Help me with GNR more-where-that-came-from

Post » Sun Feb 06, 2011 5:23 pm

Okay, I wanted to explore mods a bit and thought I'd start "easy" since I've never used mods ever. Figured expanding the radio station would be pretty simple in the grand scheme of things. I feel like I'm out of my element. I'm not an idiot, but I just can't seem to understand what to do. I have windows xp sp3, fallout3 with the most recent patch (can't remember # 1.7+...) I've downloaded and installed FOSE, FOMM and archiveinvalidation invalidated.

I'm reading the readme file of the MWtCF mod and trying to follow it's instructions, but am totally baffled. It says to place the sound folder and the selected ESP file into fallout3/data folder...okay, no problem, understand that totally.

Next it wants me to extract files from sound.bsa or download galaxynewsradio[wavepack] - okay lost

Place audio files in folder fallout3/data/sound/songs/radio/gnr, but it seems like each rar file I extract contains another 'sound' folder too, which contains all those other folders (sound/songs/radio/gnr) so the folder list just keeps getting ridiculous.

So, I plod on hoping something in the readme will clarify things and I get to the 'Extracting Your Files' section...sounds promising (probably more useful to someone other than me!)

this is quote from the readme:

Extracting Your Files
---------------------
GalaxyNewsRadio needs 4 files in order to function properly. There are 2
methods available to accomplish this. Extract the files from your Sound.BSA, or
download GalaxyNewsRadio[WAVPack] from Fallout3Nexus.

In order to extract the files yourself:
1) Get a BSA unpacker. (I recommend FOMM.*)
2) Unpack the file ...\Fallout 3\Data\Sound.BSA
3) Extract the file ...\Sound\Songs\Radio\Licensed\mus_generic_rhythm_mono.wav
4) Rename the file as mus_generic_rhythmforyou_mono.wav
5) Extract the file ...\Sound\Songs\Radio\Licensed\mus_generic_rhythm_mono.mp3
6) Rename the file as mus_generic_rhythmforyou_mono.mp3
7) Extract the file ...\Sound\Songs\Radio\Licensed\mus_generic_swing_mono.wav
8) Rename the file as mus_generic_swingdoors_mono.wav
9) Extract the file ...\Sound\Songs\Radio\Licensed\mus_generic_swing_mono.mp3
10)Rename the file as mus_generic_swingdoors_mono.mp3
11)Place renamed files in folder ...\Fallout 3\Data\Sound\Songs\Radio\Licensed

I do not know how to use FOMM to extract the files, I tried fiddling with it, but to no avail. Also, is renaming the files as simple as right clicking and renaming?

Next section in the readme is titled, 'Preparing your audio files'

Preparing your audio files
--------------------------
GalaxyNewsRadio requires a certain number of audio tracks to function properly.
Please select the correct version to accomodate the number of MP3s you wish to
play.

Prepare your audio files as described below. "x" denote optional steps.
1) Collect your MP3 tracks to be used.
2) Set MP3 quality to CBR, 192kbps, stereo, 44kHz.*
3x) Set volume normalization. 93.5db will match GNR's original songs.**
4) Place stereo MP3s in folder ...\Data\Sound\Songs\Radio\GNR
5) Run "MP3 TrackX Namer.BAT". This will rename your MP3s in the correct format
for GNR. This will also create 2 files with the folder. TrackXUndo.BAT will
return your MP3s to original titles. SongList.TXT is for your reference.
6) Create mono MP3 files of your renamed tracks. CBR, 96kbps, mono, 44kHz.*
7) Create WAV files of your renamed tracks. 356kbps, 16bit, 22kHz, mono.*
8) Place "Mono Extension Adder.bat" in same folder as mono MP3 and WAV folder.
Make sure this folder does not include your stereo MP3 files.
9) Run "Mono Extension Adder.bat". If you need to undo this step, please run
"Mono Extension Remover.bat".
10) Place mono MP3 and mono WAV files in folder ...\Data\Sound\Songs\Radio\GNR
11x)Check to make sure you have 3 files for each track you wish to play.
For example: Track01.mp3 | Track01_mono.mp3 | Track01_mono.wav

*Switch Sound File Converter can accomplish this. See Helpful Files section.
**MP3Gain can accomplish this. See Helpful Files section.

I don't know how to set my mp3 quality to CBR, 192kbps, sterio, 44kHz or to set the volume normalization...

Basically I need someone to hold my hand through this process it seems. Anyone out there willing to give me a hand? If so, either respond in thread or PM me and I'll give you my email, I would be extremely appreciative for any help!!!

first make sure you have all tracks you need, downloaded. next, open up FOMM and click on package manager, then click the tab add new. navigate to where you have saved your download, once you find it then open it(give it time, FOMM may appear to freeze, sometimes it takes time)after that you should be able to see the file in package manager. click to activate it. rinse and repeat as necessary. Also, make sure you are using only one of the ESP's if only using 20 tracks, then use only the ESP for 20.

