Help with graphics cards

Post » Wed Oct 27, 2010 9:15 am

Hi all, I'm going to be upgrading my graphics card in the next week or two and I need some help choosing what card to get. I was browsing newegg yesterday and my eyes fell on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130587&cm_re=gtx_580-_-14-130-587-_-Product. So then I started looking around some more and found http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130628&cm_re=crysis_2-_-14-130-628-_-Product.

My question is, which is better? I'll post my dxdiag in just a bit to be sure that they will work well on my system, but between those, which is best? Also if there are any others which would be better please let me know. Just a heads up though I would like to stick with nVidia.

Thanks! ^_^

The 580 is vastly superior, but it may not be necessary (or advisable) depending on a few factors in particular: the resolution you game at, and the quality/wattage of your PC's power supply.

I game at 1920x1080, and my PSU is rated for 1000w.

Yeah those newer big Nvidia cards draw a lot of power too. I'd double check and make sure you have enough wattage in your PSU before getting too hasty and sticking something like that in your case.

Still. It seems a bit much. I'm fairly certain you can play any game on the market right now on max settings with a much cheaper video card.

Call me crazy, but I'd like to try to delay future upgrades as much as possible, as I did with my current 8800.

Also, if you plan to run Adobe CS5 apps on this machine, they can take advantage of the 580's CUDA Mercury hardware processing for things like real time renders, etc. Not sure about the 560

Then I'd go for the 580 for sure. :) That should give you more than sufficient FPS at 1920x1080 for years to come.

That beauty is a beast! Definitely the king of the graphics card hill, at least for the time being. :D

Although, if you want to shave about a third off the price, and don't mind dropping 10%-15% performance or so, the 570 is even better value for money.

But if you want the very best of this line, there's also the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130590&Tpk=580%20superclocked (factory overclocked to 797 MHz.) ;)

Hmm, for that money you could run two 580s in SLI. I'd like to see those numbers... :P

I agree with Steampunk, don't throw money away at top of the line cards unless anything but high is absolutely unacceptable. By the time you'll upgrading a mid-high card you are buying today the replacement will be cheaper and better than buying a 580 today. Buy a mid or mid-high card and then upgrade when you want to again. Not upgrading again does not necessarily equal saving money if you are just throwing money at a top of the line card now.

I'll probably go with the 580, I'll post my dxdiag in the next 30mins and such.

Hmm, good point, the superclocked version is better. :P

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130630

I'll probably go with the 580, I'll post my dxdiag in the next 30mins and such.

Ah, I stand corrected (again) - didn't know the 590 was out already. And it goes to show how fast the industry moves; my info was only 3 months old! :P

http://www.thesasclan.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=152273 :whistling:

I personally went with the 570 SC when I faced this decision a few months ago. Currently there's only one game (to my knowledge) which actually puts any major strain on it: Metro 2033. I'm thinking if Skyrim and Deus Ex need more grunt I can always drop another 570 in there. So... don't feel like you need to overkill your rig just because this or that card may be "better" on paper. ;)

Here's a good benchmarking resource: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

If you take a look, the 580 is at the top, whereas the 560 is about 10 down.

If you have an sli capable motherboard, then it might be more cost effective to go with two of a lesser card.
The down side of this is that if you went with the 580 you could always add another 580 in the future if needed.

If you have SLI capability then I'd consider going with two of these: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6976278&CatId=3669

The 460's a great card, and the performance is great for the price.
Here's a comparison of a 580 vs 2 460s:
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/12/02/geforce_gtx_580_vs_460_1gb_sli/

The 460s were only 2 fps behind in most cases, but for half the price.
