Help making really simple mod?

Post » Sun Mar 28, 2010 2:39 am

I was advised to post a request here to see if someone would pick it up. I was wondering if I could get a tweak so that I'm addressed by my name or class and not my race? I'm RPing my modded character to be in hiding and if everyone recognizes me for what I am, it really nulls the effect.

I was told this was easy, but I'm no modder. Can anyone help?

I can think of 2 ways to manage this: Change your race name in the CS, or Change every %pcrace to %pcname or %pcclass in the dialog of all NPC's.

Changing the Race name would be the easier way i think, but a bit messier. You'd have to copy all the normal race information to a new race named more appropriately, and then restart and select that new race.

Perhaps someone may have a better way, these are just what i can think of.

That would be the only way to do this. The problem with changing the dialog variables is tracking them all down to change them.

I've thought a few times that it doesn't seem very realistic that when you greet someone and they say "What do you do?" You say, "Oh, I'm an assassin.", or "I'm a thief". If everyone knows what your class is, that's kind of what it boils down to.

So I guess its not that easy. I was thinking of the Disguise Mod and wondered if there wasn't a way to become unrecognizable.

So there is no way for someone to actually make a mod I can install? I really don't want to mess with the CS. I still have mods that I want to install but it keeps screwing up!!!

It's not that there is no way, but rather that it's much more difficult and time-consuming than you would think at first glance.

EDIT: I'm not sure I understand how your race is a dead give-away to your identity... I would think class would be more of a problem.

If you are requesting a mod i strongly suggest you provide the race you are and the preferred name for it, it is entirely impossible to make a mod without knowing what you're making. Making the mod wouldn't really be that time consuming, it's copy and paste work, and it doesn't sound like there is a ton of interest in a public release, so it'd just be for you.

I don't see how changing the race name really helps in any case. To make it work, he would have to actually become this new race... He's not RaceX disguised as RaceY, he really is RaceY. That's kind of like saying "You're no longer american, you're a Yank." or "You're no longer a brit, you're a limey." and expecting there to any real difference other than a different word to describe the same thing.

Aside from that, if this is a mod, and it's such a special race that it's nature must be hidden, it's very likely that there is race-filtered dialogue for quests to consider and possible scripts as well, no?

In fact, both options proposed by Artimis Fowl the 3rd is not too difficult to do. (I can try) But will probably be some glitches.

Ew, why is it assumed Whisper is a 'he'? I'm a girl. I had a rockin avatar up but the new formatting did away with it and I'm not sure how to get it back!

As for the race, I'm a Meadow Fae (Korana) and the reason I don't want the race known is that the mod only modded in three characters including my own. I am roleplaying that Morrowind was originally inhabited by Meadow Fae long before any other races and they were hunted to extinction. They are now in the realm of myth and I keep my character covered and hidden when among other people.

So, it doesn't matter if the wings are hidden if people still address me as "Meadow Fae", and it really ruins the whole story I have playing in my head about my character! Kind of trivial, but I'm a purist!

Thanks for trying to help though!

Yeah the lack of avatars stinks. I miss my old one :( Yeah, and I can feel your pain. That's the reason why I tend to avoid custom races that don't fit in to lore at all.

Sorry for the gender misidentification, there is no intention of such but "he" is the general default used unless one wants to go with the he/she him/her. No offense intended.

I thought Alan Brank was going to work on this for you.... have you heard from him?

I don't think so, because I offered to help but in this topic. :)
Also I need more information.

How about a script to change class/name into something like "stranger" when you are in disguise?

Oh no worries guys, I'm not offended.

I don't know how I would want to be addressed. Stranger wouldn't work because after they are friends it would be weird. I was thinking they could just address me as "Wanderer" or "Whisper". Would that work? Tell me what all you need to know because I have no idea at all what is involved here.

Thanks for wanting to help. You guys are so cool! I can't believe anyone would even want to bother with something this silly. *S*

I just wanted to see how well one can actually mod without using the CS or MWEdit... Try the result: http://www.mediafire.com/?zthyfguhqzj. I haven't tested it, but it should work. With this file, you'll be addressed as %PCClass rather than %PCRace. It only addresses Morrowind's dialogue, Tribunal and Bloodmoon are not covered.

[...]The problem with changing the dialog variables is tracking them all down to change them.

Not really. Just make a copy of morrowind.esm, export its dialogue, exchange %PCRace for %PCClass (only 114 instances in morrowind.esm), run it through TESTool, clean out Cells, Land Textures, and GMSTs with TESAME, and then clean the rest of it with the Enchanted Editor, Wrye Mash, and a text editor. Takes about 90 minutes.

Edit: punctuation

Welll... dang! if I'd known it was that simple, I'd have done it twice... :)

Now if only I had the faintest clue about how to export dialogue from the Morrowind esm without using the construction set, I'd be on my way. It's good to discover that there are people around who do know how to do that sort of thing, eh? :)

The answer to this question is http://wryemusings.com/#WryeMash. It's an invaluable tool for many occasions. Get it if you don't already have it. :)

I've downloaded it a couple of times, but I've never been able to get it to work. I have multiple drives, and multiple installations of Morrowind, none of which are currently on C: and I cannot seem to successfully edit the path for python.

People here, particularly in the MW forums, tend to like helping out; especially if a person is not demanding and the project is small enough to be a feasible goal. The bottom line is that we like mods/modding and will usually do it if we have the time, the person is respectful, and everything has been thought out enough.

I don't know a lot about scripting personally, but seeing this, is it possible to create it and release it with a readme detailing how to change the class and race to whatever a person wanted? If that could be done, it would be of use to even more role players.

Try using Yacoby's http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1051299-wrye-mash-launcher/.

Yes, that's possible, but not today. Today, I have forced myself to finally begin with fixing/updating http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/843827-relz-ushindra-beach/, and I'm going to get something done: I have been slacking on it for far too long.
On this little mod: it's an easy but tedious task. Without having actually looked at how much needs to be done about Tribunal's and Bloodmoon's dialogue, I estimate it'll take another 6 to 8 hours. I'll save that up for a grey and rainy day, so if anybody else wants to have a go at it, by all means, do it.

BHL, thank you so much for your help! I can't wait to try this. I will be testing this out today and I will let you know! THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! *dance dance*

I have a question for you. Is there any way it can be done with Bloodmoon and Tribunal or is it only possible to make this mod with vanilla Morrowind? I'm running a lot of mods like Tamriel Rebuilt, MCA and a few others that add NPCs. Is there some way I can Mesh or Mash or Merge (whatever its called!) so that it covers everything?

I will try it and let you know! Thanks a million.

Of course, there's a way to extend this mod to Bloodmoon's and Tribunal's dialogue; I just didn't feel like doing it on monday. I actually have those extensions sitting on my hard drive right now (didn't have anything better to do this eveninig). I'll combine them with the Morrowind file, add a readme on how to change them, and upload them when I find the time.
Well, Maholix expressed his wish to see this mod being extended to optionally change all instances of %PCClass. Would you require this option as well?

Edit: The readme file is done.

I would love that! I don't want to be recognized as a Meadow Fae at all. I've been playing your mod and I'm not noticing any changes yet. Did you have people call me Whisper, or Wanderer? No one has called me Wanderer yet. I'll keep playing, I didn't get enough time. This is going to be so great!
