It depends on how far the point you want to put the item is away from the player. If you just stand in the middle of a room or outside there is a relatively small radius where yuo can place items. If you don't look down, you might not be able to place the items within that radius at all. If there is a table or something else in front of you that you can put items on, this should be easier. But your cursor actually tells you whether you can place an item at the current location of the cursor, and it automatically switches to the "drop" cursor if it is over a spot where an item cannot be placed: If you see the normal cursor, the item can be placed in this spot, if not, it becomes a cursor pointed down to a horizontal line. Then the item gets dropped at your feet.
