Help! An intro to modding

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:59 am

The process of modding out Oblivion was pretty tough, but totally worth it. It became an entirely different game, much harder and more realistic. Basically, it went from Paint Your Wagon to Pulp Fiction. :flamethrower:

Anyway, I want to do the same thing to Fallout 3.

In Oblivion, it took quite a bit of confusing hard work to get all the incredible overhaul mods (MMM, OOO for example) to work in conjunction with each other - or, at least, to discover the proper versions of the programs I needed (like Wrye Bash, BOSS, etc.). So what I'm wondering is this: I understand there's a Bash equivalent and some great overhaul mods for Fallout 3 out there. Could anyone be kind enough to link the programs I need to mod, and walk me through getting started here?

3 important utilities are: FO3Edit for anolyzing conflicts and creating merged patches, FOMM for creating FOMMODs to easily in/uninstall, and BOSS for sorting, all of which can be found on the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/. This will do well for light to moderate mod application. If you want to use many mods, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11336 will help, but is not necessary as WryeBash is with OB. Installation for the first 3 are easy enough- remember what readmes are for! :read: ... and if your familiar with WryeBash, Flash should be quite similar. I've gotten by without out Flash so all I can say is :read: !

I heartily recommend MMM (second M is for Mutant), WMK (Weapon Mod Kits) and FWE (FalloutWanderersEdition) as a base for transforming FO3... but there are other alternatives, though not as many as there are for OB.

Be sure to take a glance at the pinned Fallout 3 Mods FAQ thread.
