Help with Gregor at Heljarchen Hall

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 3:50 pm

Built Heljarchen, became Thane of the Pale, Gregor is housecarl. Outside, after he arrived, he offered to be Steward and my PC accepted. However.... he still has only the normal housecarl convo options. He's never offered to provide anything else - in other words, no steward convo options. He never goes into the house (and I remember that with Rayya and Valdimar, they entered the house and I got the offer to be steward a second time from each). Anyone have any idea how to "nudge" him to proper behavior?

The house is done, I just want him to buy the livestock....

This sounds rather buggy to me. Off the top of my head though... Does he have a place to sleep? Have you tried leaving until the cell resets? Is he just standing in one spot? Sometimes pushing them around a bit seems to jar their memory. I remember one time Lydia got stuck like that and I had to literally push her to the front door before she'd follow me inside. Everything went back to normal after that. Now that I think of it, that happened after she offered to be my steward but I told her no. I guess I made her sad. Poor girl.

Well, obviously posting here about it fixed it! Seriously - I just went back there, and saw Gregor enter the house. Followed him in, and talked to him, lo and behold! He has the appropriate steward convo options now.

This was the second time I went back after a cell reset. Just took him a lot longer, I guess....

If it happens again, try killing him, and hiring someone else. Usually fixes the problem.

The same thing happened to my Gregor after offering to become steward he had no steward conversation lines but I fixed it by "dismissing" him from being my follower and that initiated the steward status.

That's another one I'll keep in mind - I should copy all this out to file....

IIRC, the process of making a housecarl steward is supposed to dismiss them as a follower, so they're definitely linked. I know that you don't get both the follower and steward dialog at the same time, as I've often wanted to give my steward other equipment, and the only way to do that is "follow me" "trade some things" "dismiss". If you've got the option to trade/dismiss, the NPC is in follower mode.

I'm always reluctant to make a housecarl the steward of their own home, as they'll already go there when they're not following. The steward position is useful for other followers, as it changes their home location to one that's convenient for the player, especially if you want to swap them for a housecarl with different stats.

That does make sense, ghastley. Now, in a new playthrough, I'm not going to do the HF houses at all, I'm going to use the new buildable Riverside Lodge - which doesn't include animals, so no use for a steward (and really that's fine - having another body in a house ALWAYS drives me bats!)

Thanks for the info, though - I'm sure it will come in handy eventually!
