help with pc crash/hang, hdd/mobo or virus/spyware?

Post » Fri Jun 28, 2013 4:21 pm

bah ive been having random hang/crash issue on my pc for past ~5 days.. n looks like i'll have to format/reinstall win7 :(
i should be able to find out the cause once i format/reinstall, but i find this bit weird so wondering if anyone had similar issue etc.

i use 2tb seagate(model: ST2000DM001-9YN164) for c drive n its about year old, anyone know if this particular model has high failure rate? cos it seem to run hotter than 3tb seagate n other 2tb seagate..

my mobo is Gigabyte Z77X-D3H, anyone heard of sata port issue on this mobo? or z77 chipset in general?
(thought ill ask cos p67 chipset had high sata failure rate iirc)

also i run kaspersky internet security 2012, but i guess its still possible that my pc is infected with virus or spyware. this is screenshots of my windows task manager without kaspersky running.

atm im backin up data on c drive so i can format/reinstall win7 but this is really annoying cos i cant even play c3 qq :(

Is your computer overheating? A fan might have failed, or your computer may be clogged with dust. Open up the case and clean it out, a can of pressurised air is recommended. Make sure to check the seating of the GPU and Memory.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security myself, and have been using Kaspersky products for well over five years, as long as its running at recommended settings or higher, and set to automatically update, you should be fine. Also, Kaspersky offers free upgrades to major versions when a new version is released. You can update to KIS 2013 just by visiting here: http://www.kaspersky.com/au/internet-security-latest-versions Download + Install, it will automatically detect your license, and the update should be smooth.

Well "random hang/crash issue" doesn't say much...

cool thanks, didn't know u can update kis 2012 to 2013, mine only has 66 days remaining on license tho :)
one thing i don't like about kis, it seem to update the virus database daily, is that really necessary?

already opened case for cable, fan, dust etc but all seem fine. im suspecting hdd cos got read error after hang/restart n also c drive doesn't get detected in bios when pc hangs(if i just press reset), unless i power down n restart properly.

anyway, im bout to format/reinstall win7 on c drive, but don't really want to download c3 again..
copied "origin"(145mb) and "origin games"(14.2gb, c3 is the only origin game i have installed) folders to e drive, do i need to copy anything else?

bah now i'm 90% sure c drive is faulty >< (unless the hdd controller or sata port on mobo is faulty)

tried to reinstall win7 but took ages n hanged at start part.. ("where do you want to install Windows?")
i've installed win7 many times n never had similar issue..

fking seagate.. i'll never buy another seagate hdd, n i probably bought ~10 seagate hdds(inc ext ones) in past few years cos didnt like the casing on wd ext hdds. but i'm only gonna buy wd hdds from now.

update: umm, was able to reinstall win7 without any issue on 3rd try..

I have 3 Velociraptor WD1000DHTZ ( http://www.wdc.com/it/products/catalog/default.aspx?segment=1#jump2 ) and work perfect . Personaly i reccomand them. Think on one of them i reccord all my plays and i get like 300gb of video every week , videos that i sort and cancell what i dont need every single monday. Its a hard work for a hdd but WD its keeping his good name ;)

Did u check if problems are not coming from antivirus ? McAfee bring a solution for his software :

so far 0 issue since i reinstalled win7. except minor one, i only had c drive n dvdrw connected to the mobo at first but for some weird reason dvdrw didnt show up in my computer until i went in to device manager n checked. even the autorun from mobo driver cd didnt start until i checked the dvd in device manager.

im gonna run hd tune 2.55 error scan b4 i go sleep, n hopefully it was somekind of software issue cos dont really want waste money on new hdd.

luckily i was able to restore origin and crysis 3 without downloading it again, method i used:
1. copy 3 directories to other drive before win7 installation.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin (145mb)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games (14.2gb)
C:\Users\xxx\Saved Games\Crysis 3 (100mb)
2. copy em back to c drive after win7 installation.
3. run Origin.exe (n create shortcut on desktop)
4. click Crysis 3 in Origin, n select "download" option. (cos "play" option wont be avail)
5. cancel the download (i had to do it manually using windows task manager cos it wouldnt let me cancel)
6. after that "play" option should be available when u click Crysis 3 in Origin.
(but i had to copy the 14.2gb Origin Games directory to c drive again, cos i think some files got corrupted due to download n/or manual cancellation)

bah my pc just got bsod.. n after that c drive wouldnt even show up in bios until i power off the system n turned it back on. (identical problem i had before i installed win7)
so looks like i have faulty hdd or maybe faulty sata port. :(
my pc def isn't overheating n everything is connected properly..

did you got blue screen error message ? what was in message ?

ST2000DM001 7200-12model I have the same one ;D no problems for me, recording to avi, just a little bottleneck but 10min=25GB, I would compare Seagte to Mercedes n WesternDigital to ?koda - thats the quality of this Japan tech hdd brand, btw wait for HD Tune result..

I have tha kaspersky 3y AAA product it save my ass xDDD
but if u think its virus go search for hijack forums, they are IT specialist to hunt viruses - they will check ur pc for free

also update latest motherboard bios ;D

not sure, cos i was gonna take photo but bsod only stayed ~5secs n then auto restart..

i know seagate 7200.11 models had high failure rate but i thought 7200.12 models were ok, but who knows maybe i got unlucky.

i def dont think its virus/spyware anymore cos now ive reinstalled win7. (still haven't connected 3tb n other 2tb only have movies)
but theres still chance it could be the sata port on mobo, ive been using 4 sata ports(3 for hdds, 1 for dvdrw) n mobo bios has been updated.

im pretty sure its the hdd, cos it also seem to make bit of noise(seeking/clicking) occasionally.. :(
anyway i wont buy seagate again if it turns out to be faulty hdd.. cos last ext seagate hdd(1tb 2.5" usb3) i had was bit faulty too n it used to auto disconnect/connect all the time.

i can probably copy everything to 3tb if i erase some old movies etc n then reinstall win7 on other 2tb seagate, but thats gonna be hassle n time consuming.

As for your hard drive, install Smartmontools ( http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/Download#InstalltheWindowspackage -- make sure you install the 64-bit or 32-bit as per your OS type ( just check or un-check the "64-bit version" option in the installer ) ).

Next open up a command prompt as administrator and run ( without the quotes ) "smartctl -a sda" . Even if the health check passes, be sure to copy and paste the output into a code block in this thread.

Next, run the short self test by typing "smartctl -t short sda" . You can check on the progress of the test by typing "smartctl -c sda" ( the progress can also be checked with "smartctl -l selftest sda" ) . When the test is finished type "smartctl -l selftest sda" and paste the results as before.

Finally, run the long self test by typing "smartctl -t long sda" and repeat the steps for the short self test above.
