Help me understand ping vs. screen delay

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:19 am

Hi everyone,

I'm a non-techie and am trying to understand how my ping rate relates to screen delay.

I posted elsewhere that I get my internet through a 3G cell phone (I live in the boonies and don't get Cable or DSL). I've been running some tests and the results have averaged around 125ms or so. How does that compare to what most people with Cable see?

More importantly, what does that mean as far a lag and what I see on my screen compared to an opponent with a better ping? Am I merely milliseconds behind an opponent or more? After watching killcams, it seems like I'm anywhere to 1/2 sec to 1 second behind and it's frustrating beyond words!

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

125 ms means you are delayed by 1,25 seconds.

Yeah, except ms is 1/1000 second.

Other than that, C2's ping display makes no sense. I'm having laggy games at <50 ping and decent games at 200+. So you have to pretty much estimate it yourself.

It makes sense, its just that this game gives laggers the advantage compared to people with acceptable pings.

I think I've got about 1 second of lag. There was a verbal and visual countdown between one of my games and the visual countdown was about 1 second or so behind the verbal countdown. Very disappointing!
