We don't know.

It might be 200 years after, or it might retcon The Infernal City and be a direct sequel. It'll probably be one of the first pieces of official information released in the coming weeks.

It's what a preview for the book you haven't read said before it was mysteriously retracted from the website it was posted on.

How do you know I didn't read the book?! Are you stalking me?! Just kidding... I read half of it, though...

Sorry, I thought you were quoting me for some reason. :bonk:

I think like six years.

Arena was only like 40 years before Oblivion. 200 years is a damn long time.

How would it being a direct sequel retcon The Infernal City? I seem to remember hearing that Beth had already fleshed out what they wanted to happen, and the author just made a story inside of the lore they had already planned.

There are a few possibilities:

1. It takes place after Oblivion, but before The Infernal City, meaning it would be before ~4E 40

2. It takes place at some point after the unreleased second novel.

3. It takes place 200 years after Oblivion like the rumor that's been floating around since the novel was announced says.

Personally I hope it takes place 200 years after Oblivion as that would mean we'd get a hell of a lot of new lore to talk about.

I agree.

Not only would be get more Lore, but you could make changes to lands, races, abilities, ect. And it would all be feasible and explainable.

200 years sounds good, but either way, I trust Beth.

Yes, sorry if I was not clear, the preview that was posted and removed of The Infernal City is by no means official.

I'm kind of apprehensive about the 200 year thing. Think about it - 200 years ago today was December 12, 1810. That's before the US Civil War, and only about thirty years after the American Revolution. The very first and very primitive airplane was built in 1803. A lot of things change in the span of 200 years. I wouldn't mind TESV taking place 200 years after Oblivion, but I just really hope Beth doesn't see that as an excuse to include things like guns, etc.

Do you think if we all posted the question "Can you tell us why all those book retailers said the next game will take place 200 years after Oblivion now that Skyrim's been announced?" in the podcast thread it'd get answered?

Yeah, but, you have to realize, the Elder Scrolls universe requires almost no technological advancement. Face it, almost everything we can do right now with modern technology is possible in the Elder Scrolls universe with magic. Everything that applies to real life AND the Elder Scrolls universe, that is.

Hm.. So what you're saying is, if they were going to go that route, they would have already done it? I guess that makes sense.. I sure hope you're right.

Me too. That would make it 600 years since Akaviri dragons were supposedly wiped out in a war between the Tiger and Snake people. 600 years makes the idea of dragons (almost extinct and hidden as opposed to entirely extinct) repopulating themselves, or stories of previously unknown hibernating dragons being uncovered in Tamriel more beleivable. It would also make the idea of the once weakened and conflicting 4 Akaviri Empires/Races being able to invade Skyrim again (they invaded it before and it is the most referenced invasion in the games). With that much time it would even be beleivable that 200 years after Oblivion the Akaviri had managed to gain a foothold in Morrowind (yeah the closest province to invade) and had been barely stopped from pressing further by a now much weaker Empire. The Empire has been in decline for quite some time, but I don't think anyone would imagine invading Morrowind would be an easy task if Imperial and Dunmer forces were wholly united against them.

That would make sense with the narration of the preview too- their advance halted but their foothold not pushed back to the Sea would be a temporary victory. The Akavir awakening slumbering Tamrielic dragons, breeding and bringing over Akaviri dragons (the snake people had enslaved reds in the past and the tigers had fought alongside black dragons), or finding a way to produce a large number of ascended dragons (least likely) would certainly change the stalemate. They would also know to fear the Legacy of the Imperial covenant and bloodline though.