You're trying to use http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2972, aren't you? That's a mod where the user has to provide their own music.

OldManMose76 did this and produced http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1418. Unless you really, really want to start converting your own music into .WAVs and .MP3s, I would highly recommend using that. It's a far simpler install and the music is already made. You just need to download what you want and extract.

That is correct, although I would add that just to be certain that the directory structure remains correct (there are a TON of files in several song packs), I would extract them to another folder, check that the structure is correct, and then cut/paste them into the proper spot in your Fallout 3/Data folder. Yes, it adds another step in the process, but I'm just anol that way. If you still have trouble, reply again and I'm sure myself or others can help. This was one of my 1st mods too, and I can't live without it in the game now. You won't regret it, I assure you!

Hey, I'm trying to do the same installation. When I go to where my tracks are saved (Data/Sound/Songs/Radio/GNR) I don't see a thing. Is this related to it loading or because it can't read the files?

If you installed the mod correctly should be able to see a bunch of .mp3's and .wav's. If they're not there you probably extracted them to the wrong location.

I have all the MP3s and WAVs. I could play them in iTunes perfectly. But I can't hear them in-game.

If you download and use FOMM (Fallout Mod Manager), it really makes it very easy. Just download it and install it, then follow barretsfloyd's directions...

Get FOMM here... http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=640

FOMM was the first mod I downloaded. Obvious information is obvious. The thing is that I can't find any files under Data/Sound/Songs/Radio/GNR when I open Package Manager's add new tab.

I'm not trying to be rude...I have no idea about anything. I'm a mod novice still. I told FOMM to unpack the RAR files. I have a feeling you're trying to direct FOMM to_all_the files. Let FOMM unpack the RAR files itself and the corresponding .esp file for however many songs you're using.

PM me if I'm wrong and perhaps we can work this through with an IM communication.

Me neither, my apologies. It's just everyone's been giving me obvious info like bInvalidateOlderFiles stuff. I really do appreciate all your help :) I'm still wrapping my head around all this.

The thing is that it is almost impossible to know which knowledge level a forum user has unless stated, before you get to know them anyway. What's obvious for one is complete news for another.

I'm not sure if I follow you here. The files will be added to that folder after installing the mod via the Package Manager. When using "add new" you should navigate to the compressed file you want to make a FOMOD of. "Add new" will only recognize compressed archives. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding what you're describing. More detailed info might help.

Anyway, here's how I did:

1. Downloaded "More Where That Came From ESP and Ad Tracks" and all the Track Packs (in my case).
2. Created a folder named GNR combined and uncompressed everything from the above downloads into it (making sure the track packs ended up appropriately in the sound etc. folders). Added GalaxyNewsRadio100[M].esp (in my case).
3. Create from folder > navigated to the above one. This took a while as it is +1GB.
4. When finished, highlighted it and activated it. Also took quite a while.
5. That was it.

You should probably read my post above. The instructions for installing this mod are there, and as stated by OP, it does work. Perhaps if you had read the whole thread and followed the instructions properly you would have known that.

I'm going to throw a monkey wrench in this.

I was almost at the point of starting a new thread.

After asking in Mod detectives about the difference in various other 'create your own radio station' mods and getting no reply I then began to explore the VTAP option as it appeared to give the option of upwards of 250 song capability with the lowest being 25.

I then spent the better part of a day learning how to operate the various audio applications such as http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Main_Page (all you really need and well put together) creating mono mp3 tracks at the right bit rate and such. I created the radio station then played it and immediately got stutter.

I then tried other radio stations and again stutter. I was already using the pre-made GNR expanded mod, Existence, Mutant, and Ghost radio. I then recalled other times this happened and realized this was a serious bug. Perhaps it is because the amount of stations one adds or it is the size of the mp3 files. I then read that F3 has difficulties with mp3 files.

I did a bit more research and found two options - one was the use of a http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9606 and the other one was a http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7876.

Has anyone tried the mad filter version? After reading up on the second option I'm finding that many of the commentators are stating that they tried the MAD filter and ultimately it did not work. So I'm going to try that. It requires making all songs into wav files from mp3 files and therefore extracting them from the bsa.

This step was not done by the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1418 of GNR. Then I looked at some of the Radio stations and some had Wav and some had mp3s and some did not even have mono versions (which are necessary for http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4709

So now I face the daunting task of changing about 7 radio stations tracks to wav including several that were prepackaged and appeared ready to use.

Anyway - be curious if anyone has anything to add to that or advice.

I've thoroughly read your instructions, it's not your fault it isn't wroking for me, it's mine. I need to just find this RAR file.

EDIT: Think I've got it. If I have a problem again, I'll let you guys know.

EDIT: I have GNR in FOMOD, but I still have static!

Keep in mind, if you havn't completed the quest for GNR yet, then you will only hear static outside of the DC area.
