually, why are those random Better Cities plugins in there. Remove them. You do not have BC installed. This SHOULD NOT RUN.

Thanks for the reply. As messed up as the load order looks, I did run it perfectly fine before installing the new OS (and I did have Better Cities installed). But as I stated at my first post I tried to run the game with all mods disabled, but it wouldn't run, so it's probably not load order related. I did make the changes you suggested and sorted the list with boss but it didn't work.

Probably better not to install Vista registry entries into Win7.

Do a new install of Oblivion and Shivering Isles. Don't install to the "program files" directory. Patch it to the latest patch (if not using the GOTY edition).

Run the game at least once from the default OblivionLauncher.exe file.

After that, copy your old Oblivion directory onto the new one.

That will make sure your registry settings are correct.

What do you mean it did not work? Also, you do not have the BC Resource ESM or the rest of the main mod. The game is going to crash if you have missing masters, and that load order has plenty of them.

Edit: Once the vanilla game is working and you add that list to it again, the game is going to crash on load.

It gave me the same error as before.. I do have the BC Resource ESM, it's the 12th item (13th on the new one) on the list.

Make sure you have http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en installed.


Remove TIE In and sort your load order. The first page I linked contains a link to the BOSS download and instructions for installing it. The second page contains the instructions for running it. You should definitely follow Showler's instructions because some of the utilities are sensitive to the Win7 and Vista UAC mess as well. Also, make sure you are trying to run BOSS with the BAT file and not the EXE. You need to update MMM and FCOM. You have to completely uninstall MMM before installing MMM 3.7b3.

Probably better not to install Vista registry entries into Win7.

Do a new install of Oblivion and Shivering Isles. Don't install to the "program files" directory. Patch it to the latest patch (if not using the GOTY edition).

Run the game at least once from the default OblivionLauncher.exe file.

After that, copy your old Oblivion directory onto the new one.

That will make sure your registry settings are correct.


Actually I kinda tried that already. I installed oblivion (GOTY, I assume it's already patched?), ran the game fine (started a new game and fooled around in the prison) and replaced the folder with the old one. Result was the same.

Just out of curiousity, what folder are you installed to?

I'm curious as to whether Win7 is having issues with regard to the ownership of the files. Transferring files from one computer to another can cause issues if the old computer had security restrictions on the files.

I'm pretty sure I regenerated Oblivion.ini, but I'll give it a try when I have time. Are you sure the clean install has to be done exactly that way, I uninstalled Oblivion from the programs list and deleted all registry entries manually. I've always installed Oblivion to another drive than C:.

you are running as an administrator right?
installing to another drive is the same as NOT installing to program files, so that should be ok.

You stated you uninstalled it, did you also manually delete the left over files? the save game folders, the obliv file for where you installed it?
this is for just the vanilla install.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I removed everything possible. I've got administrator rights and UAC is disabled. Maybe some files were corrupted during the transfer or something..wish these error messages were a bit more informative.. :rolleyes:

after the full clean and reinstall, it still wont run just vanilla?

only thing I can suggest is to run the latest vanilla patch, just in case.

No, vanilla runs fine. After replacing the vanilla folder with the modded one is when the problems start.

Your mod list is incorrect. Have you made any of the changes I suggested? Is BOSS working now?

Edit: You should also have many of those FCOM plugin pseudo-activated (merged into the bashed patch and unchecked.) Do you have the latest version of Wrye Bash (v282)?

Whoa, I got it working, kind of. I've got a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card with the ALchemy software. I disabled Oblivion from the list and voila! But it still isn't all nice and good, because there's a good bunch of textures missing and replaced by pretty purple pixel porridge. For example the trees' trunks are ok, but the treetops where you should see the leaves, are not. I'll post pics later on, if you want, but first I'll get some sleep.. I reckon this might have something to do with OBMM not recognizing texture mods properly (I've used it to install the majority of my mods, before I started to use WB). Tomlong, I got the newest masterlist for BOSS and ran it, also merged the mods that were marked as green. How does it look now (the last 5 of them BOSS didn't recognize so they're last)? It is looking better, but you need to do something about those mods that were left at the bottom after streamline. The BOSS Log should have them listed under unrecognized mods. Get rid of the animals mod because FCOM takes care of that. Install MMM's More Passive Wildlife optional plugin instead. I do not know what those other plugins do, so get rid of those last three for now. Get rid of that no persistent glow fix, and use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5138instead. It is compatible with FCOM/OOO. Remove DLT Weight because it is probably not compatible with OOO. Get rid of Hrmn's Script Optimization because it is buggy and does not actually do much of anything to help performance. Use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16704 to identify the owners of the missing meshes and correct your installation of the relevant mod.
