TV Help

Took a lot of time, but I'm pleased with how the renovation to the new room turned out. I'm scraping my coins together to get a nice TV. Like to spend $2.5k on a new computer, but that's not happening for another 2 or 3 years. Anyways, I need to know why type of TV some of you would recommend.

In terms of Distance, I'm probably looking at 9' maybe 10' since the room is 14 L x 11 W. I don't want some monstrous 70 to 90 " 4k Ultra HDTV. Don't have the money for it and that isn't my preference. I figure a nice 47 to 55" TV would suffice. I'd like to find a way to do a wireless TV setup with either my computer or some kind of wireless HDTV transmitter if possible. I'll also be hooking up some game consoles with my PS3 acting like a Blu-Ray player for some things.

Anyways, I'm open to suggestions here. Price range, I would say $750 would be the absolute max amount I'd be willing to spend. I'd like it to come with a couple HDMI ports so I can hook up my gaming laptop.

Well, there are 2 main types of flatscreens. The more popular LCD/LED and my preference, the Plasma. Plasmas tend to run cheaper and I prefer them for their superior black contrast and darker darks.

Just looked over at Wal-Mart's page and they have some nice 50-55" smart TVs for $700 or less.

Be careful with Vizios. Some have problems with input lag while gaming. Even the game mode with the video settings doesn't do much help.

Or as Ashens would have put it; those weren′t the days

My brother has a huge flatscreen and I think it′s rather uncomfortable to watch anything on it. The picture is way too clear/sharp and waaay too big.

Don't forget about OLED, which will likely replace LCD/LED (it bugs me that they call these "LED" TVs) and plasma (not many of these made anymore) eventually. If you haven't seen one of these, walk into a Best Buy or similar and check them out. You won't want any other kind of TV. :P They're also still pretty expensive right now. They'll certainly get cheaper eventually. I've been considering a new TV for my theater in the basemant rec room, but I've been wrestling with getting one soon-ish or waiting a couple of years for OLED units to get cheaper.

The blue pixels still wear faster than the others, but manufacturers have workarounds for this. For example, Samsung just uses a larger pixel element for the blue pixels and runs less voltage through them. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to wait on OLED for the technology to mature a bit more, though. Maybe they'll be able to find a real, standard solution for the issue soon. Seems like once a technology becomes mainstream, it starts to improve pretty quickly.

Ok all, thanks for the help on the TV front. Money is really tight right now, due to unfortunate circumstances. :(

Anyways, I need help with the topic of 1080p vs 4k UHDTV. I feel like I'm getting conflicting messages about these TVs. The price is a major sticking point, but I'm also hearing that you need to sit close, I'm talking real close to 4K TVs. From what I'm seeing, I'll need to aim for a 50" TV because they're about 44" in width. The TV will look just plain ugly if I get a 55" TV cause it'll be 48" width.

Last question I have is about refresh rate. Is 60 ok or should I aim for 120?

This is the question I find myself asking when I hear 4K resolution:

Is there anything that actually uses 4K?

Most TV signals are broadcast at 1080. There may be some movies, but isn't most Blu-Ray at 1080, also?

I do not know, so that is why I ask :)

Someone I know bought a 4K TV recently and it upscales 720p and 1080p content making it look much better. Even standard DVD's are improved. He can't watch any 4K broadcasts though as his internet isn't fast enough. Games look terrific at full resolution but he rarely uses it even for that as his single 980Ti won't run the most demanding at 60fps.

@PredatorX I didn't have to sit really close to it to see a big difference in sharpness and my eyes are pretty crap. Obviously the closer you are the more detail is apparent but it looked pretty cool from about 9 feet away.
