Help me run Arena w/o DOSBox OR VDM!

Post » Sun Mar 14, 2010 10:48 pm

I have still problem with EMS memory.
After I run A.exe, message says "Not enough EMS...."

In memory tab, it is set to auto.

When I try to run mem.exe (with EMS set to auto in memory tab of mem.pif), it returns 0 EMS free.
If I try to load normal emm386.exe into memory,
message says "Emm386 not installed. Protected mode software already running."

It seems, that there is no way, how to enable EMS memory.

I guess, if it is not due to dualchannel RAM. Because, when I try to load emm386 under win98, with RAM switch, it returns some error, but when I try to load it with NOEMS switch, it works. I have dualchannel RAM. Cannot be that problem, why someone cannot enable EMS?

Thanks for the bump.  I couldn't find this thread until yesterday, and last night got the game to work flawlessly.  Thanks to everyone for all the tips and to the OP for the great thread.  I now have both Arena and Daggerfall working great on my XP PC.  Groovy!!

I did get Arena to work using this method - I made the changes to A.exe then load it with Arena.bat. no lag and full sound! Kind of fast though....
Did this work for Daggerfall? I still run Dagger with DosBox and it is laggy, even though the new CVS version of DosBox is way improved....

Minus key slows it down.

I tried it for Daggerfall once, as did several others, and it didn't seem to work for anyone.

Next, go to the folder where you store Arena, and right-click on A.EXE. In the Compatibility tab, set it to "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 95". Next, go to the Memory tab, and set everything to "Auto". Now, Program tab and click "Advanced...". This hsould bring you to a menu where you can manually set the AUTOEXEC and CONFIG files for the game. If you unzipped the file above to drive c:, you should type in C:\DOS\AUTOEXEC.BAT next to where it says "Autoexec filename:", and type C:\DOS\CONFIG.SYS next to where it says "Config filename:".

I don't have a memory tab or a programs tab. That's as far as I got.

EDIT: I don't see where to download all the files with the game ready.

Right-click A.exe in the Arena folder to open the context menu.
Select 'Properties'. There you see tabs for memory, program etc.

Look into the Arena folder. Since you're already playing the game, it must exist.
Inside this folder you'll find a file A.exe.

okay, i have heard other people mention this problem before but none of their responses made any sense in my situation. yes i have read all 7 pages and no, it still does not work. i have already disabled all sound and set the memory to auto, and followed all of the first posters instructions. before, i had the mouse not moving at the menu screens problems. i followed the instructions given. YAY! it works! or so i thought. . . . i can now het past the charecter creation screen, but right after that dream sequence thing with the blue lady, my screen just goes black. when i try using VDMS, the mouse still doesnt work. when i use the arena.bat, a black screen comes up and then just disapears. WHAT CAN I DO????

oh, and i have windows 2000. i hope thats not the problem.....

Now on to the hard part: the mouse.  The best way to do this is to go into C:\DOS\, right-click on AUTOEXEC.BAT, click Edit, and add the line

LH C:\DOS\MOUSECTL.COM 4,5,6,7,9,10,11,12

at the bottom.  Now, the mouse should work in all of the menus.

This should work not only for Arena, but for most other DOS games as well.  It's also rather convenient, as it doesn't need any foreign programs to let it run (all the stuff in the download are files from ordinary DOS).  Enjoy :D!

I don't see Edit. I also don't know how to enter the game except for using dosbox.

Damn straight :).

Check your sound settings - the Black Screen of Death is usually caused by incorrect values in sound setup.

Guys, just get D-Fend v2, and enable 20000 CPU cycles and autolock mouse. Simple as that.

Not always an option. My machine is too slow to run Arena in DOSBox at an even remotely acceptable rate (which is actually why I went through the trouble of setting up this thread).

Agreed...I've tried both methods and I found this method to be far better than any other (including DosBox) both in preformance and ease of use.

Have you tried launching the game from a batch file containing the sound settings? A bit like that:

@A -sa:220 -si:5 -sd:1 -ma:330 -mq:2 -md:1 -ssbpdig.adv -mgenmidi.adv

If that doesn't work, try to change "-si:5" to "-si:7". That's the sound emulation IRQ.

EDIT: Post deleted, because I'm an idiot, and I responded to a very old post. (For some reason I didn't notice the date stamps on the posts, or that there were more pages to the thread...) I apparently need more caffine, as I'm still asleep.

I've got everything to work except the sound, I have the music and the mouse works perfect. I've put this into the arena.bat file which got me the music but no sound,

@A -sa:220 -si:7 -sd:1 -ma:330 -mq:2 -md:1 -ssbpdig.adv -mgenmidi.adv

Any ideas on the sound?

C:\DOS|AUTOEXEC.BAT. the system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and micorsoft windows applications. Choose Close to terminate the application
