Help with 4gb patch

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:22 am

Hi all,

I used to play Oblivion way way long ago. I was excited to Skyrim so I bough Oblivion figuring that I would heavily patch it as show at: http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/p/oblivion-modding-guide.html. I was following the directions but the game kept crashing after trying to install FCOM, so I uninstalled oblivion and as many of the files as I could remember. I then deleted what was left of the oblivion folder and restarted.

I started with a fresh install of Oblivion and then tried to once again apply the 4gb patch. This time however it says that it can't open the executable. I am extremely frustrated at this point. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the Game of the Year version? If so, that is already patched in official sense, so that is a good start. Whether it is already patched, or you apply the official patch (SI or non-SI, depending on whether you have Shivering Isles installed) yourself, all you need do to "patch" the Oblivion executable in this way is cut and paste it into the directory that contains the 4gb_patch.exe file, run that patch file, choose Oblivion.exe from the same directory it is in, then cut the patched version and the backup (Oblivion.exe.backup) and paste both of them into your main Oblivion install directory. Where you got Oblivion.exe from to begin with, in other words.

Once you have done this, try running Oblivion. It should run without a hitch, and from now on, you need not bother with modifying that executable at all.

I am using the 5 year anniversary set. Which is basically the GOTY addition. The issue is when I run the 4gb_patch.exe file it comes up with an error now saying "Couldn't open executable!". The first time I did it before I blew it all up to start over was "Patch successful".
