Help with getting Oblivion to work with mods

Post » Sat Jan 18, 2014 6:15 am

So I've been modding Morrowind for years with no issues. I recently purchased a gaming laptop so I could play PC games and as such my copy of ES IV 5th year finally works.

Vanilla the game works flawlessly with expansions and all. However I tried putting the unofficial patches from Planet Elder Scrolls on (Main game, Shivering, and Official mods) and it mutilated the game. It no longer boots up. I asked a buddy and he recommended BOSS so I installed that ran it, and still nothing. I'm absolutely stumped.

One other thing to note is I've tried un installing and re installing a few times to get around this but nothing changes and the mods stay the same so it's not like I can start from scratch.

Any help with all this is appreciated. Cheers.

Are you using Wrye Bash? Can you post your load order?

I didn't want to use WB because when I used the version for Morrowind a few years back it did a ton of damage to my computer. I don't really know how to use it either.

Wrye Bash is the best for both Oblivion and Morrowind, but it does have a bit of a learning curve. It is well worth the effort of learning.

In any event, if you want help with your problem, we will need to take a look at your load order. Do you have a way to post it? Typically people post such things in spoiler tags.

By load order I assume you mean the order the mods in the data files list?

Load order is the order in which the game loads the esm/esp files. I use Wrye Bash to manage my load order, I cannot really advise you how to do it manually since I have only ever managed load order with Wrye Bash.

However, if this is your load order, then it clearly has some problems. Oblivion.esm needs to be the first file to load, followed by the Unofficial Oblivion Patch, etc., then Shivering Isles esp, followed by the Shivering Isles patch, then the other DLC, followed by their patches. BOSS will set the exact order.

Your load order starts with the DLC and has Oblivion.esm close to the bottom. If this is really the order your game is loading then that is why it is crashing. You need to figure out a way to use BOSS to set your load order correctly. With Wrye Bash, you run BOSS and it automatically updates your load order, which you can then review in the Wrye Bash mods tab.

Hopefully someone can give you some advice on how to do this manually with just BOSS but no mod management program. If all you are doing is running the DLC adn patches there should be a way to do that without a mod management program. However if you plan on adding further mods, I'd really suggest learning Wrye Bash.

If you're going to use mods for Oblivion, http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/22368/? is going to be essential.

The other essential tools/utilities:

http://obse.silverlock.org/ - needed for a lot of mods to function correctly.

http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/11536/? - cleaning utility for mods. Will help prevent crashing. Here's a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y94K6bnxc8w. Here's http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Mod_Cleaning_Tutorial (basic principles apply to Oblivion even though it's a page for Skyrim).

http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/35230/?tab=3&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Foblivion%2Fajax%2Fmodimages%2F%3Fid%3D35230%26user%3D1&pUp=1 is going to be very helpful with using Wrye Bash. The guide is in the IMAGES tab of the page.

By the way, your load order should be like this:
