Help with CTDs please?

Post » Wed Jan 01, 2014 7:54 pm

Bought Skyrim on my PC finally during the Steam Flash Sale. Huge TES fan since TES III, currently have a heavily modded Morrowind game and have been wanting to do the same with Skyrim after logging so many hours on my 360. I am experiencing CTDs near Riverwood and Embershard Mine. I am completely baffled as to what to do with BOSS and TES5Edit. I have 0 warnings in BOSS and TES5Edit seems to be doing nothing, but it's so confusing that I don't even know what the information it displays means, nor what each optional action actually does in the program. Here is my load order and my dxdiag. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated!!!

EDIT: I feel it would also be relevant to say that I have read up and watched this video on TES5Edit and am still entirely 100% completely clueless on the subject.

That's a fair number of mods. You have to troubleshoot the issue really. No one is necessarily going to pinpoint it for you. Make a new manual save and DONT overwrite it.

I always recommend you disable all mods (uncheck them), disable archive invalidated, and refresh the .ini files (C:\.....\Documents\My Games\Skyrim<- backup this folder first) skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini). Delete the 2 files and let the game remake them. See if the issue goes away. If it does, then start adding things back. You might consider keeping requiem enabled. If the problem is still there try disabling it.

Try that:

Mod Cleaning

The following process should be used to clean any plugin identified by BOSS as in need of cleaning (including the official DLCs!):

  1. Launch TES5Edit directly or from within Wrye Bash or Mod Organizer.
  2. Right-click inside the file listing and click [Select None] from the context menu.
  3. Check the boxes for "Skyrim.esm", "Update.esm" and the plugin to be cleaned and click [OK]. (Wait for the message "Background Loader: finished" to appear in the right pane.)
  4. Right-click the plugin to be cleaned and select [Apply Filter For Cleaning]. Wait for the message "Filtering Done" to appear in the right pane.
  5. Again, right-click the plugin to be cleaned and select [Remove "Identical To Master" records]. There will be a two-second warning, so just click OK once it becomes available. Wait for the message "Removing 'Identical to Master' records done".
  6. A final time, right-click the plugin to be cleaned and select [Undelete and Disable References]. Wait for the message "Undeleting and Disabling References done".
  7. Close TES5Edit and accept the changes. (the original plugin is saved to the backup folder under "skyrim\Data\TES5Edit Backups".)

If done correctly, when BOSS is next run, the message to clean the mod that was just cleaned should no longer appear.

One thing to note - you're got the Unofficial High Resolution Patch.esp Active in your load order but not the high res texture files themselves. Bit surprised the game starts at all.

One thing you could try is to lower the graphics settings one notch in the launcher - ie ultra to high, or high to medium - and see if that reduces the CTDs.
