Help me out here

I know that this may seem like a stupid question to some but I would like your opinion. So I have been saving and have about $2500 spare, now I've always been a console person with the 360 but My friends all have High end gaming rigs and have voiced there opinions numerous times how much pc games look better compared to consoles. Heres my dilemma I either buy a High end rig or spend the money on a new LED tv because i figured it should look better on the tv right because your a further distance away?

Here's the real question: Do you want MODS or not?

Well I'm open to the idea but first comes visual quality :)

The PC version will come with higher res textures and AA, which the 360 will not have. Being closer also allows you to see more detail.

LED tvs are not really worth it honestly, until they can actually make affordable OLED tvs. Right now "LED tv" just mean LCD tv with LED backlight. If you bought a $2000 dollar rig with a decent $300 monitor the game will look better than Xbox, without a doubt. $2000 will actually be pretty overkill for this game, you could easily build a $1000 pc that will probably be able to play it well. The Xbox will render the game at a resolution of 1280x720 at best, with no or little anti aliasing and lower resolution textures, whereas a nice PC will be 1920x1080 (1920x1200 is dying sadly), 4-8x AA and better textures. And if you really wanted to you could plug your computer into an hdtv and use a controller (360, ps3, 3rd party gamepad).

But anyway, you don't want to miss out on the mods for this game. Also there will eventually be mods that improve the graphics such as ridiculously high resolution texture packs.

Not sure about the LED tv, but with 2500$ you can buy a real monster of PC. Visual quality will be better on PC. The only thing you should consider in favor of console, is that you are used to this form of gameplay, and may find yourself unconfortable playing on PC, though I think you can find console controlers for PC.

Both ways, you will be able to have better visuals than now, the real advantage of console is the chance of playing with someone else in the same room.

Sure, it makes things less noticeable. One of the reasons that PC version often ship with higher res textures is not just because they can handle them, it's also because details matter more up close.

Ever hear people complain about the Oblivion UI on the PC? The heart of the problem is that it was designed to be seen from a distance, on a TV, but up close on a monitor it was oversized and clunky.

Yeah, being farther away from the screen doesn't improve the graphics at all, it just makes the low resolution rendering, low resolution textures, and lack of anti aliasing harder (not impossible) to notice.

But the fact is there's not much stopping you from connecting a modern video card into an hdtv other than the size and location of your computer. Whether you go ati or nvidia, their high end cards all have hdmi ports.

Go PC. You can hook it up to your TV if you want to, with 2500 you can build a pristine computer. I would wait until late summer/fall because AMD is releasing new processors so you can either get the best of the best or get a really good AM3 processor for a lot less than they are now. And if you care about graphics, there are a lot of mods just for those. Take a look at some of the high rated graphics mods for Oblivion (sort by endorsemants in descending order to see the best stuff first):

These are only mods in the Environment section but you can see there are a lot of mods that make an average looking game a very pretty game.

Trust me, whatever Bethesda does with Skyrim, people will find ways to make it better, and release them as mods. For an Oblivion example, look into the Unique Landscape mods or the Better Cities mod.

Do your research and decide whats best for you. While some opinions on here will be helpful, some, won't. It's alot of money to spend. A PC would be better if you want better graphics, mods etc,but PC gaming isn't always a bed of roses, you can have problems or alot of frustation with it,but when everything works fine,it is in my opinion the better experience. I used to play games on PC a long time ago,but i'm happy with my 360. Just because i have a 360 though, doesn't mean i should tell you to spend money on that and then get a great TV for it,it's alot of hard earned cash.Do your research and look at the pro's and cons of each. You need to know the up and down sides of each platform. People saying buy this because i think it's better because they are defending their choice is not good advice. Not everyone will do that here though, but some will. I would feel a little guilty giving advice like that, when that much money is involved.

Like i said look at all your options and take it from there.

I would be tempted to buy a PC with that money. But like i said, PC gaming can require alot of patience sometimes, and you will get conflicts or problems somewhere along the lines. If you are comfortable with using PC's and have patience when needed it could be a better choice, but that depends on you. PC user's on this forum should give honest advice, both the positives and negatives of PC gaming. All in all, look into it properly, don't just go of this forum alone. That's my advice. :)

It depends on the max resolution of the TV, but also of the source from the Console/PC. A large screen low res TV lets you see the pixels (and that's no fun).

The PC version (as I understand it) has the largest texture art that they make for the game; (Or at least I think it was this way with New Vegas).
The models are shown at higher levels of detail, so if the output of the Console and the PC were compared on a hi-res screen, the one with the highest res output and textures would generally have less pixelation ~and usually look better. PC hardware generally has higher res graphics modes than consoles. And they benefit from them if they are fast enough to use them.

Spend 1,000 on a decent rig and then the rest on a new tv.

Plug the pc into the tv and purchase a 360 controller adapter.

Best of both worlds!

It warms my heart to see so many recomendations in favour of the PC. Maybe theres hope after all, and that the future of gaming is still firmly in the grasp of the PC, not the consoles.

This is good advice and something I didn't really think much of. I built my first high end PC about 8-9 years ago for Morrowind (radeon 9700 pro ftw). I've definitely had my fair share of problems, but overall I've had a positive experience with PC gaming since then. What I can say is that I have had very minimal conflict and driver issues with my newest gaming PC, running windows 7 and playing everything from Diablo 2 to Morrowind (w/ Morrowind Overhaul) to Crysis.

Good google skills and a bit of patience help A LOT. As do friends who are PC gamers.

Thats not the point, the point is no matter what platform or grasp,we all get to play these great games, especially elder scrolls. And the OP is asking for advice and help...and we should be honest about that advice, and not cloud that by biased opinion. The last thing he/she needs is ill advice, when such an amount of money is on the table. Anyway i've already given my opinion in my previous post.
We need to get over the console v's console or console v's PC rubbish,it's not good for anyone. Having 3 major platforms is beneficial to everyone in the end, gamers and the games companies alike. The future of gaming will takes it's own course, and we'll have to accept it either way. :)

Just wait. Right now a solid 3-4 foot diag led tv can be had for 800 bucks and that will go down. As for the pc that also can be had for 1500 or less so... just wait and then you might get both.

I'm mainly a console player, but you should get the PC, that's what I'd would have bought.

This leaves me with a bitter aftertaste, after having recommended him. I had hoped that people will care more about gaming, than where it is done.
