Help with Fallout

Post » Sat Aug 14, 2010 8:26 am

I just got the Fallout Trilogy pack, and I started playing Fallout 1. However, I don't really know what I'm doing. I struggled to kill some rats because it said I was out of ammo, yet I had 72 of it in my inventory. Then, I can't figure how to get AP back, so I just waste all of it and then wait for it to come back. As you can see, I really don't know what I'm doing. I really do want to enjoy this game, but I can't seem to get used to the combat and interface. If you can help, it'll be appreciate.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest reading the manual first.

Will do.

In the beginning you accuracy is horrible so get as close as possible when shooting them. To reload I think you have to go to your inventory and drag the bullets to your gun. When your out if AP you end your turn(you don't have to be out of AP to end it either). After you end your turn your enemy goes, then when it's your turn again your AP will be restored.

Yup, I read parts of the manual, and I got past all the rats really easily. I didn't realize that the combat could be so fun. By the way, can anyone tell me if my character is good for my first playthrough? http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/6408/fallout1newbcharacter.jpg

. Yea,it looks pretty good. The only things I would recomend changing is the bloody mess perk and science. The bloody mess perk is usless, you will see your enemys explode without the perk and it will feel like more if a reward. I would recomend choosing the fast shot perk. Also I never really found a good use for science in the game.

Perhaps change off of repair and go for a healing skill naming doctor. right clicking the weapon bar swaps fire modes and the reload ooption. It goes usually for guns: single, burst, reload. for hand weapons: thrust, swing, throw.

I think
Spoiler
convincing the Master to kill himself
requires high Science. I'd say that's a good use.

Repair is actually useful? Also, in the beginning it's best to use the knife with the rats. They aren't worth wasting bullets.

I tagged small guns, lockpick & speech first time through & gifted trait. Jinxed is a good trait for a second playthrough, as it is hilarious.

Repair skill is VERY useful once you hit the military base, where you can "repair" force field emitters to allow your character to pass.
There's a use for science in there as well.
Spoiler
Two specific computers on main floor where you can turn off some of the force fields and make changes to base security settings.

Don't waste your ammo on then. Use the knife you have.

You want lockpick.. or at the very least dump a ton of points in it. You get XP and tons of loot in locked containers.

You can reload by rightclicking on the weapon in the middle of the user interface. Same way you 'aim' at bodyparts, or use quickshots, you can also reload from that screen. Sometimes you can choose Burst options too.

To add to this: If you press F1, you can see the key shortcuts - A to enter the turn-based mode, B to change between the two held items, and N to change the item mode (Single Shot, Aimed Shot, Burst, Reload for weapons for example) being the ones that I use the most. and 1-8 of course for the various skills. It's much quicker and more fluent than using the mouse for everything. :)

Agreed!

I would recomend choosing the fast shot perk. Also I never really found a good use for science in the game.
But here I must disagree... You need a developed science skill for anything technical, and as for Fast Shot ~I never take it, as it removes the option to aim targets shots.

*I would suggest/ point out the Awareness Perk as very informative, though I never pick that one myself.

**I would also suggest using the mouse to inspect EVERYTHING in sight, and not to ignore the Text panel on the lower left.

***Empathy is another strange, but informative perk to at least consider... It color codes the response choices you have with NPC's

****Gambling too is something to consider (though its of limited use late in the game). I once had a level 1 PC that went into a Casino with 5 caps (and tagged Gambling), and he left with 1500. B)

Lastly, I'd recommend advancing all skills that can be advanced with books, all the way up to the Book max (91% IIRC), before seriously investing skill points into them (unless you just have to for a given situation).

I remember the days where there was yet no internets & online game faqs and when one became stuck in a game, one basically had to keep the game lying around until one -by chance- would meet another person who happened to have finished the game...

Good times.

There were sometimes walkthroughs in gaming magazines back then.

How do you get your stats to come up like that? Mine fill the entire screen.

Hmm, if I remember correctly, you don't need a high Repair skill for that at all. It's just trial and error, keep on trying to repair it and eventually the forcefield will go down anyway.

Alright guys, thanks for the replies. I only took the Bloody Mess perk because I was fooling around with my character. I'll change it to something else.

You also installed the hi-res patch at some point,
(Vanilla Fallout is strictly 640x480 resolution ~The screenshot is 1360x768).

Does the Luck stat influence the chance of enemies having critical failures? I'm considering doing a playthrough with a character with very high Luck and Jinxed trait... maybe I'll call the PC Forrest Gump.

I don't think your Luck value will affect the critical failures of others... However, I can very much recommend getting Jinxed for some hilarious gameplay. Even the most common of random enemy encounters are suddenly epic battles of massive fail with guns exploding to peoples' hands and what not. :D

I always liked making a Melee character with the Jinxed trait myself, they complement each other quite well (Jinxed can be a good "defense" in a way).

As I understand it... The Luck stat affects every virtual die roll in the game (for good or bad); You can see it's effect on the PC's Critical chance to hit, and I'd expect all attepts to hit the PC are subject to the PC's Luck. The Jinxed trait does affect enemies and the PC alike (causing them gun-jams and miserable luck ~I think its effect is minus (5?) Luck to everyone around your PC ~based on the notion that taking Jinxed and having 10 for Luck, results in the PC having average luck, while all others suffer the jinx).
It would seem that the Pariah dog has the Jinxed trait.

Perhaps Ausir knows for certain, the inside mechanics of the Stat?
